The Perils Of Poverty: Prostitutes' Rights, Police Misconduct, And Poverty Law, Ray Kuszelewski, Dianne L. Martin Jul 1997

The Perils Of Poverty: Prostitutes' Rights, Police Misconduct, And Poverty Law, Ray Kuszelewski, Dianne L. Martin

Osgoode Hall Law Journal

This article is divided in two parts. In Part I, Ray Kuszelewski details the history of setbacks in representing street prostitutes faced by community-based initiatives at Parkdale Community Legal Services (PCLS). It is a personal, anecdotal, account of the clinic's evolutionary role in tackling the perils of poverty for street prostitutes. In Part II, Dianne Martin complements the first section by addressing the specific problem of police misconduct. The commentary is historical and theoretical in examining prior efforts at reform and argues for the development of a new, collaborative approach. The context is local and particularized in a community legal …

Clinics In A Cold Climate: Community Law Centres In England And Wales, Roger Smith Jul 1997

Clinics In A Cold Climate: Community Law Centres In England And Wales, Roger Smith

Osgoode Hall Law Journal

Legal aid clinics in England and Wales, known as law centres, have struggled since they were set up in the early 1970s. They overcame the initial protests of the private profession, which saw the centres as competition, and established an important presence in social welfare law during the 1970s and 1980s. In 1986, the government began implementing financial cuts to the system. Over the next decade, the increased cuts led to a race towards "contract culture" and the introduction of "franchising" within the legal aid system. The implications of fiscal restraint on the efficiency and the quality of the service …

Gender, Race, And Court Location Effects On Exceptional Sentencing In The State Of Washington, Catherine L. Drezak Jul 1997

Gender, Race, And Court Location Effects On Exceptional Sentencing In The State Of Washington, Catherine L. Drezak

Sociology & Criminal Justice Theses & Dissertations

Policy statements by the Sentencing Commission for the State of Washington emphasize that gender, race, and community ties are irrelevant to sentencing decisions. Based on prior sentencing practices, these policies carry the potential to incorporate unrecognized sentencing disparity practices into the proposed sentencing equality solution. Using Washington's sentencing data under current sentencing guideline structures, this research examined the sentencing outcomes with respect to sentences given outside the guidelines. This study was designed to address the research questions: What effect, if any, does gender have on exceptional sentence outcome? To what extent, if any, is race a factor in determining gender …

The Father Machine, Anthony Winslow Enns Jul 1997

The Father Machine, Anthony Winslow Enns

English Theses & Dissertations

Concerning his film Satyricon, Federico Fellini once said that the pre-Christian world would be so alien to contemporary society that it would resemble a work of science fiction. I have tried to take a similar approach in relation to the division of mind and body which has been the basis of western culture since Descartes. In this novel, I have attempted to present a world without such a division, a world where thoughts are used to power generators, where bodies possess the memory of their own suffering and where souls are capable of being stored and eaten. By blurring the …

A Comparison Of Factors Associated With Referrals, Service Placements And Length Of Service For African-American And Caucasian Youth With Serious Emotional And Behavioral Disturbances Served Through The Comprehensive Services Act In Virginia, Vanessa B. Sheppard

Health Services Research Dissertations

Despite the efficacy of community-based treatment, many emotionally and behaviorally disturbed youth still receive restrictive service placements. This is quite problematic for minority youth since studies have reported they are more at risk of out-of-home placements. The purpose of this study was to examine differences in referrals, out-of-home placements, residential placements and length of service for African-American and Caucasian youth. This historical cohort study was a secondary analysis of data from the Comprehensive Services Act in Virginia. The sample consisted of 2,883 youth ages 10-19. Multiple logistic regression was employed for data with dichotomous outcomes in order to adjust for …

Clinical Trials With Copper Supplementation, Clell Bagley, Norris Stenquist, Dennis Worwood Jul 1997

Clinical Trials With Copper Supplementation, Clell Bagley, Norris Stenquist, Dennis Worwood

All Current Publications

Copper deficiency has been diagnosed in beef cattle herds in many areas of the intermountain west. Copper supplements are not widely used, even though several products are available. It is difficult to correct a deficiency because too much copper can result in copper toxicity or poisoning. Toxicity is less a hazard with cattle than with sheep, but it is still a problem to guard against. Periodic monitoring of the herd’s copper status is essential for proper supplementation.

Modifying The Standard Of Judicial Review Of Labor Arbitration Awards: A Comparison To Administrative Review Hearings - Osram Sylvania, Inc. V. Teamsters Local Union No. 528, Elizabeth Tenorio

Journal of Dispute Resolution

Since their inception during the post-war years, collective bargaining agreements have been the primary method used by unions to get employers to deal with issues of importance to their labor force. However, the past few decades have seen a rapid decline in union membership as well as union effectiveness. 3 This casenote will look at whether or not the instant decision, Zcon, will be a contributing factor in the continuing downward spiral for unions.

