Regional Socioeconomic And Sociocultural Differences Among U.S. Latinos: The Effects Of Historical And Contemporary Latino Immigration/Migration Streams, Ed A. Munoz, Suzanne T. Ortega
Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)
In this paper we explore two potential sources of variation in the life experiences of Latinos in the United States: region of the country in which a group resides and national origin. Although scholars have recognized the theoretical importance of these two variables, few studies have empirically examined the relationship of region of the country and national origin to socioeconomic variables such as occupation, education, and income or to cultural variables such as bilingualism and English language proficiency. Data from the 1990 U.S. Census 5% Public Use Micro Sample show that both the social structural and cultural experiences of Latinos …
Review Of A Language Of Our Own: The Genesis Of Michif, The Mixed Cree-French Language Of The Canadian Metis By Peter Bakker, Paul Dube
Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)
In the current context of reconciliation between the Native peoples and the government of Canada, there may be no stronger outside voice to help the Metis people in their struggle to right the past, be recognized for their contribution to the building of Canada, and to prepare for future than Peter Bakker's brilliant and pioneering book. This study combines a complete knowledge and mastery of all relevant literature and documents, the expert linguist's own research in the field, and an obvious caring, human touch. Its main focus is the language of the Metis people-Michif- but it achieves much more.

Wolf Warriors And Turtle Kings: Native American Law Before The Blue Coats, Rennard Strickland
Wolf Warriors And Turtle Kings: Native American Law Before The Blue Coats, Rennard Strickland
Washington Law Review
One of the great myths of the white invention of the Indian was that there was no law among Native Americans before the white man except for a single Indian "primitive" legal system of blood revenge, uniform across the North American continent. This is not so. Law existed among Native Peoples long before white contact. Quite simply, the Indians had law. Before white contact, Native America nourished a rich and diverse system of law-a system of law that varied dramatically from people to people.

This essay, an expansion of remarks delivered at the LatCrit I Conference -- the first conference ever convened to discuss and explore critical legal thought from a Latina/o perspective -- develops a basis for articulating a LatCrit theory. As the introductory section, "LatCrit: The Voice for Latina/o Narratives" sets out, Latinas/os are a diverse community, whose identity components -- race, sex, ethnicity, language, and sexuality to name a few of the pertinent ones -- are indivisible yet diverse and varied. Such diversity, to date, has not allowed for a cohesive Latina/o theoretical model to be articulated. Rather, it has been …

Under the Kapok Tree: An Exploration in Dagbon is the result of a month of cross cultural research in Tamale and Yendi. Structured around the theme of the enskinment (installment) of the female chief of Gundogu, the paper seeks to elucidate the details and symbolism of this ritual, to uncover its origin and history, and to orient these findings within Dagomba society by using insights gained on the role of chieftaincy, and the role of royal class women in the community.

Reading And Metaphonological Outcomes In Late Talkers, Rhea Paul, Candace Murray, Kathleen Clancy, David Andrews
Communication Disorders Faculty Publications
Children with a history of slow expressive language development (SELD) were followed to second grade, at which point outcomes in terms of speech, language, cognitive skills, reading achievement, and metaphonological performance were evaluated. Although there were some statistically significant differences between groups, children with a history of SELD generally performed within the normal range on the measures collected. Relations among speech, reading, and metaphonology in the SELD cohort appeared to operate in a manner similar to that seen in groups with typical language development. The implications of these findings for understanding the nature of specific language impairments and for treating …

Community Health Sciences
Childhood pneumonia continues to be the second highest contributor to childhood morbidity and mortality in all ethnic groups in Pakistan. Information on community perceptions and management is largely limited to the Punjabi populace. In this study, ethno-specific illness terminologies, recognition and severity indicators and resort to treatment options for childhood pneumonia are explored among the two main ethnic groups in Sindh. Results are based on focus group discussions with 90 caretakers and 16 case history interviews. The findings indicate that pneumonia recognition is almost universal. The main recognition and severity indicator was pasli chalna (chest indrawing) followed by signs and …
