Paper Session Iii-B - Mars Global Surveyor: Cruising To Mars, Glenn E. Cunningham May 1997

Paper Session Iii-B - Mars Global Surveyor: Cruising To Mars, Glenn E. Cunningham

Space Congress® Proceedings

The Mars Global Surveyor spacecraft was launched on November 7, 1996, an is now cruising to Mars. While the launch was excellent, and the spacecraft and its science payload are in perfect operating condition, a broken deployment damper on one of the two solar arrays has posed some concern relative to the use of that solar array as a drag surface during aerobraking operations at Mars. This paper discusses the in-flight events thus far in the cruise portion of the Mars Global Surveyor mission, including those special events executed to characterize the performance of the partial deployed solar array. In …

Paper Session Iii-C - Tracking And Data Acquisition (T&Da) Support To Launch Vehicles By The Tracking And Data Relay Satellite System (Tdrss), Margery Bacon

Space Congress® Proceedings

The Tracking and Data Relay Satellite System (TDRSS) is the heart of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) Space Network. TDRSS is a space based system of geosynchronous satellites, managed by the Goddard Space Flight Center (GSFC) and includes the GSFC Network Control Center (NCC) and the White Sands Complex (WSC) in New Mexico, that together provide near continuous communications and tracking services to low earth orbiting spacecraft, launch vehicles, and various suborbital platforms.

With the addition of the Guam Remote Ground Terminal (GRGT) scheduled to be operational in July 1998, TDRSS will be capable of providing continuous global …

Paper Session Iii-B - Measurements Of Oxygen In Biological & Medical Experiments, Glenn M. Cohen Ph.D., Fredric M. Ham, David L. Grisell May 1997

Paper Session Iii-B - Measurements Of Oxygen In Biological & Medical Experiments, Glenn M. Cohen Ph.D., Fredric M. Ham, David L. Grisell

Space Congress® Proceedings

Since the maintenance of the appropriate levels of oxygen is essential for ensuring the success of many of the specialized experiments in space missions, such as tissue culture experiments, the continuous monitoring of partial pressures of oxygen provides important data. We are developing optical methods of monitoring not only oxygen but also many dissolved constituents in blood and tissue culture solutions. The optical system uses tiny optical fibers, which easily fit inside a fine-gauged needle, for monitoring each specimen. Moreover, the beam can be split so that multiple specimens can be monitored simultaneously. The same optical technology can also be …

Paper Session Iii-D - Physiological And Genetic Changes To E. Coli Induced By Exposure To Lead - A Two Year Study, Ashley M. Cimino May 1997

Paper Session Iii-D - Physiological And Genetic Changes To E. Coli Induced By Exposure To Lead - A Two Year Study, Ashley M. Cimino

Space Congress® Proceedings

It’s been proven that concentrations of lead severely harm people - primarily children. The purpose of this study is to determine whether or not continuous exposure to lead nitrate concentrations of 100 parts per billion (ppb), 200 ppb, or 300 ppb will produce mutation in Escherichia coli DNA over many generations. The hypothesis formulated was that, over time, continuous exposure to lead nitrate concentrations will produce a harmful mutation in Escherichia coli and reduce the amount of square centimeters of bacterial growth.

Lead is a bluish - gray element found underground that can be obtained by mining the ore. Pure …

Paper Session Iii-A - Commercialization Of Ksc Instrumentation Developed To Improve Safety, Reliability, And Cost Effectiveness Of Space Shuttle Processing, Launch, And Landing, William R. Helms, Stanley O. Starr May 1997

Paper Session Iii-A - Commercialization Of Ksc Instrumentation Developed To Improve Safety, Reliability, And Cost Effectiveness Of Space Shuttle Processing, Launch, And Landing, William R. Helms, Stanley O. Starr

Space Congress® Proceedings

The top priority at Kennedy Space Center (KSC) is safety of the flight crew and Shuttle vehicle. This priority is followed by safety of the personnel and physical assets of KSC, and reducing the costs associated with processing the Shuttle and other flight components, driven by budget and down sizing pressures. The KSC Instrumentation Laboratories, managed and staffed by both civil service NASA personnel and by I-NET, the Engineering Support Contractor, help ensure the accomplishment of these priorities by adapting or developing technologies to improve operational safety and decrease processing costs. The Laboratories are organized by technical discipline into nine …

Isolation Of A Cdna Encoding A Kex2-Like Endoprotease With Homology To Furin From The Nematode Caenorhabditis Elegans, Eduardo Gomez-Saladin, Anne E. Luebke, David L. Wilson, Ian M. Dickerson May 1997

Isolation Of A Cdna Encoding A Kex2-Like Endoprotease With Homology To Furin From The Nematode Caenorhabditis Elegans, Eduardo Gomez-Saladin, Anne E. Luebke, David L. Wilson, Ian M. Dickerson

Biology Articles and Papers

A cDNA was isolated from the nematode Caenorhabditis elegans that encodes an endoprotease which is a member of the Kex2 family of serine endoproteases. Degenerate oligonucleotide primers were designed based on conserved regions within the active sites of known Kex2-like endoproteases, and were used for reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) of poly(A)+RNA isolated from C. elegans. A PCR product was isolated that had homology to the active sites of known furin endoproteases, and was used as a probe to screen a C. elegans cDNA library. A Kex2-like endoprotease (CelfurPC) which encoded a 692-amino-acid preproendoprotease, was identified. The …

The Portrayal Of Enemies In Propaganda During The Russian And French Revolutions, Carole Reid May 1997

The Portrayal Of Enemies In Propaganda During The Russian And French Revolutions, Carole Reid

Senior Scholar Papers

This study investigates propaganda aimed at depicting "the enemy" during the Terror period of the French Revolution (1792-1794) and during the Revolutionary and Civil War periods in Russia (1917-1920). The two periods under consideration are congruous for several reasons. First, during each period the regime in control solidified its power and became more repressive in an effort to further its revolutionary agenda. Both the Jacobins and the Bolsheviks were minority groups who gained control of countries in transition, and each government believed that unity among the people was essential in order to lead their country forward. When the Jacobins gained …

Beyond The Threshold: Life In The New Russia, Amanda Sprang May 1997

Beyond The Threshold: Life In The New Russia, Amanda Sprang

Senior Scholar Papers

Amanda Sprang spent nine months, from September of 1995 to May of 1996, studying at Colby College's program in St. Petersburg, Russia. Through contacts made during previous trips to Russia in middle and high school, Amanda was able to quickly rekindle her old friendships and make new ones with many young Russians from different backgrounds. The following work is a collection of twelve essays about life in the New Russia. The essays are framed by a foreword and an epilogue that help place the entire work in a historical context. Although the theme of each essay emerges from a particular …
