Optimization Of Plasmas For Recombination-Pumped Short-Wavelength Lasers, Michael James Murphy , '98, Catharine Glasheen , '97, Frank Moscatelli, T. D. Donnelly

Physics & Astronomy Faculty Works

We report on experiments investigating the optimization of laser-ablated plasmas which are used to produce recombination-pumped, short-wavelength lasers. We evaluate the density of electrons and neutral atoms in laser ablated lithium and carbon plasmas as a function of time and distance away from the ablated target surface. We use an interferometric technique which can reveal information about the temperature of the plasma electrons. We find that the cold electrons which result in gain in recombination-pumped lithium lasers on the Lyman-cr transition are produced by the high-intensity pump pulse rather than the lower intensity ablating pulse.

Wind Climatology At 87 Km Above The Rocky Mountains At Bear Lake Observatory--Fabry-Perot Observations Of Oh, V. B. Wickwar, I K. Monson, C M. Vadnais, D Rees

Reports

This paper presents the neutral -wind climatology at approximately 87-km 53 altitude from Utah State University's Bear Lake Observatory (BLO). a mid-latitude site 54 situated in the middle of the Rocky Mountains. The winds were determined using a very 55 sensitive Fabry-Perot interferometer (FPI) observing the OH Me inel (6-2) PI (3) line al 56 843 nm. The climatology. determined from monthly averages of the nightly evolution of 57 the geographic meridional and zonal wind components over forty· five months, has three 58 distinct seasonal patterns: winter (November- February), summer (May-Jul y), and late 59 Slimmer (August and September). Information Transmission In Joint Decision Making, Subhashish Gupta Apr 1997

Information Transmission In Joint Decision Making, Subhashish Gupta

Working Papers

This paper investigates the possible equilibria in a game of information transmission with incomplete information. Two individuals are required to reach a decision between two alternativ es and a decision is reached only if they can agree on it. Individuals receive private signals and can send messages to each other sequentially. However, they can only send binary messages and the sending of messages is time consuming. We investigate the possible equilibria when the individuals agree on the desired outcomes and when they do not. We show that when the players have the same preferences over outcomes there is a limited …

The Structure, Conduct And Performance Of Publicly Traded Commodity Funds: A Review, Darrin L Witt, R S Â Rathinasamy

Working Papers

In this paper, a comprehensive review of more than a decade of research on the commodity funds is being provided. There is overwhelming evidence indicating that commodity funds are low return, high risk investments. Research also has shown that they are poor hedges against inflation. Results also indicate that commodity fUnds exhibit skewness thereby offering investors potential opportunity for large gains. Research also seems to suggest that they are not valuable additions to stock or bond portfolios of investors in terms of enlarging the efficient frontier. With respect to using past data to predict future performance, there is evidence that …

What Is The Standard For State Standards? An Investigation Of The State English Language Arts Standards Of Colorado, Florida, Michigan, And New Hampshire, Heidi Ann Mesmer Apr 1997

What Is The Standard For State Standards? An Investigation Of The State English Language Arts Standards Of Colorado, Florida, Michigan, And New Hampshire, Heidi Ann Mesmer

Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts

It is no wonder that the NCTE Elementary Section Steering Committee, comprising some of the most imaginative and introspective minds in the English language arts field, would eloquently encapsulate a pivotal issue in the nationwide standards dialogue. Within the group's four page position statement is tucked this truth, "Standards represent what we value (NCTE Elementary Section Steering Committee, 1996, p. 2)." This brief declaration speaks to the enormous emotional investment which standards discussions involve and exemplifies the responsibility of creating standards.

An Optimization Technique Of Airlines' Seat Inventory Management, Husam Abdallah Mahmoud Fanasheh Apr 1997

An Optimization Technique Of Airlines' Seat Inventory Management, Husam Abdallah Mahmoud Fanasheh

Master's Theses - Daytona Beach

This study consisted of a simulation to maximize an airline's Origin- Destination revenues. It has been hypothesized that Linear Programming is capable of maximizing airlines' networks revenues. Simulation was performed with Linear Interactive Discrete Optimizer (LINDO). This project was designed to consider different fares and its classes along with multi flight connections. The seats' allocation process came out with the maximum possible revenues, and enough flexibility in terms of changing such allocation to work around competition and trends. Results came supportive to the hypothesis. Sensitivity analysis provided our model with a tool to modify and change different variables, like fares, …
