The Social Unit Plan (1916-1920): An Experiment In Democracy And Human Services Fails, Robert Blundo Sep 1997

The Social Unit Plan (1916-1920): An Experiment In Democracy And Human Services Fails, Robert Blundo

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

Participatory democracy and community development are explored by looking back to the bold experiment undertaken in Cincinnati, Ohio, from 1916 to 1920, called the Social Unit Plan. It is a glimpse into the economic, political, cultural and social consciousness of those who participated in the experiment during that period in American history. The paper suggests that by understanding the cultural and social lives of participants, our awareness of the range of options or possible efforts at addressing human social welfare needs in the past and the present are enhanced.

Flying Universities: Educational Movements In Poland 1882-1905 And 1977-1981, A Socio-Historical Analysis, Gregory A. Lukasik Aug 1997

Flying Universities: Educational Movements In Poland 1882-1905 And 1977-1981, A Socio-Historical Analysis, Gregory A. Lukasik

Masters Theses

In Poland in 1977, a group of intellectuals formed an independent educational enterprise under the name "Flying University." Interestingly, the original "Flying University" was organized by a group of radical professors nearly a century earlier, at a time when the Polish state disappeared from the political map of Europe. I was interested in seeing whether the two were the same, as their common name would suggest, or if they differed in any respect. I attempted to answer this question by focusing on the so-called universities' memberships, ideologies, and objectives.

I have followed the method of interpretive historical sociology (Skocpol, 1979) …

Political Culture On The Northern Plains : North Dakota And The Nonpartisan Experience, Thomas P. Shilts Aug 1997

Political Culture On The Northern Plains : North Dakota And The Nonpartisan Experience, Thomas P. Shilts

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis investigates the history of North Dakota during the era of the Nonpartisan League (roughly 1915 through 1921). A significant body of research on the League exists, but no study has yet specifically addressed itself to exploring the political culture of the League and of its opponents in such a way that the full nature of the Nonpartisan "revolt" is made clear. The League was indeed the result of farmers’ perception of economic exploitation at the hands of big business, yet it was more basically a proactive struggle for inclusion. While employing elements of agrarian ideology, the League was …

Spider Wasps Of Colorado (Hymenoptera, Pompilidae): An Annotated Checklist, Howard E. Evans Jul 1997

Spider Wasps Of Colorado (Hymenoptera, Pompilidae): An Annotated Checklist, Howard E. Evans

Great Basin Naturalist

One hundred forty-three species of Pompilidae are recorded from Colorado, slightly more than half the number occurring north of Mexico. Some of these occur principally at higher altitudes or in the northern part of the state; this group includes 5 species of Holarctic distribution. Others (such as the tarantula hawks, Pepsis) are prevalent across the southern third of the state and range south into New Mexico and often into Mexico. Still others are widely distributed wherever there is friable soil and suitable for nesting. Certain genera are more or less restricted to preying upon certain spider taxa, while others …

Cultural, Historical, And Subcultural Contexts Of Adolescence: Implications For Health And Development, Lisa J. Crockett Jun 1997

Cultural, Historical, And Subcultural Contexts Of Adolescence: Implications For Health And Development, Lisa J. Crockett

Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications

Although clearly influenced by biological and psychological growth, adolescent development is also molded by the social and cultural context in which it occurs. As the transition from childhood to adulthood, adolescence is closely tied to the structure of adult society, and the expectations for youth during this period reflect, in important ways, the skills and qualities deemed important for success in adult roles (Benedict, 1937; Havighurst, 194811972). Furthermore, prevailing demographic, economic, and political conditions determine the adult occupational and social roles to which young people can aspire, as well as the access to and competition for those roles (Elder, 1975). …

A Historical Study Of Payola: Advertising And Public Relations Or Bribery, Christina Guadagno Jun 1997

A Historical Study Of Payola: Advertising And Public Relations Or Bribery, Christina Guadagno

Theses and Dissertations

Payola helps get songs played on radio stations. Decades ago, it involved record company promoters giving cash, marijuana and other inducements to disc jockeys so they would add a new song to their playlist. The courts always found the disc jockey at fault.

Then in 1973, the courts began to go after the record companies. This caused the record companies to seek a middleman – independent promoters. Independent promoters helped record companies get songs added to the playlist so record companies did not have to deal with radio stations directly.

Some independent promoters gave large amounts of cash, harder drugs …

The Changing Role Of The Physician As A Consequence Of The "Gag Clause" In Managed Health Care Contracts, Emily Riley May 1997

The Changing Role Of The Physician As A Consequence Of The "Gag Clause" In Managed Health Care Contracts, Emily Riley

Theses and Dissertations

In November 1995, at a meeting of the Managed Health Care Congress, Harvard Medical School professor and physician Dr. David Himmelstein, delivered a presentation that included a slide of what he called the "gag clause" in his U.S. Healthcare contract. Dr. Himmelstein explained that he was being restricted in what he could say to his patients - three days later, U.S. Healthcare terminated his contract.

