An Interdisciplinary Approach To Family Law Jurisprudence: Application Of An Ecological And Therapeutic Perspective, Barbara A. Babb Jul 1997

An Interdisciplinary Approach To Family Law Jurisprudence: Application Of An Ecological And Therapeutic Perspective, Barbara A. Babb

All Faculty Scholarship

Traditionally, the legal system has attempted to fashion morality in determining family legal issues rather than to devise legal remedies that accommodate how families live. This approach must change, and a new approach based on legal realism that effectuates the well-being of families and children must be developed. This article proposes an interdisciplinary approach based on an ecological and therapeutic jurisprudential paradigm to resolve family legal proceedings. An ecological approach, emanating from the ecology of human development social science paradigm, is one in which family law decision-makers consider factors beyond their conceptions of the family. This approach urges decision-makers to …

Mirizzi Syndrome Type Ii: Is Laparoscopic Cholecystectomy Justified?, D C Desai, R D Smink Jul 1997

Mirizzi Syndrome Type Ii: Is Laparoscopic Cholecystectomy Justified?, D C Desai, R D Smink

Department of Surgery Faculty Papers

Mirizzi syndrome type II is an uncommon cause of obstructive jaundice caused by an inflammatory response to an impacted gallstone in Hartmann's pouch or the cystic duct with a resultant cholecystocholedochal fistula. Two cases of Mirizzi syndrome type II are presented. Clinically only one patient had jaundice and endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatogram (ERCP) established a preoperative diagnosis of Mirizzi syndrome. The other patient's diagnosis of Mirizzi syndrome was made intraoperatively. It is important to properly identify the anatomy at the time of surgery to avoid compromising the common bile duct. Operative treatment of Mirizzi syndrome type II includes laparoscopic or open …

Can Sociological Research Be Qualitative, Critical And Valid?, David Wainwright Jul 1997

Can Sociological Research Be Qualitative, Critical And Valid?, David Wainwright

The Qualitative Report

Qualitative Research is enjoying a new found respectability in medical sociology, derived in part from an increasing willingness to submit to positivist criteria of reliability and validity. Whilst such claims to 'scientific' credibility have raised the status of the approach, this has only been achieved by driving a wedge between ethnographic methods of data-collection and their origins in the phenomenological strands of sociological thought. One consequence of this schism has been to rob qualitative research of its critical potential, transforming it from a means of challenging discursive formations into a mechanism of surveillance. This paper defines the broad contours of …

The …

Characterization Of The Fast Axonally Transported Proteins In The Rat Optic Pathway, Surafel Mulugeta Jul 1997

Characterization Of The Fast Axonally Transported Proteins In The Rat Optic Pathway, Surafel Mulugeta

Theses and Dissertations in Biomedical Sciences

The fast axonally transported proteins represent a subset of neuronal proteins that are conveyed anterogradely as secretory vesicle constituents from the perikarya. Although fast transport displays properties consistent with the general secretory pathway, neuronal structure presents special problems which may require modifications of the general pathway. The elucidation of these special modifications is essential for a more complete understanding of neuronal function both in normal and pathological conditions. In order to characterize the fast transported (FT) proteins and to better understand fast transport trafficking, the FT of radiolabeled retinal ganglion cell (RGC) proteins in the adult rat optic pathway was …

Beef Quality Assurance Notes, Clell Bagley

Most of us have felt that injections given to a calf early in its life would be of little problem by the time it went to slaughter. We were WRONG!!! Colorado State University has provided the data and the pictures to prove it. In fact, 90% of the lesions found at slaughter originated during the cow-calf, stocker or early feeding periods. And, injections given while the calf is young caused greater lesions than those given when it was older. The study followed calves injected at branding or weaning and found a high incidence of lesions and blemishes when they went …

Disease Resistance In Cattle, Clell Bagley

All Current Publications

The ability of cattle to resist the many disease processes to which they are exposed is truly amazing. And yet, when several adverse factors combine, this resistance can be overcome and result in a herd disaster which is just as amazing. This discussion will be broken down into four major areas. But it is the combined functioning of all four areas that actually provides disease resistance.

The Demystification Of Legal Discourse: Reconceiving The Role Of The Poverty Lawyer As Agent Of The Poor, Cherie Robertson Jul 1997

The Demystification Of Legal Discourse: Reconceiving The Role Of The Poverty Lawyer As Agent Of The Poor, Cherie Robertson

Osgoode Hall Law Journal

By employing traditional methods of legal representation when acting on behalf of those living in poverty, lawyers act to perpetuate the disempowerment of poor people.. While the systemic barriers confronting the poor must be addressed, so too must the power of the poor to help themselves through organization and resistance. The task of the poverty lawyer committed to facilitating the agency of the poor is made difficult by the exclusivity and formalism of legal discourse, the constraints of the Rules of Professional Conduct, and by traditional understandings of the appropriate role of lawyers. However, a reconceptualization of the role of …

The Legal Advocate And The Questionably Competent Client In The Context Of A Poverty Law Clinic, Diana A. Romano

Osgoode Hall Law Journal

Advocates representing the poor must, above all, take into account the extreme vulnerability of their clients. This challenge is heightened where one suspects that a client may lack the capacity to provide appropriate instructions. This article considers the issue of how competency should be defined and the options available where incompetency is determined. Ultimately, advocacy must include personal empowerment as well as legal representation.
