Cardozo Law Review
The given facts require us to consider whether Harmonia's National Brotherhood and Sisterhood Youth Organisation Act (the "Act") and action taken under it infringe the requirement that all legislation in Harmonia must conform with constitutional standards of liberty, equality, solidarity, and tolerance. Since judicial review of primary legislation is not possible under the unwritten constitution of the United Kingdom, British legal experience has nothing to say on the main issues of constitutionality.
Tnt-Contaminated Soils Remediation For Volunteer Army Ammunitions Plant, Janice Tevonia Russell Horn
Tnt-Contaminated Soils Remediation For Volunteer Army Ammunitions Plant, Janice Tevonia Russell Horn
Masters Theses and Doctoral Dissertations
Many facilities involved in the production of munitions, or with a history of munitions production or storage, are faced with the remediation of residual explosives in soil, groundwater and process wastewater. This requirement has become particularly prevalent with the closing of many military installations across the country. The Volunteer Army Ammunition Plant (V AAP) is a 6,681 acre Government owned and contractor-operated facility for the production and storage of trinitrotoluene (TNT). Two (2) technologies were investigated for TNT (nitroaromatic explosive) contaminated soils remediation. The technologies are phytoremediation and thermal incineration. Phytoremediation is an in-site wetlands-type remediation which uses plants. Thermal …

A Southeastern Community's Knowledge, Attitudes, Intentions, And Beliefs Regarding The Role Of The Nurse Practitioner, Susan Robinson
Masters Theses and Doctoral Dissertations
The purpose of this quantitative descriptive study was to examine consumer knowledge, attitudes, intention, and beliefs about nurse practitioners(NPs ),to determine whether a relationship existed between knowledge, attitudes, intentions, and beliefs, and demographic variables of age, gender, ethnicity, education, degree, profession, type of insurance, :frequency of visits to a primary care provider in the past 12 months, and consumer exposure to nurse practitioners.A conceptual :framework combining Orem's self care deficit theory and Ajzen and Fishbein's theory of reasoned action. This framework was used to explain the relationship between knowledge, attitudes, intention, beliefs, and behavior and the nurse practitioner's role in intervening to affect change in that relationship.Subjects(n=202)from …

Effect Of Altitude On Short Term Memory, Cathy J. Bartholomew
Effect Of Altitude On Short Term Memory, Cathy J. Bartholomew
Theses and Dissertations
Previous work has documented that cognitive deficits were observed in subjects tested at high altitudes (15,000 ft to 25,000 ft). Controversy remains as to whether cognitive deficits are observed at altitudes below 15,000 ft. The present study focused on this controversy, looking at the effects of moderate altitudes, 12,500 ft and 15,000 ft, on short term memory and compared them to a control altitude of 2,000 ft. Subjects were 72 students and instructors from the Department of Aviation Sciences at the University of North Dakota. After a series of pretests, including the Vocabulary Subtest of the Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale-Revised, …
Children's Choice In An Elementary School Classroom: Ownership In The Making, Marci Miller Glessner
Children's Choice In An Elementary School Classroom: Ownership In The Making, Marci Miller Glessner
Theses and Dissertations
Current educational theory and practice emphasize the importance of children's ownership in the learning process. Ownership evolves from a combination of authentic classroom experiences and student-made choices. Providing students with choices in learning may appear to be a simple task; yet, many educators find it to be daunting. This qualitative study describes one elementary literacy environment and the perception of choice as experienced by the students and the classroom teacher.
The data for this study were collected from a sixth-grade classroom using a fourtiered approach including: classroom observations, student interviews, formal and informal teacher interviews, and the collection of classroom …

Paper Session Ii-D - Application Of Space-Age Technology Countries And Education, Rosendo Naranjo
Space Congress® Proceedings
Technology transfer and the multitude of benefits derived from space exploration is a prime factor in solving the problems of developing countries. The responsibility of developing countries in their own development process begins with a planning strategy and knowledge of the technology available to aid them in this process. The industrialized countries must understand the needs and goals of the developing countries and be ready to respond to their requests. This is a global responsibility to all mankind. The role of satellites in the development process is critical. Three categories of satellites - communications, meteorological, and earth resources - are …