This event, coupled with Dr. Himmelstein's appearance two weeks later on the Donahue Show, sparked a flood of media attention and, in turn, a public outcry. Managed health care, designed to regulate and curtail growing …

Reflections On A Third Grade Social Studies Curriculum, Laura E. Gerrity

Graduate Student Independent Studies

This curriculum study is a narrative account of a teacher and the social studies curriculum she uses with her third grade class. The curriculum is divided into two main parts. One is a study of the students' culture and family history which involves interviews with the children's parents, an examination of maps and literature from those cultures, and a description of the way the students experience the study through their writings, drawings, and conversation.

The second part of the study is an investigation of the students' neighborhood and community. Through interviews with community members, neighborhood walks, and their own observations, …

Hermeneutical Approaches To The Isaiah Apocalypse: An Examination Of Form- And Redaction-Critical Interpretive Principles And Foundations For A New Study Of Isaiah 24-27, William Carr Jr May 1997

Hermeneutical Approaches To The Isaiah Apocalypse: An Examination Of Form- And Redaction-Critical Interpretive Principles And Foundations For A New Study Of Isaiah 24-27, William Carr Jr

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

This thesis is an exercise in detecting these underlying hermeneutical principles in the secondary literature as they have been applied to Isaiah 24-27, in relation to the three areas of investigation mentioned above: literary coherence (unity), date, and genre. Of primary interest are works produced since Anderson's watershed essay; however, since itis presupposed that the more recent researchers have relied considerably on an earlier scholarly tradition, it will be necessary to trace present principles to previous principals, especially of Isaiah studies, Bernhard Duhm, and of form criticism, Hermann Gunkel.

Attachment, Identity Development, And Sexual Behavior Among College Students, Diana D. Coyl May 1997

Attachment, Identity Development, And Sexual Behavior Among College Students, Diana D. Coyl

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The prevalence of nonmarital sexual behavior among adolescents continues to rise, as does the number of sexually transmitted diseases, AIDS, and unwanted pregnancies. College-age adolescents appear to be even more susceptible to these problems. Sound theoretical knowledge would seem useful in designing more effective prevention programs. The purpose of this study was to identity theoretical factors that contribute to or decrease such behaviors.

Two hundred fifty-two single college students completed measures designed to examine relations among identity development, attachment patterns, gender, and sexual behavior in older adolescents. Attachment and identity measures were used to explore variations in sexual behavior relating …

Loss And Grief Measurement Tool For Battered Women, Sherrie A. Eisele Apr 1997

Loss And Grief Measurement Tool For Battered Women, Sherrie A. Eisele

Theses and Graduate Projects

Research has focused on battered women's safety needs which are supportive of women leaving their abusive partners. Despite the established intervention techniques and the availability of concrete support services, a high percentage of women will remain in or return to violent homes. A gap in research surrounds the emotional attachments and the lack of intrapersonal support for battered women, which would provide them with a process to heal from the abuse. Through an exploratory method, this study designed an easy-to-use measurement tool to assess the loss and grief battered women experience. Qualitative interviews were conducted of practitioners in the design …

New Jersey Radium Dial Workers And The Dynamics Of Occupational Disease Litigation In The Early Twentieth Century, The, Kenneth A. Deville, Mark E. Steiner Apr 1997

New Jersey Radium Dial Workers And The Dynamics Of Occupational Disease Litigation In The Early Twentieth Century, The, Kenneth A. Deville, Mark E. Steiner

Missouri Law Review

Between 1917 and 1923 over 800 women worked for the United States Radium Corporation ("USRC") in Orange, New Jersey handpainting wrist-watch faces with a substance made luminescent by radioactive materials. While these workers were exposed to injurious, even mortal, levels of radiation, less than a dozen received any compensation for their injuries. These features compounded the workers' legal problems once they entered the formal legal system by dramatically complicating attempts to prove causation, by raising the specter of the statute of limitations defense, and by playing a major role in the settlement negotiation process. As a consequence, even when some …

Review Of The Ojibwa Of Western Canada, 1780-1870 By Laura Peers, Edward J. Hedican Apr 1997

Review Of The Ojibwa Of Western Canada, 1780-1870 By Laura Peers, Edward J. Hedican

Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)

This innovative work is an ethno-historical study of the Ojibwa migration from the Great Lakes region to the Plains. Building on earlier studies by Harold Hickerson (The Chippewa and Their Neighbors) and Charles Bishop (The Northern Ojibwa and the Fur Trade), particularly in the use of the Hudson's Bay Company Archives, Peers reconstructs processes of historical change over a ninety year period. She is not content, however, simply to document the historical record, but instead takes on a much broader challenge, and herein lies the major value of her study.

The Ojibwa of western Canada are …

African Architectural Transference To The South Carolina Low Country, 1700-1880, Fritz Hamer Apr 1997

African Architectural Transference To The South Carolina Low Country, 1700-1880, Fritz Hamer

Faculty and Staff Publications

There is growing historical and archaeological evidence that African style housing was an integral part of slave communities on plantations in the South Carolina Lowcountry. Besides the "shotgun" house, other African house forms were built in North America before descendants of African slaves became acculturated to western construction techniques. The rarity of historical and archaeological evidence of these structures can be attributed to the culture bias of early white observers and the poor preservation of these impermanent structures in the archaeological record.
