Hiv Transmission Risk Behaviors Of Hiv-Positive Adolescents In Mississippi, Kristi A. Henderson
Hiv Transmission Risk Behaviors Of Hiv-Positive Adolescents In Mississippi, Kristi A. Henderson
MSN Research Projects
Risk behaviors for transmission of the human immunodeficiency virus are prevalent among adolescents. One outcome of continued participation in risk behaviors is increased prevalence of HIV. Based on Fishbein and Ajzen's Theory of Reasoned Action (1975), a descriptive design was utilized to examine, the following research question: What are the HIV transmission risk behaviors of HIV-positive adolescents? The Henderson Risk Behavior Participation Survey was utilized to examine HIV transmission risk behaviors among adolescents already infected with HIV. The sample for this study was comprised of 24 adolescents age 11 to 21 years who were drawn from two infectious disease clinics …
Comparisons Of Outcomes In A Pediatric Primary Care Clinic In Patients Treated By A Physician Or A Nurse Practitioner, Ken Burnette
Comparisons Of Outcomes In A Pediatric Primary Care Clinic In Patients Treated By A Physician Or A Nurse Practitioner, Ken Burnette
MSN Research Projects
Physician availability during the 2 0th century has waxed and waned. During periods of physician shortage and surplus, there have always been underserved segments of our society. Nurse practitioners (NPs) have provided care for these underserved populations. Unfortunately, 30 years after the first NPs began to practice there remain underserved populations and underutilized practitioners. The purpose of this study was to compare outcomes between physicians and practitioners. The research questions are the following: Is there a difference in patient's satisfaction between care provided by a physician and a nurse practitioner? Does care differ when initiated by a physician or a …

The Beneficial Effect Of Vitamin E And Selenium During Experimental Chagas' Disease, Yue Hou
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
The present study was conducted to determine if vitamin E and selenium could have a positive synergistic effect during experimental Chagas' disease. In the first phase of the study, 25 female C3HeB/FeJ mice were infected with a Brazil strain of Trypanosoma cruzi while receiving vitamin E supplementation of 0 IU/kg, 200 IU/kg, 400 IU/kg, 600 IU/kg, 800 IU/kg in their diets. In the second phase, 20 female C3HeB/FeJ mice were infected while receiving 400 IU/kg vitamin E plus selenium supplementation of 2 ppm, 4 ppm, 8 ppm, 16 ppm in their drinking water. The results demonstrate that vitamin E does …

Evolutionary Constraints On Population Structure: The Parasites Of Fundulus Zebrinus (Pisces: Cyprinodontidae) In The South Platte River Of Nebraska, John J. Janovy Jr., Scott D. Snyder, Richard E. Clopton
Biology Faculty Publications
Population and community descriptor values (parasites per host, prevalence per parasite species, variance/mean ratios, species density, and diversity indices) for the 7-species parasite community of 61 relatively homogeneous samples of Fundulus zebrinus (Pisces: Cyprinodontidae) in the South Platte River of Nebraska, U.S.A., taken over a 14-yr period, are reported. South Platte River streamflow fluctuates over two orders of magnitude on several time scales-monthly, annually, and over multiple year wet-dry cycles. Relatively homogeneous sampling of a single host species with several parasite species provided a system that allowed assessment of the contribution of evolved parasite life cycles to population structure in …

Two New Species Of Litomosoides (Nemata: Onchocercidae) From Ctenomys Opimus (Rodentia: Ctenomyidae) On The Altiplano Of Bolivia, Sara V. Brant, Scott Lyell Gardner
Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Faculty Publications
Two filarioid nematodes, Litomosoides andersoni n. sp. and Litomosoides ctenomyos n. sp. (Nemata: Onchocercidae), are described from the mesenteries of the subterranean rodent Ctenomys opimus (Rodentia: Hystrichognathi) collected on the altiplano of Bolivia. Specimens collected near Rancho Huancaroma (Oruro Dept.) in 1984 and 1986 can be recognized as undescribed by the structures of the spicules and stoma and the shape of the ovijector. This record represents the first time members of the genus Litomosoides have been recovered from rodents of the family Ctenomyidae; this also represents the first published report of these nematodes from mammals in Bolivia.

Neonatal Hypersusceptibility To Endotoxin Correlates With Increased Tumor Necrosis Factor Production In Mice, Vitaliano Cusumano, Giuseppe Mancuso, Francesco Genovese, Maria Cuzzola, Maria Carbone, James A. Cook, Joel B. Cochran, Giuseppe Teti
MUSC Faculty Journal Articles
Septic shock is a major cause of mortality in neonates. The hypothesis was tested that neonatal, age is associated with altered sensitivity to shock-inducing bacterial products or proinflammatory, cytokines (or both). Mice of different ages were inoculated with various doses of lipopolysaccharide, (LPS), superantigenic staphylococcal enterotoxin B (SEB), or recombinant tumor necrosis factor-α, (rTNF-α), alone or in combination with the sensitizing agent D-galactosamine. Neonatal mice were, markedly more susceptible to LPS-induced lethality but more resistant to SEB than were adults (P, < .05). Mice of different ages did not differ, however, in their sensitivity to lethal activities of rTNFα. Neonatal susceptibility to LPS and SEB correlated directly with plasma TNF-α but not IFN-γ, levels, which was confirmed by TNF-α and IFN-γ blockade experiments. These data document, marked age-related differences in the pathophysiology of septic shock and suggest that IFN-γ is, not an obligatory mediator of either LPS- or SEB-induced lethality in neonates.

The Hiv Litigation And Its Settlement [In Japan], Awaji Takehisa, Keisuke Mark Abe
Washington International Law Journal
As early as 1983, Japan's Health and Welfare Ministry had reason to know that the use of unheated blood products by hemophiliacs was infecting them with HIV, the AIDS virus. Although heated-and safe-blood products were already available from the United States, government approval in Japan was deliberately delayed for almost three years while local pharmaceutical companies developed the products. By the time the unheated blood products were all withdrawn from the market, many of Japan's hemophiliacs had contracted HIV. A number of them, or their survivors, sued the government and the pharmaceutical companies. At the end of the consolidated trials, …

Cat Plague - Veterinarian Caution, Clell Bagley
All Current Publications
Plague has been in the news from several areas in the much from world. The Center for Disease Control has become especially concerned about two aspects of plague (and these concerns affect veterinarians in Utah very directly); first, plague has been increasing in recent years in the western states and second, cats are being recognized more often as being associated with human plague cases.

Infectious Cattle Diseases And Vaccines, Clell Bagley
All Current Publications
Vaccines are available for 20 to 30 infectious diseases of cattle. With the various brand names and different combinations available, the choice of vaccines can become very complicated. Calves vaccinated under 6 months of age should generally be re-vaccinated again after that age to provide a longer lasting immunity.
