Mapping Antibiotic-Resistant Neisseria Gonorrhoeae Isoaltes In Metropolitan Toronto: Issues Of Scale, Positional Accuracy And Confidentiality, Jody F. Decker, Bob Sharpe, Jo-Anne Dillon Oct 1997

Mapping Antibiotic-Resistant Neisseria Gonorrhoeae Isoaltes In Metropolitan Toronto: Issues Of Scale, Positional Accuracy And Confidentiality, Jody F. Decker, Bob Sharpe, Jo-Anne Dillon

Geography and Environmental Studies Faculty Publications

The primary objective of this paper was to investigate the methodological implications of mapping Neisseria gonorrhoeae using the partial three-digit postal code instead of the complete six-digit postal code. The reporting locations of N gonorrhoeae isolates submitted from hospitals, doctor’s offices, private and provincial laboratories, and sexually transmitted disease (STD) clinics were used as a model. Specifically, the paper focused on variations in geographical distributions of STD data when mapped at different aggregations of postal code data and at different map scales. Such variations are of importance to those who analyze the spaital epidemiology of STDs, and the accessibility and …

Protein Phosphatase Β, A Putative Type‐2a Protein Phosphatase From The Human Malaria Parasite Plasmodium Falciparum, J Li, Da Baker Oct 1997

Protein Phosphatase Β, A Putative Type‐2a Protein Phosphatase From The Human Malaria Parasite Plasmodium Falciparum, J Li, Da Baker

Peninsula Medical School

Protein phosphatases play a critical role in the regulation of the eukaryotic cell cycle and signal transduction. A putative protein serine/threonine phosphatase gene has been isolated from the human malaria parasite Plasmodium falciparum. The gene has an unusual intron that contains four repeats of 32 nucleotides and displays a high degree of size polymorphism among different strains of P. falciparum. The open reading frame reconstituted by removal of the intron encodes a protein of 466 amino acids with a predicted molecular mass of approximately 53.7 kDa. The encoded protein, termed protein phosphatase β (PP-β), is composed of two distinct domains. …

Attitudes Toward Sexuality And Sexual Behaviors Of Asian-American Adolescents: Implications For Risk Of Hiv Infection, Connie S. Chan Sep 1997

Attitudes Toward Sexuality And Sexual Behaviors Of Asian-American Adolescents: Implications For Risk Of Hiv Infection, Connie S. Chan

Institute for Asian American Studies Publications

Until 1990, Asian Americans represented an ethnic minority group that was perceived to be at lower risk than African Americans or Hispanics/Latinos for HIV infection, the presumed causal agent for AIDS. Reasons cited for this perception include behavioral differences in intravenous drug use, sexual behavioral habits, and underidentification of AIDS cases. However, in urban areas such as San Francisco, Toronto, New York, Boston, Los Angeles, and Seattle, where Asians have immigrated and settled in large numbers, cases of HIV infection and AIDS have begun to increase dramatically, perhaps reflecting the rise in the number of AIDS cases in Asia. In …

Commentary On Linda Mealey (1995), The Sociobiology Of Sociopathy: An Integrated Evolutionary Model, Scott F. Stoltenberg, Joseph L. Hernandez Cruz, Don Joseph Stein, Linda Mealey Sep 1997

Commentary On Linda Mealey (1995), The Sociobiology Of Sociopathy: An Integrated Evolutionary Model, Scott F. Stoltenberg, Joseph L. Hernandez Cruz, Don Joseph Stein, Linda Mealey

Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications

[SFS] When Genotype × Environment (G × E) interactions are present, heritability estimates are not interpretable. Mealey cites abundant evidence for G × E interactions in the etiology of sociopathy, thereby completely undermining estimates of the heritability of sociopathy which form the foundation of her model. Without proper evidence for a genetic basis of sociopathy, Mealey’s sociobiological model collapses under its own great weight.

[LM] It is impossible to discuss the constructs “heritability,” “theory of mind,” and “normality” in a single coherent essay. The following three rejoinders address each of these exceedingly complex constructs individually, as each relates to the …

Update And Review Of Blastomycosis, Deardre Chao, Kenneth J. Steier, Remi Gomila Sep 1997

Update And Review Of Blastomycosis, Deardre Chao, Kenneth J. Steier, Remi Gomila

Faculty and Staff Publications

Blastomycosis has a wide spectrum of clinical presentations. When a patient presents with chronic pneumonia, especially coexisting with cutaneous lesions, blastomycosis infection needs to be considered in the differential diagnosis. Erythema nodosum can rarely be associated with pulmonary blastomycosis. A positive culture is the gold standard of diagnosis; occasionally, the organism can be identified by its typical "shoe print" morphology with periodic acid-Schiff (PAS) stain. The Gen-Probe technique may be required to confirm the uncertain culture results. The preferred treatment for blastomycosis in less severe cases is oral itraconazole, with amphotericin B in disseminated cases.

Bioethics Policy: Looking Beyond The Power Of Sovereign Governments (Foreword), Robert L. Schwartz Sep 1997

Bioethics Policy: Looking Beyond The Power Of Sovereign Governments (Foreword), Robert L. Schwartz

Faculty Scholarship

Lawyers are trained to think in terms of power exercised by a sovereign-an institution authorized to enforce a procedurally appropriate decision with coercive force.' Generally, lawyers have a broad notion of what constitutes a sovereign. In the United States, for example, this notion includes the federal government, state governments, most tribal units, traditional territorial governments and their agencies-e.g., school boards, local public park districts, water run-off management districts, and flea abatement boards-and a host of other institutions. As a result, it is difficult for lawyers to recognize that policy also may emanate from other institutions that possess only persuasive authority, …

Drugs Effect, Daisy Fang Sep 1997

Drugs Effect, Daisy Fang

Theses

This thesis project is a 3 minutes 30 seconds computer generated animation that includes 2D graphics design, 2D animation, 3D modeling and animation. In addition, an optional interactive multimedia project serves as the introduction to this animation. I chose this subject because I think computer graphics is a tool that enables the impossible to become possible. The illusory effects of drug abuse by the user can be portrayed by means of computer graphics. The main focus of this thesis project is to try to make my audience (youth) understand that drugs abuse is the point of no return. One becomes …
