Evaluation And Application Of Space Telescope Aberration Sensing Using Phase Diversity, David J. Lee
Evaluation And Application Of Space Telescope Aberration Sensing Using Phase Diversity, David J. Lee
Theses and Dissertations
Due to mechanical aspects of fabrication, launch, and operational environment, space telescope optics can suffer from unforeseen aberrations, detracting from their intended diffraction-limited performance goals. This dissertation gives the results of simulation and theoretical studies designed to explore how wavefront aberration information for such "nearly diffraction-limited" telescopes can be estimated via the Gonsalves (least-squares) phase diversity technique. In traditional phase diversity, aberrations are estimated from two images—one conventional, focused image and one image that has been defocused by a known amount. These studies are original and significant in that this effort represents the first time the effects of photon noise …

Neutron-Irradiation Effects On The V-I Characteristics Of Yba2cu3o7-Δ Twinned Crystals:Linking Transport Results In A Variety Of Copper Oxide Superconductors, Brandon R. Brown
Physics and Astronomy
We have investigated the depinning process of magnetic flux vortices in twinned crystals of YBa2Cu3O7-δ in intermediate applied magnetic fields parallel to the crystallographic c axis through precise resistivity measurements before and after fast-neutron irradiation. Of particular interest for each field is the power-law dependence of the electric field on current density, E∝Jn, at a well defined temperature which separates a nonlinear region below from a more linear, dissipative region above. We find that n shows a striking dependence on the estimated value of the Larkin-Ovchinnikov length. The relation is not only manifest …

New spectroscopic observations have resulted in significant revisions to several of the orginally published properties of the X-ray bright, chromospherically active star 1E 1751+7046: the spectral classification has been revised from K5 IV to K0 III, v sin i from 30-40 km s-1 to 23 km s-1, and the reported nondetection of the Li I 6707 Å line to a significant log epsilon(Li) = 1.8. Chromospheric and transition region surface fluxes from IUE observations and the coronal surface flux from earlier Einstein data are close to saturation levels, and comparable only to very active binaries, pre-main-sequence stars, and FK Comae …

Heidegger, Correspondence Truth And The Realist Theology Of Thomas Forsyth Torrance, John D. Morrison
Heidegger, Correspondence Truth And The Realist Theology Of Thomas Forsyth Torrance, John D. Morrison
Liberty Baptist Theological Seminary (1973-2015)
Within the context of Torrance's larger concern to critique the re-trenchment of philosophical (epistemological) dualism in theology (and culture), there lies his desire to re-establish a proper understanding of correspondence truth. Yet, contrary to the sweep of interpretation of M. Heidegger's thinking, Torrance takes the Heideggerian view of truth as disclosure, the disclosure of Being (a-letheia) to be the heart of a proper reckoning of correspondence truth and as essential to his own critical realist theology. Specifically, truth as dis-closure, properly understood, not only brings healing to the epistemological split resulting from disjunction, dualist perspectives, but is the basis of …

JOHN WgW Volume 7, Number 2 NEW MUIR Spring 1997 X I 4 J^,AN EPISODE IN THE YOSEMITE: by Frank E. Buske copyright @ 1989,1991, by Frank E. Buske (Editor's note: Dr. Frank Buske, emeritus professor and former Chair of the English Department at the University of Alaska, Fairbanks, now lives in Tucson, Arizona. This paper was presented at the 1990 John Muir Conference at UOP, and is published here, along with letters from a private collection, with the author's permission.) ('•< Muir spent the winter of 1873-75 at the McChesney home in land, having come down from his beloved mountains to spend time putting into words some of the observations he had made • ■ nig the trees and the glaciers and on the ■ - les. Mrs. Jeanne Carr and others of his I «ls had, for a long time, been * •imaging him to do more writing; they HHgested that there was a market for his j I les and a need for him to set down his ilf|overies while they were still fresh in his mind. Mrs. McChesney, in a later reminiscence, described Muir as "dressed gi»iei ally in what we call now negligee, i.e., he wore a blue flannel shirt, but was never : without a sprig of some green plant as an-S*0 jjpment." Muir's apparel would be appropriate for ij§krnd of life he most enjoyed. He disliked lifting to dress for any formal occasion and hied to avoid any social gathering that would HHuire clothing and behavior that were not comfortable to him. Although he had uently written of his loneliness, sped1 w.f t enviously about his relatives and ids who had married and were raising families, he seems to made no effort to alter his own bachelor status during that Winter in the Bay Area. Mrs. J "• ' Carr The subject of John Muir and his relationship with women is interesting to ponder, and is a topic that has received a good deal of attention and even more misinformed speculation. Some verses that he wrote before this time, highly critical of young women, their appearance and the way they dressed, prompted his friend, Bradley Brown, to write the eighteen-year old Muir, "Excuse me, John, but perhaps unreciprocated love was the cause of your rhyming against the sweet little creatures. To love is painful, that is true. Not to love is painful, too. But oh! It gives the greatest pain to love and not to be loved again." The subject of Muir's poem may well have been imaginary but Brown's observations can certainly be considered prescient. At twenty-two, in Prairie du Chien, Wisconsin, working with ice-boat inventor Wiard, John Muir wrote his brother, David, telling him of the people he was meeting. David, very much a ladies' man, replied, "I would like very well to hear that piano and Miss E.P. (excuse me, John) playing on it." Miss E.P. was, of course, Emily Pelton, niece of the proprietors of the Mandell House where Muir was living. In December of that same year, John Muir wrote his sister, Sarah, and her husband, David Galloway, of an occasion which shows a rather vivid picture of his social skills: UNIVERSITY OR page 1 (continued on page 3) PACIFIC

