The Effects Of Early Intervention On Young Handicapped Children Who Are Nonverbal Or Have Limited Expressive Language Skills, Joyce Mott Anderson

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to investigate the impact of early intervention services on sixteen young handicapped children who were nonverbal or exhibited limited expressive verbal skills. It was proposed that these children would make gains in all areas of development including cognitive, receptive language, expressive language, fine motor, gross motor, self-help, and social/emotional as a result of carefully and systematically planned intervention. The subjects in this study had expressive language delays ranging from eight to thirty-three months. All children participated in an early intervention learning center that provided services noncategorically using a wholistic and transdisciplinary approach; The findings …

Today And Yesterday In Early Childhood Education In Korea, Guang- Lea Lee

Teaching & Learning Faculty Publications

Early childhood education has always been considered important in Korea, with the education of the child valued highly, regardless of the parent's educational background or socioeconomic status. The main social facility for early childhood education outside home in Korea is called "Yoo Chee Won," which means kindergarten. This paper describes the country's approach to early childhood education. The bulk of the paper describes "Yoo Chee Won," including demographic trends fueling its growth, figures on its availability and use, its cost, and the requirements for parent support. The paper details the national kindergarten curriculum and teacher education requirements. A concluding section …

Moved By The Spirit: Protestant Diffusion And Church Location In Central America, With A Case Study From Southwestern Honduras., Terri Shawn Mitchell Jan 1997

Moved By The Spirit: Protestant Diffusion And Church Location In Central America, With A Case Study From Southwestern Honduras., Terri Shawn Mitchell

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

This dissertation traces the evolution of Protestant missions in Central America from the colonial period to the present, focusing on the agents, direction, and methods of Protestant diffusion as well as the changing criteria for site selection. Chapters are arranged chronologically and progress from the macro-scale, Central America, to the micro-scale, six towns in southwestern Honduras (La Esperanza, Intibuca, Yamaranguila, San Juan, Erandique and Gracias). The chapters dealing with Central America outline when and where different mission boards have worked, as well as the geographical, economic, political and theological considerations driving site selection. The focus then narrows to patterns of …

Negotiating Literacy Instruction: Pedagogical Perceptions Of Secondary Preservice Teachers., Julie Hill Lester Jan 1997

Negotiating Literacy Instruction: Pedagogical Perceptions Of Secondary Preservice Teachers., Julie Hill Lester

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Secondary teachers face the challenge of planning instructional activities that combine their own subject knowledge with information from textbooks and other forms of text to help students learn content material. This study explores preservice teachers' perceptions regarding literacy instruction within the context of teaching and learning content material. The participants are senior secondary education students enrolled in a content area literacy course at a regional university in the southeast. Case studies are constructed for six preservice teachers representing different content areas. Qualitative data collection procedures included a questionnaire, guided journal entries, literacy autobiography, and personal interviews. Cross-case analysis was employed. …

An Examination Of Two Contemporary Techniques In Five Works For Solo Bassoon: Descriptions And Performance Suggestions., Steve Vacchi Jan 1997

An Examination Of Two Contemporary Techniques In Five Works For Solo Bassoon: Descriptions And Performance Suggestions., Steve Vacchi

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Much of the literature for solo bassoon of the past few decades is partially dependent upon the player's ability to use contemporary techniques. While it is atypical for an entire composition to rely on such devices, a significant volume of recent solo literature may be unplayable to those who have not mastered them. My aim is to help solo bassoonists in perfecting two specific contemporary techniques: fluttertongue and singing while playing. Though quite standard for other woodwind instruments such as the flute, these techniques have not been adequately described for bassoonists. The repertoire chosen for this project represents works for …

A Theory Of Cortical Neural Processing., David Timothy Young Jan 1997

A Theory Of Cortical Neural Processing., David Timothy Young

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

This dissertation puts forth an original theory of cortical neural processing that is unique in its view of the interplay of chaotic and stable oscillatory neurodynamics and is meant to stimulate new ideas in artificial neural network modeling. Our theory is the first to suggest two new purposes for chaotic neurodynamics: (i) as a natural means of representing the uncertainty in the outcome of performed tasks, such as memory retrieval or classification, and (ii) as an automatic way of producing an economic representation of distributed information. We developed new models, to better understand how the cerebral cortex processes information, which …

A Feminist Study Of African American Art In New Orleans: Considerations Of Aesthetics, Art History And Art Criticism., Harriet Joanne Walker Jan 1997

A Feminist Study Of African American Art In New Orleans: Considerations Of Aesthetics, Art History And Art Criticism., Harriet Joanne Walker

