The Effects Of Teaching Two Syllable Types And One Syllabication Rule On The Spelling Achievement Of Students With Learning Disabilities, Tracey Ellen Taylor

Masters Theses

The purpose of this study was to determine whether teaching two syllable types and one syllabication rule in a reading program would affect the spelling achievement of students with learning disabilities. Seven fifth-grade students with learning disabilities from western-lower Michigan participated in this study. The intervention involved teaching the closed syllable and silent-e syllable in conjunction with the VC/CV syllabication rule. During the closed syllable phase and the silent-e phase, the students were given a ten word spelling test on Monday of each week. To determine spelling achievement, the students were evaluated for both word accuracy and syllable accuracy. The …

The Market For Loyalties And The Uses Of Comparative Media Law, Monroe E. Price Oct 1997

The Market For Loyalties And The Uses Of Comparative Media Law, Monroe E. Price

Cardozo Journal of International and Comparative Law

The article posits that media regulation is a tool used by governments to maintain power structures through the control of the "market for loyalties." This concept suggests that laws are employed to manage information and cultural narratives, ensuring that those in power retain their influence by shaping public allegiance. The author illustrates this through examples from various countries, demonstrating how each nation tailors its media laws to fit its unique political and cultural contexts.

History Of Indian Broadcasting Reform, Sevanti Ninan Oct 1997

History Of Indian Broadcasting Reform, Sevanti Ninan

Cardozo Journal of International and Comparative Law

The article explores the historical evolution of broadcasting reform in India, highlighting the tension between state control and the constitutional guarantee of freedom of speech under Article 19. It traces the development from colonial-era laws like the Indian Telegraph Act of 1885 to modern legislative and judicial efforts to balance public interest, cultural preservation, and technological advancements. The analysis underscores the recurring themes of autonomy for state media, competition from private and foreign broadcasters, and the need for regulatory frameworks to address these challenges.

Nabokov And Bergson: An Influence Of Independence, Susan Leanne Shaevitz Oct 1997

Nabokov And Bergson: An Influence Of Independence, Susan Leanne Shaevitz

English Theses & Dissertations

This thesis investigates the influence Henri Bergson's philosophy had on Vladimir Nabokov's writing. Bergson's major concerns, as espoused in Time and Free Will, Creative Evolution, and Matter and Memory, are recognized in Pale Fire, The Defense, and King, Queen, Knave, as well as in the various reworkings of the novelist's autobiography, Speak, Memory. These texts illustrate a shared concern with issues about time and space, aesthetic experience, instinct and analysis, and the importance of memory. At the heart of all of these matters rests a common concern for both writers--the primacy of lived experience and the necessity of free will. …

Unfunded Mandates And Fiscal Federalism: A Critique, Robert W. Adler Oct 1997

Unfunded Mandates And Fiscal Federalism: A Critique, Robert W. Adler

Vanderbilt Law Review

The term "unfunded federal mandates" is used to challenge federal obligations imposed on states and localities without accompanying funding. Unfunded mandates were alluded to by both the majority and dissenting opinions in Printz v. United States, in which provisions of the Brady Handgun Violence Protection Act were invalidated by the U.S. Supreme Court on Tenth Amendment grounds. In this Article, Professor Adler critiques the fiscal, legal, and policy arguments against unfunded federal mandates. This analysis, in turn, raises two broader issues. First, is the concept of unfunded mandates independently useful to the nation's ongoing debate about federal- ism? Second, does …

Job Mobility Of Entry-Level Workers: Black And Latina Women In Hospital Corridors, Maria Estella Carrión

New England Journal of Public Policy

Based on data from interviews with fifteen black and fifteen Latina women in entry-level jobs, this article discusses job access strategies, patterns of job mobility, and barriers to upward job mobility for low-income minority women in the hospital industry. Concentrated in the lowest wage levels and job tiers, they are quite diverse in subgroup composition, in age, and in training requirements. The research confirms that deficiencies in schooling and skills remain the major obstacles minority women confront when they apply for hospital jobs and restrict their opportunities once they are within the hospital labor market. Efforts to provide training and …
