Rounding Numbers: Why The "New System" Doesn't Work, W. Robert Midden Apr 1997

Rounding Numbers: Why The "New System" Doesn't Work, W. Robert Midden

Chemistry Faculty Publications

This paper explains a correction to the rounding rule previously publishedin this Journal. The earlier article reported that the best way to roundnumbers is to always round up when the first digit dropped is 5. However, this will lead to accumulation of error when errors are averaged. Arounding strategy that leads to less error is to round up when 5 isfollowed by any nonzero digits, but to round even when 5 is followed byzeros or no other digits. By rounding the last kept digit to an evennumber, half the time the digit is increased and half the time it is keptthe …

Enhanced Coupling To Microsphere Resonances With Optical Fibers, A. Serpengüzel, S. Arnold, G. Griffel, James A. Lock Apr 1997

Enhanced Coupling To Microsphere Resonances With Optical Fibers, A. Serpengüzel, S. Arnold, G. Griffel, James A. Lock

Physics Faculty Publications

Morphology-dependent resonances (MDR's) of polystyrene microspheres were excited by an optical fiber coupler. For optical elimination of the air-cladding interface at the optical fiber coupler surface, the microsphere was immersed in an index-matching oil. MDR's were observed, even though the relative refractive index between the microsphere and the oil was only 1.09. The observed MDR spectra are in good agreement with the generalized Lorenz-Mie theory and the localization principle. The scattering efficiency into each MDR is estimated as a function of the impact parameter by means of generalized Lorenz-Mie theory. (C) 1997 Optical Society of America.

Development And Initial Evaluation Of An Acoustic Apparatus Used For Testing Of Farfield Noise Emitted By A Propeller In A Short Duct, R. Duane Oleson Apr 1997

Development And Initial Evaluation Of An Acoustic Apparatus Used For Testing Of Farfield Noise Emitted By A Propeller In A Short Duct, R. Duane Oleson

Master's Theses - Daytona Beach

The purpose of this thesis was to design, construct and evaluate an apparatus which was used for testing of acoustic emissions by a propeller in a short duct. An apparatus was designed based on a combination of acoustic principles and a desire to be able apply the knowledge gained to a practical application such as an ultralight aircraft in an effort to reduce the overall noise levels emitted. The apparatus consisted of a 35 horsepower ultralight engine, a four bladed ultralight propeller, and a duct constructed of a foam core covered with fiberglass. Initial evaluations compared noise levels from the …

Isotope Ratio Studies Of Marine Mammals In Prince William Sound, Donald M. Schell, Amy Hirons

Marine & Environmental Sciences Faculty Reports

This project consists of two components: (1) provision of analytical services for the stable isotope ratio investigations associated with Exxon Valdez oil spill projects, and (2) an investigation of food web relationships and trophic interactions of harbor seals and other top consumers of Prince William Sound (PWS). Through the use of harbor seal tissues collected from native harvested animals and tagging programs, seasonal and migrational information has been obtained with regard to prey utilization and trophic status at differing locations within the sound and the adjacent Gulf of Alaska. Preliminary results indicate that within PWS, harbor seals fall at the …

Fragment Rotational Distributions From The Dissociation Of Nebr2: Experimental And Classical Trajectory Studies, Mehdi Nejad-Sattari , '95, Thomas Alex Stephenson

Chemistry & Biochemistry Faculty Works

The Br-2 fragment rotational distributions that result from the vibrational predissociation of NeBr2 in the B electronic state have been measured for several initial vibrational levels. In each case, the rotational distributions extend to the effective energetic Limit determined by the amount of energy available (E(av1)) for disposal into the fragment rotational and translational degrees of freedom. Analysis of the data allows refinement of the NeBr2 dissociation energy; we find that D-0=70.0 +/- 1.1 cm(-1) for the X electronic state, v = 0. Both Delta v = - 1 and -2 dissociation events have been examined. For dissociation pathways with …

Characterizing A Portable Subset Of Behavioral Vhdl-93, Krishnaprasad Thirunarayan, Robert Ewing Apr 1997

Characterizing A Portable Subset Of Behavioral Vhdl-93, Krishnaprasad Thirunarayan, Robert Ewing

Kno.e.sis Publications

Goossens defined a structural operational semantics for a subset of VHDL-87 and proved that the parallelism present in VHDL is benign. We extend this work to include VHDL-93 features such as shared variables and postponed processes that change the underlying semantic model. In the presence of shared variables, nondeterministic execution of VHDL-93 processes destroys the unique meaning property. We identify and characterize a class of portable VHDL-93 descriptions for which unique meaning property can be salvaged. Our specification can serve as a correctness criteria for a VHDL-93 simulator.

