Is This Appropriate?, Thomas L. Shaffer, Julia B. Meister Jan 1997

Is This Appropriate?, Thomas L. Shaffer, Julia B. Meister

Journal Articles

The word "appropriate" is so wildly overused in American culture that, as with other vacuous words and phrases, a person learns to read right through it. "Appropriate" is verbal tofu. This Essay pauses instead of reading through, particularly to notice the instances in which "appropriate" and its negative counterpart are used to give the appearance of a moral or legal judgment.

"Appropriate," chosen to express a legal judgment, is not only vacuous; it is also irresponsible. It catches the legislator, judge, or administrator in the act of passing the buck, as the President did when he ordered the Justice Department …

Wyclif On Rights, Stephen E. Lahey Jan 1997

Wyclif On Rights, Stephen E. Lahey

Department of Classics and Religious Studies: Faculty Publications

In the study of medieval political philosophy the tendency has been to pay attention to thinkers who appear to have contributed to the birth of the modem. While the value in coming to understand how modem political thought developed is undeniable, this tendency is accompanied by an implicit, perhaps unintentional, devaluation of the study of that which did not contribute as obviously to modernity. In the history of the idea of the natural right scholars have distinguished between the objective and the subjective right, characterizing the subjective right as what lies at the heart of the classically modem and liberal. …

Review Of Robert Stefanotti, O.Carm, The Phoenix Of Rennes; The Life And Poetry Of John Of St. Samson 1571-1636, Elizabeth Wilhelmsen

Spanish Language and Literature Papers

This monograph deals with the life and work of John of St. Samson. lay brother of the Carmelite Ancient Observance, reformer, mystic. author of spiritual treatises and poet. Curiously, this blind prolific Counter-Reformation era author is little known today even by his compatriots and is virtually unknown outside the French-speaking world.

In his analysis of the formal elements of Jean's work, Stefanotti stresses the mystic's preference for classical structures: in poetry, the sonnet; in music, the chanson. Among figures of speech, Jean was fond of "coupling, tripling, oxymoron, often employed to express paradox (p. 66, 70). The author points to …

Juno Moneta: On The Erotics Of The Marketplace, Jeanne L. Schroeder Jan 1997

Juno Moneta: On The Erotics Of The Marketplace, Jeanne L. Schroeder

Articles

The article explores how property and the feminine, as legal fictions, facilitate the creation of subjectivity through the lens of Hegelian philosophy and Lacanian psychoanalysis. It critiques the liberal individual as an insufficient concept for subjectivity, arguing that subjectivity is constructed, not natural. The analysis examines how legal frameworks privilege masculine metaphors, such as possession, while repressing feminine ones, and posits that the pursuit of a perfect market represents a destructive ideal that undermines freedom and subjectivity.

Teaching Phoneme-Grapheme Correspondence Rules To Children With Learning Difficulties : An Implementation Of The Fernald Method, Paula Kinsman

Theses : Honours

A single subject design was used to investigate the effectiveness of the Fernald method as an instructional technique for teaching phoneme-grapheme correspondence rules. Participants were tour primary grade children with learning difficulties in reading. Intervention training focussed on teaching phoneme-grapheme correspondence rules through the implementation of an adapted version of the Fernald method. The two dependent variables were word recognition and fluency rates. The design of the study allowed analysis of maintenance and generalisation of the relevant variables. Results demonstrated an increase in word recognition skills and fluency rates by all four children with learning difficulties. Maintenance of these gains …

The emerging philosophy of the Multicultural and Diversity Committee is that excellence in education cannot be achieved without educational equity for all who enter our schools. This includes (but is not limited to) females, males, people of color, people who live in poverty, people who live alternative lifestyles, people with disabilities, people with a language background other than English, people of all ages, and people who have recently immigrated to the United States. Educational equity is defined by processes that work against marginalization and foster knowledge of and respect for the diverse nature of our population.

There is a recent preoccupation in American schools to involve parents and the community in our children's education. Hillary Clinton's "It takes a village" is a phrase that has become almost as catchy in the 90's as Nancy Reagan's "Just say no" was in the 80's, and unfortunately almost as naively simplistic.

A Reevaluation Of Lower Colorado Buff Ware Ceramics: Redefining The Patayan In Southern Nevada, Gregory Richard Seymour

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Archaeological investigations in the Las Vegas area have collected significant ceramic data that have yet to be the subject of a systematic analysis. This thesis addresses issues relating to trade, exchange, and the manufacture of Lower Colorado Buff Ware ceramics found in the Las Vegas Valley. Archival research, and examination of representative ceramic assemblages from this region, address problems with existing regional models, including chronologic placement, ethnic origin, and culture change. Previous typological models, and past and present environmental conditions are presented, as well as a cultural historic context in which to place this data. Finally, a model of settlement …

Automatic Clustering And Feedback In Information Retrieval, Girish Venkatachaliah

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Clustering and feedback have been used in information retrieval to improve the effectiveness of retrieving relevant documents. In this thesis, we investigate the retrieval effectiveness from various document collections in presence of both clustering and feedback. More precisely, we apply a clustering algorithm to an initial run of our queries to choose appropriate clusters for feedback. The clustering and feedback are done automatically.

The Credibility Of News Photography In The Digital Age, Mara Evonne Vernon Jan 1997

The Credibility Of News Photography In The Digital Age, Mara Evonne Vernon

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Photographers have been manipulating photographs since photography's invention, but digital imaging technology presents photographers with unlimited possibilities. Digital imaging technology allows both simple and complex manipulations to be completed easily and quickly, unlike traditional techniques that are both difficult and time consuming. Additionally, detecting digital manipulation is virtually impossible, jeopardizing photography's referent to the original scene captured through the lens of a photographer's camera; A review of the literature demonstrated a need for research in relation to the media consumer because prior research focused on media practitioners and their tolerance or intolerance for digital manipulation practices. This thesis explores the …

A Critical Analysis Of Barriers That Inhibit Latino Parent Involvement As Students Make The Transition From Esl To Mainstream Classrooms, Linda R Skroback-Heisler

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to explore the perspectives of Latino families concerning parent involvement roles while their children made the transition from ESL to mainstream classrooms. Three families were interviewed individually at eight week intervals for ten months. Using critical theory as a framework, data sources established three themes of status quo describing parents' knowledge and beliefs during prior experiences, ESL class, and during the year their fourth grade children were mainstreamed. Initially coded by constant comparative methods, a second and critical analysis of data uncovered the fourth theme: barriers encountered by Latino parents during the mainstream year. …
