Peter Goodrich's Oedipus Lex critically examines the English common law tradition through a psychoanalytic lens, revealing a 'legal unconscious' that underscores deep-seated repressions and contradictions. He argues that common law has historically attempted to exclude imagery and the feminine, yet these elements persist, leading to internal conflicts. By analyzing historical legal texts from the Elizabethan and Jacobean periods, Goodrich exposes violent rhetoric against enemies of the common law, such as Catholics and women, highlighting the law's struggle with its own unconscious structures.
Reading The Wreckage: De-Encrypting Eliot's Aesthetics Of Empire, Paul Douglass
Reading The Wreckage: De-Encrypting Eliot's Aesthetics Of Empire, Paul Douglass
Faculty Publications, English and Comparative Literature
The writer examines an aesthetics of empire evident in Eliot's The Waste Land. He contends that though this work's formal innovations appear “revolutionary,” its aesthetics fit into modernism's reactionary character and reflect the cultural politics of the British conservatism that Eliot had adopted. In decoding the poem's fragments and allusions, he illustrates Eliot's preoccupation with empire. He also shows how The Waste Land may be seen as part of a British literary tradition of “reading the wreckage” that goes back at least to Edward Volney's Ruins (1791).

So much depends upon a rope in Mobile, Alabama. To hang Michael Donald, Henry Hays and James "Tiger" Knowles tied up "a piece of nylon rope about twenty feet long, yellow nylon." They borrowed the rope from Frank Cox, Hays's brother-in-law. Cox "went out in the back" of his mother's "boatshed, or something like that, maybe it was in the lodge." He "got a rope," climbed into the front seat of Hays's Buick Wildcat, and handed it to Knowles sitting in the back seat. So much depends upon a noose. Knowles "made a hangman's noose out of the rope," thirteen …
Instructional Lessons And Activities For Middle School Science Teachers, Sally Josephine Rich
Instructional Lessons And Activities For Middle School Science Teachers, Sally Josephine Rich
All Graduate Projects
The significance of providing an inquiry based, hands-on approach to teaching science to middle school students was researched. Several sources supported this teaching method. The research suggested having students participate in engaging, thought provoking, and problem solving science activities to optimize successful student learning. Lessons and activities, which focus on active student learning, critical thinking and problem solving, were developed to enhance and revise the existing curriculum for five chosen textbooks. These selected science texts were intended for middle school sixth and seventh grade students.

To know who we are, we need to know where we came from. It is memory that links us to the past and memory fades the further we progress from those generations which contributed to the formation of our identity. Today with changes in our society and our communities esculating at an increasingly rapid rate, each passing year finds the patterns of development in our communal past becoming harder to decipher and an increasing reliance on information which itself has become distorted by cultural differences and time. Before the formative years of the City of Santa Clara slip into the …

The basic assumption behind this project is that all humanistic inquiries more or less explicitly involve self-discovery. I have chosen to try to be more rather than less explicit. I have realized for some time now that I am both a problem and a promise for the primary field in which I was academically socialized: biblical (New Testament) studies as defined and practiced by the guilds of biblical scholars in North America. I have provided enough evidence that I can “play the game” that the guilds require in terms of publications, research projects, and general scholarly orientation. And as such …

Imitation Pedagogy: The Ongoing Debate, Nancy Joyce Snow
Theses Digitization Project
Imitation was one of the five teaching methods passed down from the Greeks and was, from antiquity down to the nineteenth century, highly respected among scholars and educators. However, imitation has lost status as a viable pedagogy, and especially perhaps in the field of composition studies.
Accounting History: The Contribution Of Osamu Zojima, John K. Courtis
Accounting History: The Contribution Of Osamu Zojima, John K. Courtis
Accounting Historians Journal
In 1987, Professor Kojima published his 16 chapter Japanese version of Introduction to Accounting History. His intention was to prepare an English translation, but he died on 21 February 1989 from cardiac infarction having reached the middle of the 13th chapter with an unfinished handwritten first draft. After this draft was subsequently typed, the unfinished portion of the English translation was completed by Mr E. Usami. Consultation with Professor B. S. Yamey resulted in the correction of errors by Professor Kojima's loyal colleagues, Professors Yoshihiro Hirabayashi (Osaka City University), Hiroyasu Okitsu (Kinki University) and Tsuneo Nakano (Kobe University). The translation …
