Ephedrine: An Herbal Toxicological Hazard, Jeffrey Peeke Jan 1997

Ephedrine: An Herbal Toxicological Hazard, Jeffrey Peeke

Capstone Research Projects

Many individuals are currently using herbal products that are toxicologically unsafe due to inaccurate dosages and/or addition of harmful substances of which the consumer is unaware. This is primarily because the health supplement industry has failed to supply adequate research and regulation on its products. This paper makes a brief review of the general field of toxicology, but ultimately narrows its scope to an in-depth consideration of ephedrine, an ancient Chinese medicinal herb capable of concerted stimulation of the sympathetic nervous system. Ephedrine use has resulted in negative reactions in a number of cases.

Cysteine-to-alanine replacements in the Escherichia coli SoxR protein and the role of the [2Fe-2S] centers in transcriptional act. Nucleic Acids Research, 25(8), 1469-1475.The Escherichia coli soxRS regulon activates oxidative stress and antibiotic resistance genes in two transcriptional stages. SoxR protein becomes activated in cells exposed to excess superoxide or nitric oxide and then stimulates transcription of the soxS gene, whose product in turn activates ≥10 regulon promoters. Purified SoxR protein is a homodimer containing a pair of [2Fe-2S] centers essential for soxS transcription in …

College students with at least part-time work experience 129 (75 females and 54 males) completed the MBTI and a survey which asked participants to provide ratings of; (1) to which they would label various forms of workplace behavior as aggressive, and (2) the extent to which they have personally witnessed and exhibited various forms of workplace aggression. The results indicated that Men were less likely " indirect" workplace …

Does Decisonal Law Grant Whites Fewer Political Rights Under The Fourteenth Amendment Than It Grants To Racial Minorities: A Response To Vikram D. Amar And Evan H. Caminker, Thomas E. Wood

UC Law Constitutional Quarterly

In November 1996, the California electorate adoited Proposition 209 (Prop. 209), otherwise known as the California Civil Rights Initiative (CCRI), thereby eliminating all state and local programs that grant "preferential treatment' based on race, sex, color, ethnicity, and national origin in the operation of public employment, education, and contracting. Professors Vikramn D. Amar and Evan H. Caminker have argued in this journal that lower courts, at least, must find CCRI unconstitutional under Washington v. Seattle School District No. 1. This Article is a response to their arguments regarding the constitutionality of CCRI.

This Article begins by noting two crucial differences …

Glutamate dehydrogenase (GDH), an enzyme that is central to the metabolism of glutamate, is present at high levels in the mammalian brain. Studies on human leukocytes and rat brain suggested the presence of two GDH activities differing in thermal stability and allosteric regulation, but molecular biological investigations led to the cloning of two human GDH-specific genes encoding highly homologous polypeptides. The first gene, designated GLUD1, is expressed in all tissues (housekeeping GDH), whereas the second gene, designated GLUD2, is expressed specifically in neural and testicular tissues. In this study, we obtained both GDH isoenzymes in pure form by expressing a …