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

How students are taught to think about what is considered "art" and who are "artists" contributes to their sense of self within the world. It can confine them to accept a system that devalues and excludes or it can inspire them to explore the political dimensions of art, to recognize social contradictions, and to contribute to cultural dialogue. The purpose of this study is to provide content for an art curriculum that develops the intellectual capabilities and broadens the critical consciousness of students. The study of aesthetics, art history, and art criticism offer possibilities for understanding the multiple social, historical, …

Introduction: The Hindu-Christian-Science Trialogue, Klaus K. Klostermaier Jan 1997

Introduction: The Hindu-Christian-Science Trialogue, Klaus K. Klostermaier

Journal of Hindu-Christian Studies

As an enthusiastic practitioner of Hindu-Christian dialogue in India in the sixties, I noted how frequently my Hindu dialogue partners resorted to modern science to make their points. They either drew parallels between ideas held by classical Indian authors and modern scientific findings, or they claimed "Vedic" origins for contemporary scientific or technical developments. More often than not they would perceive complete harmony between Vedanta and twentieth-century Western science, detailing how contemporary physics was supporting Advaita Vedanta or how Darwin's theory of evolution had been anticipated by Samkhya. Having had a lifelong interest in the sciences I found this turn …

Analysis And Comparison Of Title I Programs In Rural School Districts In Central Illinois, Rebecca K. Kuhn Jan 1997

Analysis And Comparison Of Title I Programs In Rural School Districts In Central Illinois, Rebecca K. Kuhn

Masters Theses

The purpose of this study was to analyze and compare Title I programs in small, rural school districts in Central Illinois. The reauthorization of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act, referred to as the Improving America's Schools Act of 1994, has been a significant factor in redesigning Title I programs. The new trend in Title I programming focuses on accountability for maximum student achievement rather than the traditional issues concerning fiscal record keeping and detailed documentation that money was used to supplement, rather than supplant, existing programs. The coordination of funding sources and programs is encouraged by the reauthorization to …

The Geography Of Polynesians In Utah, Adam M. Frazier Jan 1997

The Geography Of Polynesians In Utah, Adam M. Frazier

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis explores the unique history and geography of Polynesians within Utah. In particular, the historic and current migrations of Hawaiians, Samoans, and Tongans to Utah are examined, and the 1980 and 1990 distributions of Polynesians are mapped and analyzed at three scales: in the United States by state, in Utah by county, and in Salt Lake City by census tract.

Historically, Polynesia's relationship with Utah has been religious, specifically of conversion to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints followed by migration to Utah. Today, however, things are changing. Nevertheless, Polynesians continue to migrate to Utah primarily for …

Rfra-Vote Gambling: Why Paulsen Is Wrong, As Usual, Suzanna Sherry Jan 1997

Rfra-Vote Gambling: Why Paulsen Is Wrong, As Usual, Suzanna Sherry

Vanderbilt Law School Faculty Publications

Supreme Court currents are no less treacherous to navigators than are river currents-and, as Michael Paulsen himself has previously pointed out, RFRA shares more than a linguistic resonance with a river.1 Unfortunately, this time Paulsen has let himself be fooled by the prevailing political winds into believing that there will be smooth sailing for his favorite statute despite the swirling eddies ahead. He is altogether too confident of a favorable result. Although I have no wagers, public or private (and I am shocked-shocked!-to find gambling in this establishment) on the outcome of Boeme v. Flores, I want to use my …

Voicing Differences (Comment), Margaret E. Montoya Jan 1997

Voicing Differences (Comment), Margaret E. Montoya

Faculty Scholarship

Jane Aiken and Kimberly O'Leary undertake the difficult work of developing specific approaches and techniques for taking account of characteristics such as race/ethnicity, gender, dis/ability, and sexual identity in clinical pedagogy. Carolyn Grose uses outsider narratives and popular culture to challenge the "pre-understanding" of students, and to assist them to accept client stories as true and valid. Focusing on the professional value of striving to promote justice, fairness, and morality identified in the MacCrate Report, Professor Aiken exhorts us to promote justice by unmasking privilege, the invisible package of unearned assets--about which I (we? or you?) was "meant" to remain …

The Armstrong Principle, The Narratives Of Takings, And Compensation Statutes, William Michael Treanor Jan 1997

The Armstrong Principle, The Narratives Of Takings, And Compensation Statutes, William Michael Treanor

Georgetown Law Faculty Publications and Other Works

The Takings Clause of the Fifth Amendment is famous for inspiring disagreement. More than one hundred years have passed since the Supreme Court departed from the original understanding of the clause and interpreted regulations as potentially falling within its ambit. Although the passage of time has established the principle that regulations can run afoul of the Takings Clause, the Court has been unable to offer a coherent vision of when compensation is required. Academic commentators also have failed to reach agreement on the issue, offering an enormous range of solutions to the takings question. The newest field of controversy involves …
