Caprock Canyonlands Archeology: A Synthesis Of The Late Prehistory And History Of Lake Alan Henry And The Texas Panhandle-Plains Volume Ii, Douglas K. Boyd

Index of Texas Archaeology: Open Access Gray Literature from the Lone Star State

Archeological investigations at Lake Alan Henry, in Garza and Kent Counties, Texas, between 1987 and 1993 generated much archeological data relevant to interpreting late Holocene human activities. This review goes beyond the project boundary to synthesize the late prehistory and history of the Texas Panhandle Plains, with special emphasis on the north-south band of rugged canyons found along the Caprock Escarpment, herein defined as the Caprock Canyonlands. This synthesis looks at the human past from an ecological perspective, correlating shifts in subsistence, technology, and settlement patterns with inferred changes in paleoclimate, flora, and fauna. Past fluctuations in bison population size, …

Review: Sexual Symmetry: Love In The Ancient Novel And Related Genres, John F. Makowski Sep 1997

Review: Sexual Symmetry: Love In The Ancient Novel And Related Genres, John F. Makowski

Classical Studies: Faculty Publications and Other Works

Of the many recent books generated by the revived interest in the ancient novel, Konstan's is the most ambitious and the most outstanding both for its scope and brilliance of insight. Often employing an anthropological approach and informed by the theories of Foucault, the book makes an important contribution to the cultural history of the ancient world.

The Struggle Over Parcel C: How Boston’S Chinatown Won A Victory In The Fight Against Institutional Expansionism And Environmental Racism, Andrew Leong Sep 1997

The Struggle Over Parcel C: How Boston’S Chinatown Won A Victory In The Fight Against Institutional Expansionism And Environmental Racism, Andrew Leong

Institute for Asian American Studies Publications

For the last fifty years, Boston’s Chinatown has been a shrinking community. Squeezed in by highways on two sides, its land is being gradually consumed by two medical institutions, Tufts University Medical School and New England Medical Center. During the last few decades, these two medical institutions have swallowed up nearly one third of the land in Boston’s Chinatown. Despite this, both medical institutions want more. In its latest attempt at institutional expansion, New England Medical Center made an offer to the City of Boston in early 1993 to acquire a small plot of land in Chinatown called Parcel C, …

Attitudes Toward Sexuality And Sexual Behaviors Of Asian-American Adolescents: Implications For Risk Of Hiv Infection, Connie S. Chan Sep 1997

Attitudes Toward Sexuality And Sexual Behaviors Of Asian-American Adolescents: Implications For Risk Of Hiv Infection, Connie S. Chan

Institute for Asian American Studies Publications

Until 1990, Asian Americans represented an ethnic minority group that was perceived to be at lower risk than African Americans or Hispanics/Latinos for HIV infection, the presumed causal agent for AIDS. Reasons cited for this perception include behavioral differences in intravenous drug use, sexual behavioral habits, and underidentification of AIDS cases. However, in urban areas such as San Francisco, Toronto, New York, Boston, Los Angeles, and Seattle, where Asians have immigrated and settled in large numbers, cases of HIV infection and AIDS have begun to increase dramatically, perhaps reflecting the rise in the number of AIDS cases in Asia. New Learning Paradigms For Catholic Education, Angela Ann Zukowski Sep 1997

New Learning Paradigms For Catholic Education, Angela Ann Zukowski

Journal of Catholic Education

A paradigm shift is needed in Catholic education for the 21st century. The new paradigm needs to communicate that the purpose of Catholic education is not to transfer knowledge but to create environments and experiences that bring students to discover for themselves, to make students members of communities of learners that make discoveries and solve problems. The New Frontiers for Catholic Schools project supports educators in making technology a vital part of the future of Catholic education.

Public Administration And The Public Interest: Re-Presenting A Lost Concept, Gary S. Marshall, Enamu Choudhury

Public Administration Faculty Publications

This article analyzes how the concept of the public interest has been articulated in the field of public administration. It traces the intellectual development of the term and highlights the differences between a definition of the public interest that emphasizes a “community of meaning” and a definition that emphasizes the “objective control of administration.” The article then goes on to discuss how the current debates concerning the postmodern experience inform a definition of the public interest for the 21st century.

A Framework For Assessing The Rationality Of Judgments In Carcinogenicity Hazard Identification, Douglas J. Crawford-Brown, Kenneth G. Brown

RISK: Health, Safety & Environment (1990-2002)

Arguing that guidelines for identifying carcinogens now lack a philosophically rigorous framework, the authors present an alternative that draws clear attention to the process of reasoning towards judgments of carcinogenicity.

Knowledge Structures: An End To The Redundancy And The Confusion, Doreen Comerford Sep 1997

Knowledge Structures: An End To The Redundancy And The Confusion, Doreen Comerford

Link Foundation Modeling, Simulation and Training Fellowship Reports

Situation awareness (SA) is most commonly defined as "the perception of the elements in the environment within a volume of time and space, the comprehension of their meaning, and the projection of their status in the near future" (Endsley, 1995, p. 36). While researching this construct, we were continuously faced with several terms that, like SA, have themselves never been uniformly defined. For example, the following terms have, in some way, been associated with the construct known as SA: device model, domain model, mental model, script, schema, and "the picture" among others (c.f., Mogford, 1994; Endsley, 1995; Garland & Hopkin, …