A Fast Scan Submillimeter Spectroscopic Technique, Douglas T. Petkie, Thomas M. Goyette, Ryan P. A. Bettens, Sergei P. Belov, Sieghard Albert, Paul Helminger, Frank C. De Lucia

Physics Faculty Publications

A new fast scan submillimeter spectroscopic technique (FASSST) has been developed which uses a voltage tunable backward wave oscillator (BWO) as a primary source of radiation, but which uses fast scan (~105 Doppler limited resolution elements/s) and optical calibration methods rather than the more traditional phase or frequency lock techniques. Among its attributes are (1) absolute frequency calibration to ~1/10 of a Doppler limited gaseous absorption linewidth (<0.1 MHz, 0.000 003 cm-1), (2) high sensitivity, and (3) the ability to measure many thousands of lines/s. Key elements which make this system possible include the excellent short term spectral purity of the …

Charter Schools, Common Schools, And The Washington State Constitution, L.K. Beale Apr 1997

Charter Schools, Common Schools, And The Washington State Constitution, L.K. Beale

Washington Law Review

Early American political thinkers deemed universal education essential to the proper functioning of a republican form of government. Accordingly, each state developed a public school system supported by general taxation. The Washington Constitution requires the system to be both "general" and "uniform." Common schools, for which certain school funds are constitutionally reserved, are the most important and only mandatory component of the system. Recent charter school proposals raise questions as to whether such institutions fit within a general and uniform system and whether they are "common schools" entitled to common school funds. In order to provide a framework for such …

Determinants Of Worker Perceptions Of Team Effectiveness, Scott D. Mist Apr 1997

Determinants Of Worker Perceptions Of Team Effectiveness, Scott D. Mist

Masters Theses

This study measures perceptions of team effectiveness in a research and development organization from data obtained during an evaluation of a Federal Re-Invention Laboratory. The study is a secondary analysis which examines five scales, selected for their ability to measure team performance and satisfaction through the use of several values, behaviors and attitudes. These include empowerment, cohesion, team fitness, culture-power distribution, and culture.

A confirmatory factor analysis was used to analyze the strength of the question items of the scales. The factors were then utilized in four logistic regression analyses of dependent variables.

The analyses showed the relative strength of …

Analysis Of Organic Nitrates In Artic Outflow, Deanna Elyea-Piper Apr 1997

Analysis Of Organic Nitrates In Artic Outflow, Deanna Elyea-Piper

Masters Theses

The Arctic Outflow Study (AOS) was a project funded by the National Science Foundation to assess the impact of tropospheric ozone concentrations by the measurement of oxidized nitrogen. Measurements of arctic outflow were made to assess the seasonal cycle of compounds in arctic air and the partitioning of NOy during transport to the North Atlantic region. These photochemically active compounds are elevated in the arctic during the winter and spring because of the lack of photochemical processes to destroy them.

Measurements of PAN, Alkyl nitrates, NOy, NO, NO2, CO, HNO3, O3, and particulate nitrate …

Well Screen Characteristics Which Constrain Hydraulic Conductivity Calculated From Slug Tests, Christopher G. Amore Apr 1997

Well Screen Characteristics Which Constrain Hydraulic Conductivity Calculated From Slug Tests, Christopher G. Amore

Masters Theses

With the growing concern over ground water protection and waste water management, interest in the use of slug tests to characterize hydraulic properties of aquifers has increased. While slug tests offer an inexpensive alternative to pump tests, problems arise with collection of the tests and the interpretation of the results. Field tests and mathematical studies show that both positive and negative biases of formation properties have been obtained. The resulting errors can be traced to improper analytical techniques, incorrect assumptions of well configuration and aquifer properties, poor well installation and data gathering. Most of these problems can be corrected by …

Remote Sensing Of Freshwater Coastal Wetland Changes In Tuscola County, Michigan: An Evaluation Of Noaa’S C-Cap Program, Theodore S. Krumbach

Masters Theses

Coastal wetland protection and monitoring in the United States is becoming an increasingly important issue. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's Coastal Change Analysis Program (C-CAP) has been developed to provide a protocol for satellite monitoring of the coastal regions of the United States. This research evaluated the effectiveness of the C-CAP program when being applied to a freshwater Great Lakes ecosystem in the Saginaw Bay region by investigating four components of the protocol: (1) suitable classification methodology, (2) suitable change detection logic, (3) accuracy assessment, and (4) source of digital data. Using two dates of satellite imagery, it was …

Cooperative Power-Limited Optimal Rendezvous Between Many Spacecraft, Virginie Guerre Apr 1997

Cooperative Power-Limited Optimal Rendezvous Between Many Spacecraft, Virginie Guerre

Master's Theses - Daytona Beach

The minimum fuel rendezvous problem between several power-limited low-thrust spacecraft neighboring either a circular or an elliptic orbit is investigated. Both cooperative and non cooperative maneuvers are studied. The maximum principle of Pontryagin is applied to the optimal control rendezvous problem of several spacecraft. The gravitational field models investigated are the Clohessy-Wiltshire field and the inverse-square gravity field. Numerical solutions using a shooting method and the finite difference method are used in order to determine the trajectories of the spacecraft. Unlike previous investigations, this work is not restricted to a rendezvous of two spacecraft around a circular orbit, but a …
