Informing Historical Research In Accounting And Management: Traditions, Philosophies, And Opportunities, Lee D. Parker
Informing Historical Research In Accounting And Management: Traditions, Philosophies, And Opportunities, Lee D. Parker
Accounting Historians Journal
Historical research in accounting and management, hitherto largely neglected as a field of inquiry by many management and accounting researchers, has experienced a resurgence of interest and activity in research conferences and journals over the past decade. The potential lessons of the past for contemporary issues have been rediscovered, but the way forward is littered with antiquarian narratives, methodologically naive analyses, ideologically driven interpretation and ignorance of the traditions, schools and philosophy of the craft by accounting and management researchers as well as traditional and critical historians themselves. This paper offers an introduction to contributions made to the philosophies and …

Guys And Dolls: Remedial Nurturing Skills In Post-Divorce Practice, Feminist Theory, And Family Law Doctrine, Barbara Stark
Guys And Dolls: Remedial Nurturing Skills In Post-Divorce Practice, Feminist Theory, And Family Law Doctrine, Barbara Stark
Hofstra Law Review
This Article addresses two pressing problems in contemporary family law and demonstrates the usefulness of feminist theory in analyzing both The first problem is the practical, specific problem of post-divorce nurturing of children; that is, why post-divorce nurturing is so often difficult for custodial and visiting parents, as well as their children. The second is a more theoretical, pervasive problem of doctrinal reform; that is, the persistence of gendered stereotypes in family law notwithstanding doctrinal reforms intended to eradicate them. The first problem provides a concrete context in which to clarify and analyze the second. It is a particularly apt …

Britain And The French Resistance 1940-1942 : A False Start, Laurie West Van Hook
Britain And The French Resistance 1940-1942 : A False Start, Laurie West Van Hook
Master's Theses
During the Second World War, the French Resistance failed to unify or work effectively with Charles de Gaulle, the movement's symbolic leader. The Resistance maintained a troublesome relations with Great Britain. Neither side overcame a series of conflicts, battling egos, and internal confusion. As a result, Britain and the Resistance never developed a mature relationship that could aid the Allied invasion of French North Africa in November 1942 (Torch) and Normandy in June 1955 (Overlord). The British lacked a unified policy toward the French Resistance. Acting out a sense of desperation and isolation, the British clung …

Turning Pro: Reflections On The Career Of J. Franklin Jameson, Peter J. Wosh
Turning Pro: Reflections On The Career Of J. Franklin Jameson, Peter J. Wosh
Provenance, Journal of the Society of Georgia Archivists
Over the past two decades archivists have moved to define and codify their own separate and distinct profession, inventing a new language, developing a more intensive and expansive training regimen, and constructing a unique theoretical base. Such efforts may have helped archivists to distinguish themselves more clearly from other disciplines, but this new professional orientation has also produced conflicts with former friends and allies over issues such as governmental policies concerning electronic mail, funding priorities for the National Historical Publications and Records Commission, and Freedom of Information Act requests. The historical profession, too, has undergone significant changes as shifting research …
Review Of Caddo Indians: Where We Come From By Cecile Elkins Carter, F. Todd Smith
Review Of Caddo Indians: Where We Come From By Cecile Elkins Carter, F. Todd Smith
Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)
Unlike the Native American tribes of the northern Plains-especially the Teton Sioux-the Indians of the southern Plains have been relatively neglected by historians. This is partially the result of these tribes' long, extensive dealings with the Spanish and French before interacting with representatives of the United States in the mid-nineteenth century. The nomadic buffalo hunting Comanches and Kiowas have had their share of chroniclers, due in part to the dramatic wars they fought in response to their being forced onto reservations following the Civil War. Only recently, however, has a historian, Stanley Noyes, written exclusively about the Comanches before 1845. …

Nature And The Divine: Classical Greek Philosophy And The Political In The Thought Of Leo Strauss And Eric Voegelin., Todd Eric Myers
Nature And The Divine: Classical Greek Philosophy And The Political In The Thought Of Leo Strauss And Eric Voegelin., Todd Eric Myers
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
The following work is an attempt to clarify the relationship of two of the most significant political thinkers of the later part of the twentieth century. Previous scholarship on the relationship between Leo Strauss and Eric Voegelin has focused on the two men's different interpretations of the religious traditions of Judaism and Christianity. In this work, we explore the two men's presentations of classical Greek philosophy to illuminate how their differing readings of the classics come to similar conclusions regarding the nature and limits of the political. Our investigation probes how Strauss's treatment of philosophy as being slightly more comic …

