Computers Of Generation Omega, Vladik Kreinovich Jan 1997

Computers Of Generation Omega, Vladik Kreinovich

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

To make computers faster, we must take smaller and smaller processing elements, and to analyze these elements, we need to take into consideration more and more subtle quantum effects. A. Stern has shown a natural way to use quantum field theory for computing. It turns out that if we take into consideration all quantum effects, then this idea leads to an even faster performance.

Performing The Medieval Lyric: A Metrical-Accentual Approach, Roger Pensom Jan 1997

Performing The Medieval Lyric: A Metrical-Accentual Approach, Roger Pensom

Performance Practice Review

RILM abstract: Linguistic and metrical accents present many challenges to performers of Old French and Provencal verse. A hypothesis is presented that resolves these problems: If the verse-metrical structure varies from stanza to stanza in the context of a melody that is repeated from stanza to stanza, then the rhythmic structure of the melody changes, paralleling the meter of the verse. Bernart de Ventadorn's Can vei la lauzeta mover is used as an example."

Child Abuse And Juvenile Delinquency: A Review Of The Literature, Charlotte Center Anthony

Theses Digitization Project

There seems to be common agreement among practitioners and researchers in Criminal Justice that youth who are abused often become participants in the juvenile justice system. The current literature finds considerable evidence to support this position. However, some questions concerning the relationship between child abuse and juvenile delinquency remain. Specifically, how direct, or casual, is the link between the two? Are different groups of youth, such as Hispanic famales uniquely affected?

Assessment And Collaborative Writing: Conflict To Complement, John Michael Sullivan Jan 1997

Assessment And Collaborative Writing: Conflict To Complement, John Michael Sullivan

Theses Digitization Project

One of the fundamental problems facing writing instructors who use collaboration is that traditional assessment measures, such as in-class essay exams, undermine rather than support such writing activities that are rooted in social construction theory. While the use of collaboration in writing classrooms continues to grow, the field of assessment remains virtually silent about the compatibility of traditional assessment methods with collaborative writing tasks such as group work and peer review. This thesis discusses social construction and assessment theories, their relation to collaboration, and the current role of both in writing classrooms.

Theses Digitization Project

The purpose of this project was to design a one-year curriculum for 3 to 5 year old low-income and minority children in the Pasadena and Glendale area, with the goal of child-initiated learning. The content of the curriculum will consist of a modification of the High/Scope program, consisting of an active learning program and using a plan-do-review sequence. The proposed early childhood curriculum relies heavily on active, child-initiated learning experiences during which children plan, or express their intentions, carry out their intentions in play experiences and then reflect on their accomplishments.