The Carnot project was an ambitious research project in heterogeneous databases. It integrated a variety of techniques to address a wide range of problems in achieving interoperation in heterogeneous environments. Here we describe some of the major implemented applications of this project. These applications concern(a) accessing a legacy scientific database, (b) automating a workflow involving legacy systems, (c) cleaning data, and (d) retrieving semantically appropriate information from structured databases in response to text queries. These applications support scientific decision support, business process management, data integrity enhancement, and analytical decision support, respectively. They demonstrate Carnot‘s capabilities for (a) heterogeneous query processing, …

Scanning tunneling microscopy and low energy electron diffraction show that high quality fcc Ni(111) films can be prepared on W(110). The subsequent coverage of this Ni template by monolayers of Fe leads to a Fe/Ni bilayer with striking magnetic properties. The Fe cap layer induces a spin reorientation of the easy axis of magnetization from in-plane to perpendicular to the film, as checked with the magneto-optic Kerr effect. At higher Fe coverages, an in-plane magnetization of the bilayer is found, which is proposed to be caused by the fcc to bcc transition in the Fe layer.

Still Lost In The Political Thicket (Or Why I Don't Understand The Concept Of Vote Dilution), Larry Alexander
Vanderbilt Law Review
I still don't get it. I can see why as partisans of this or that set of policies we will still care about how district lines are drawn, even if each district has an equal number of voters. We might wish to maximize black representation. We might wish to elect Democrats, or liberals, or incumbents. What I cannot see, however, is why the Constitution, or a supposedly nonpartisan measure like the Voting Rights Act,I should be enlisted in these partisan battles.
Professor Karlan does an admirable job of exploring whether and to what extent blacks benefit politically from being concentrated …
Soft Computing: Frontiers? A Case Study Of Hyper-Spectral Satellite Imaging, Scott A. Starks, Vladik Kreinovich
Soft Computing: Frontiers? A Case Study Of Hyper-Spectral Satellite Imaging, Scott A. Starks, Vladik Kreinovich
Departmental Technical Reports (CS)
Soft computing methods such as fuzzy control, neural networks, etc., often require lots of computations even for small amounts of data. It is, therefore, sometimes believed that for larger amounts of data, the required amount of computations will be so large that we will reach the frontiers of soft computing.
In this paper, we show, on the example of hyper-spectral satellite imaging, that this belief is often too pessimistic. We should not be afraid to use (or at least to try to use) soft computing methods even for large amounts of data.

The Australian Youth Survey Description Technical Paper No. 7, Australian Council For Educational Research (Acer)
LSAY Technical Reports
The Australian Youth Survey (AYS) is a major longitudinal survey of young Australians set up to provide policy-relevant information on young people's education and training pathways as well as their access to and success in the Australian labour market. The survey follows a nationally representative group of young people aged 16 to 19, with the initial cohort of approximately 5350 young people interviewed for the first time in 1989. Since then the sample has been interviewed annually on a wide range of topics including school experiences, school-to-work transition, labour market experiences, post-school education and training, income, health, housing and job …