Paper Session Ii-B - International Space Station Phase I Risk Mitigation Experimental Process Enhanced The Phase 2/3 Development, Carolynn Lee Conley
Space Congress® Proceedings
The International Space Station (ISS) Program initiated a Launch Package/Stage (LP/S) Phase 1 Program in late 1993. The Launch Package/Stage (LP/S) Phase 1 Program was developed to evaluate, in the space environment, certain hardware, software, operational procedures, and models directly relevant to the design and development of the ISS. The individual projects were selected based on several factors. One of the most important was the potential for reducing or eliminating identified potential risks associated with the assembly and EVA supported maintenance. Of addition importance was proving methods for monitoring crew health, confirming models used for the station design, and testing …

Paper Session Ii-C - Military Space: Global Change In The 21st Century, A. N. Sorensen Ph.D.
Space Congress® Proceedings
The observation of how rapidly the world is changing as a result of technological and economic pressure is to state the obvious. Predicting the present magnitude and rate of the change would have been impossible; projecting into the future will be an equally daunting task. Reflection upon the previous forty years of technological advancement is almost as hard to imagine as what the next forty years will bring in terms of technological products and capability. Yet, from an integrated business standpoint, it would be hard to envision a future with any major industrial business solely owned within any one national …

Paper Session Ii-B - The International Space Station: Background And Current Status, Daniel V. Jacobs
Space Congress® Proceedings
The International Space Station, as the largest international civil program in history, features unprecedented technical, cost, scheduling, managerial, and international complexity. A number of major milestones have been accomplished to date, including the construction of major elements of flight hardware, the development of operations and sustaining engineering centers, astronaut training, and several Space Shuttle/Mir docking missions. Negotiations with all International Parters on initial terms and conditions and Memoranda of Understanding (MOU) have been largely completed, and discussions on bartering arrangements for services and new hardware are ongoing. When the International Space Station is successfully completed, it will pave the way …

Paper Session Ii-C - Leo To Luna: Gathering New Information For The Establishment Of A Permanent Presence In Space, Marylin K. Sheddan
Space Congress® Proceedings
What, exactly, can we learn from currently anticipated missions to low earth orbit (LEO) that can be successfully extrapolated with regard to a permanent human presence on (in) the moon?
There are days when it seems appropriate to wonder if it is still acceptable to say “return to the moon” out loud. Nonetheless, there is a quiet movement toward a return to Lunar missions within the aerospace industry. Slowly, often without funding, regardless of public or sometimes even corporate support, engineers and technicians are diligently concentrating on the work which will make those missions possible. One example which comes to …

Anne Sexton's Poetic Quest For God, Heather Lee Lustig
Anne Sexton's Poetic Quest For God, Heather Lee Lustig
Theses & Honors Papers
Critics including Alicia Ostriker and Diana Hume George believe Anne Sexton's poetic quest for God to be a failure. Ostriker asserts that Sexton's pursuit of a loving God in whom she can have faith ends merely as "a heroic failure." Her statement echoes George's description of the "pathetic end of Anne Sexton's quest for the Father." These critics view Sexton's quest through the perspective of orthodox Christianity's patriarchal system. However, while sexton seeks a Father figure who will not oppress her but rather save her from self destruction, she redefines her "religion" and God to include women. She merges with …

Studying The Rural In Education: Nation-Building, "Globalization," And School Improvement, Craig B. Howley
Studying The Rural In Education: Nation-Building, "Globalization," And School Improvement, Craig B. Howley
Education Policy Analysis Archives (EPAA)
This essay maintains that nation-building, partly through systems of schooling, has served rather more to debase than improve the rural circumstance. It suggests that a different logic of improvement is needed in rural education, but refrains from prescriptions. Instead, it focuses its attention on the sort of questions that researchers (and school improvers, for that matter) might ask to discover or invent that logic variously. ...