The end of the Cold War brought with it a temporary euphoria about prospects for a worldwide "third wave" of democratization to sweep the globe. If civil society had triumphed in the former Soviet bloc, perhaps political liberalism would spread elsewhere. No sooner had the sweet taste of victory over communism subsided, however, than Western observers turned their attention to another, allegedly uniquely, antidemocratic current- Islam-whose civilizational values seem to clash with Western liberalism even more fundamentally than Marxism. Whereas people in other parts of the world crave civil society, so the argument goes, political openings in the Muslim world …

Baptist Ministerial Education In The United States, 1850-1950, Gregory A. Smith
Baptist Ministerial Education In The United States, 1850-1950, Gregory A. Smith
Faculty Publications and Presentations
Baptist ministerial education in America expanded and changed significantly between 1850 and 1950. This evolutionary process was the product of religious, educational, political, and other forces. Many Baptists of the period opposed ministerial education, believing that the proper qualification for ministry was a divine calling rather than any human achievement. The education of ministers was a major motivating factor in the founding of most Baptist colleges, but many other factors contributed as well. The ministry training curriculum was a matter of debate in various areas—not least the tension between academic and practical concerns. Major Baptist educational leaders of the period …
The International City Hypothesis: An Approach To The Recent History Of U.S. Cities, Carl Abbott
The International City Hypothesis: An Approach To The Recent History Of U.S. Cities, Carl Abbott
Urban Studies and Planning Faculty Publications and Presentations
Differentiates between the concepts of world cities and international cities, asserting that study of international cities offers greater opportunities for research and analysis of major urban regions of the latter 20th century. The world city model emphasizes hierarchy and status based on influence and power. The international city model emphasizes numerous indicators that demonstrate a broader range of international connections, including foreign tourists, new immigration, sister-city affiliations, and multinational corporation offices. They may function as production centers, gateway cities, or transactional cities. At present, statistical data are thin, and the topic invites research by urban historians.

An Ethnographic Study Of The Qualities And Characteristics Of Democratic Elementary Classrooms Which Motivate Students To Civically Participate, Kathryn M. Obenchain
Thesis, Dissertations, Student Creative Activity, and Scholarship
This study described two self-contained, upper elementary, democratic classrooms in order to determine if there were specific qualities and characteristics in these classrooms which would motivate students to be more participatory citizens. The two classrooms were ethnically and geographically diverse, one in Southern California and the other in the Midwest. The participating teachers expressed a commitment to citizenship education and it had been determined that democratic elements were present in their classrooms. The study was based in the theoretical frameworks of constructivism and interpretivism, and an ethnographic methodology was utilized to describe the classroom environment. Analyses of the data were …
The Counsel Group: Rhetorical And Political Contexts Of Court Counsel In "The Canterbury Tales"., Marc S. Guidry
The Counsel Group: Rhetorical And Political Contexts Of Court Counsel In "The Canterbury Tales"., Marc S. Guidry
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
The Counsel Group: Rhetorical and Political Contexts of Court Counsel in The Canterbury Tales argues that counsel-taking is one of the most important themes in Chaucer's masterwork. Court counsel--which includes giving the ruler or lord political advice, making laws and treaties, and passing judicial sentence--was a major form of medieval discourse that recurs throughout Ricardian poetry. Indeed, the modern principle of consultative government has its roots in the medieval discourse of counsel and consent. As a diplomat in the service of Richard II, member of parliament, and acquaintance of several leading members of the king's council, Chaucer was well positioned …

Among Women: Toni Morrison's Mothers, Sisters, And Daughters., Hazel Ruth Reames Caillouet
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
This work explores the relationships between and among women in the fiction of Toni Morrison. Morrison's mothers, sisters, and daughters cannot function without the love and support of a community of women. Those characters who abandon or reject this community become lost to their own world. Morrison women, thus, find themselves in and through other women. The first two chapters establish Morrison's characters in relation to those of other authors in order to show her unique sense of community. Comparing Morrison's work to Virginia Woolf's A Room of One's Own and her emphasis on individuality and isolation illustrates Morrison's dependence …
The Terminology Of Composition Studies: A Historical Approach., Kimberly Lynn Harrison
The Terminology Of Composition Studies: A Historical Approach., Kimberly Lynn Harrison
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Recently, composition scholars have shown interest in examining their own language. My study furthers this interest by providing a historical analysis of the terminology commonly used in composition studies. The historical focus allows an analysis of how our vocabulary has changed in relation to specific schools of thought in composition studies, thus encouraging an awareness of the influence of context--professional, institutional, cultural, and personal--on the scholarship in composition studies. Such influences, I argue, are often ignored to the detriment of our discipline. Chapter one further explains the scope and purpose of my study. Chapters two and three analyze in-depth two …
