Roma And Forced Migration: An Annotated Bibliography, Dana Neacsu Mar 1997

Roma And Forced Migration: An Annotated Bibliography, Dana Neacsu

Books

As of 1997 there were between seven and eight and a half million Roma living in Europe. While there was ample literature on the Roma, in those pre-Internet times, there was no annotated bibliography of relevant works. This selected annotated bibliography assembled texts directly concerned with the forced migration of Roma, as well as other books, articles, periodicals, and various collections which provide background information on the Roma and their socio-economic, political and legal history. All the texts came from the NY Public Library collection. The compilation and the annotations were written by Dana Neacsu, at that time, a Consultant …

Assessment Of Nonverbal Cognitive Processes In Children With Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, Jacqueline J. Head Mar 1997

Assessment Of Nonverbal Cognitive Processes In Children With Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, Jacqueline J. Head

Faculty Publications - Doctor of Psychology (PsyD) Program

This study reviewed the literature on ADHD/ADD including a survey of the disorder, current clinical interventions and, diagnostic techniques. Data was collected comparing three groups of children (control, ADHD, ADD) on a newly developed nonverbal assessment test, the Leiter-R. The findings show that the Leiter-R resulted in significant differences in scores between the control group and the ADHD and ADD groups on twelve of the twenty subtests. This demonstrates the efficacy of the Leiter-R as an assessment tool for ADHD and ADD. Based on these findings the following tentative recommendations were proposed to assist children with ADHD and ADD. Children …

Working With Learning Disabled Writers: Some Perspectives, Bryan Bardine Mar 1997

Working With Learning Disabled Writers: Some Perspectives, Bryan Bardine

English Faculty Publications

During my career as an adult educator, I have spent a great deal of my time in the classroom trying to help my students improve their writing skills. The vast majority of my students had some type of learning disability, and trying to work with my students and approach their writing instruction in a way that would best help them became a very complex and often frustrating task both for me and for my students. It was obvious that most of them had a strong desire to enhance their writing skills, but an inordinate number of stumbling blocks seemed to …

Predicate Union And The Syntax Of Japanese Passives, Stanley Dubinsky Mar 1997

Predicate Union And The Syntax Of Japanese Passives, Stanley Dubinsky

Faculty Publications

This paper presents a relational account of the Japanese constructions that are commonly referred to as ‘passives’. They are shown to all be multipredicate, monoclausal constructions, with the differences between them primarily attributable to optionality in the lexical argument structure of the ‘passive’ predicate. The proposed analysis explains the differences between passives and causatives, despite their sometimes identical case-marking. Further, evidence from the interaction of unaccusative verbs and passive is shown to lead to a formal revision of the 1-Advancement Exclusiveness law. Finally, the differences between Japanese and Korean with respect to passives is reduced to a simple lexical difference …

Taking A Perspective: Hawthorne's Concept Of Language And Nineteenth-Century Language Theory, Patricia M. Roger Mar 1997

Taking A Perspective: Hawthorne's Concept Of Language And Nineteenth-Century Language Theory, Patricia M. Roger

English Faculty Publications

This essay examines Hathorne's concept of language and the characteristic indeterminacy of his writing in the context of nieteenth-century language study. Recently, two opposing theoretical postionss have emerged to account for this indeterminacy-the deconstructionist view as exemplified by J. Hillis Miller's analysis of 'The Minister's Black Veil' and the more historical and political view that Jonathan Arac Takes in 'The Politics of The Scarlet Letter.' I argue that although Hawthorne's indeterminacy may invite a deconstructionist analysis, it is a product of his historical context, not ours, and although, as Arac argues. Hawthornes's indeterminacy may be connected to a politics of …
