Law Libraries And The Layperson: A Bibliography Of Self-Help Books, Kristen M. Mckeaney May 1997

Law Libraries And The Layperson: A Bibliography Of Self-Help Books, Kristen M. Mckeaney

Theses and Dissertations

Although the goal of a comprehensive legal library is to be a resource to professionals and the general public, the issue of providing legal assistance to laypersons via the library is a complex one. Compiling the legal resources to benefit the lay public is challenging. This paper attempts to systematically identify and suggest resources following pre-set criteria of affordability, content usefulness, timeliness and reasonableness of management.

The primary form of this paper is a bibliography following a subject specific format. The bibliography is further defined into sections of legal reference books, internet sites, legal directories, general references and agencies. The …

Signal Transduction Pathways In Volvox Carteri, Heide Girardin May 1997

Signal Transduction Pathways In Volvox Carteri, Heide Girardin

Honors Theses

The green alga Volvox carteri exhibits a virtual absence of protein synthesis in the dark, but begins synthesizing proteins necessary for growth and development almost immediately after exposure to the light. The regulation of protein synthesis in this system is known to be translational since extracts prepared in the dark have identical pools and quantities of mRNA as extracts prepared in the light (Kirk and Kirk, 1983). Exploration of the mechanism of translational regulation has led us to consider the importance of signal transduction pathways. By using a variety of commercially available drugs that affect specific components of known signaling …

Date Rape: Attitudes And Perceptions, Elizabeth Young May 1997

Date Rape: Attitudes And Perceptions, Elizabeth Young

Theses and Dissertations

The reasons date rape victims are often blamed for their own assault may be associated with sex-role identification and a lack of education. This study aims to examine the relationship between an individual's measure of sex-role traditionality and their attitudes towards rape by using the Bem Sex-Role Inventory combined with the Rape Attitudes and Perceptions Questionnaire which were administered to two mixed gender classes consisting of 30 juniors and seniors in a rural high school. Approximately one week after the surveys were taken, both classes watched When Romance Turns to Rape, which contains several vignettes on date rape. Then …

Journal Articles: Regenerative Medicine

Experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis (EAE) is an inflammatory autoimmune disease of the central nervous system which serves as a model for the human disease multiple sclerosis. We demonstrate here that encephalitogenic T cells, transduced with a retroviral gene, construct to express interleukin 4, and can delay the onset and reduce the severity of EAE when adoptively transferred to myelin basic protein-immunized mice. Thus, T lymphocytes transduced with retroviral vectors can deliver "regulatory cytokines" in a site-specific manner and may represent a viable therapeutic strategy for the treatment of autoimmune disease.

Self-Determination At A Homeless Youth Serving Agency, Matthew F. Halley May 1997

Self-Determination At A Homeless Youth Serving Agency, Matthew F. Halley

Theses and Graduate Projects

This study explored how staff of a drop-in center for homeless youth interacted with clients. Specifically, it examined the roles of paternalism and self-determination at the agency. In order to determine degrees of paternalism, fifteen subjects were asked to respond to four vignettes. The study results suggest that paternalism may be used as a tool for supporting clients. Classic justifications for paternalistic interventions were applied to the homeless youth population to argue that limiting self -determination was appropriate.