Recent Developments: The Uniform Arbitration Act, Patrick Fanning, Diana; Farr, Matthew S. Mcbride, Jared Wayne

Journal of Dispute Resolution

This Article is an overview of recent court decisions that interpret state versions of the Uniform Arbitration Act ("U.A.A."). Arbitration statutes patterned after the U.A.A. have been adopted by thirty-four states and the District of Columbia. The goal of this project is to promote uniformity in the interpretation of the U.A.A. by analyzing the various underlying policies and rationales of recent court decisions interpreting the U.A.A.

Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation Of The Prefrontal Cortex Delays Contralateral Endogenous Saccades, Tony Ro, Avishai Henik, Liana Machado, Robert D. Rafal Jul 1997

Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation Of The Prefrontal Cortex Delays Contralateral Endogenous Saccades, Tony Ro, Avishai Henik, Liana Machado, Robert D. Rafal

Publications and Research

The contributions of the superior prefrontal cortex (SPFC) and the superior parietal lobule (SPL) in generating voluntary endogenous and reflexive visually guided saccades were investigated using transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS). Subjects made choice saccades to the left or right visual field in response to a central arrowhead (endogenous go signal) or a peripheral asterisk (exogenous go signal) that were presented along with a single TMS pulse at varying temporal intervals. TMS over the SPFC increased latencies for saccades made in response to an endogenous go signal toward the contralateral hemifield. No effects were observed when the go signal was exogenous …

Analysis Of Enhancer Function Of The Hs-40 Core Sequence Of The Human Alpha-Globin Cluster, Hsiaoli Chen, Christopher H. Lowrey, George Stamatoyannopoulos Jul 1997

Analysis Of Enhancer Function Of The Hs-40 Core Sequence Of The Human Alpha-Globin Cluster, Hsiaoli Chen, Christopher H. Lowrey, George Stamatoyannopoulos

Dartmouth Scholarship

HS-40 is the major regulatory element of the human α-globin locus, located 40 kb upstream of the ζ-globin gene. To test for potential interactions between HS-40 and the β- or the γ-globin gene promoters in stable transfection assays, the HS-40 core sequence was cloned upstream of either the β promoter or the γ promoter driving the neomycin phosphotransferase gene and enhancer activity was measured using a colony assay. In K562 or in MEL cells, enhancer activity of HS-40 was higher than that of the individual core sequences of the DNase I hypersensitive sites (HS) of the β-globin locus control region …

The subjects are part of a larger longitudinal study being completed within Portland State University's Speech and Hearing Sciences Program. All of the subjects participated in two in-home assessment sessions, which were approximately 2 hours long. …

Head Direction Cells And Episodic Spatial Information In Rats Without A Hippocampus, Edward J. Golob, Jeffrey S. Taube Jul 1997

Head Direction Cells And Episodic Spatial Information In Rats Without A Hippocampus, Edward J. Golob, Jeffrey S. Taube

Dartmouth Scholarship

To successfully navigate through the environment animals rely on information concerning their directional heading and location. Many cells within the postsubiculum and anterior thalamus discharge as a function of the animal’s head direction (HD), while many cells in the hippocampus discharge in relation to the animal’s location. We placed lesions in the hippocampus and recorded from HD cells in the postsubiculum and anterior thalamus. Lesions of the hippocampus did not disrupt the HD cell signal in either brain area, indicating that the HD cell signal must be generated by structures external to the hippocampus. In addition, each cell’s preferred firing …

Hedonic Analysis Of Psu Faculty Salaries, Tim O'Brien, Matt Ransom, Ellery Reed, Tim Schindler, Kay Woodford, James G. Strathman Jul 1997

Hedonic Analysis Of Psu Faculty Salaries, Tim O'Brien, Matt Ransom, Ellery Reed, Tim Schindler, Kay Woodford, James G. Strathman

Center for Urban Studies Publications and Reports

The complex issue of faculty compensation has vital importance within the academic labor market. Salaries reflect institutional, interpersonal, organizational and labor market forces. Designing productive and equitable faculty salary structures is one of the most contentious challenges that American higher education institutions face (Bowen, 1986).

Increasingly, salary scales have been more responsive to market conditions, which has widened the salary disparities among academic disciplines within the university labor market. Upward pressure on the salary scales in some disciplines has been countered by a downward pull in others (Scott and Bereman, 1992). As a consequence, analyzing academic salary structure can generate …

Mycotoxins, Clell Bagley Jul 1997

Mycotoxins, Clell Bagley

All Current Publications

Certain metabolites of some fungi (molds) are poisonous (toxic). Fungal poisons have been known for many years, but they were not considered a major factor in animal disease until fairly recently. Because the prefix myco- refers to fungi, these toxins are termed mycotoxins. Penicillin is derived from a fungus and could be termed a mycotoxin, in relation to bacteria which are sensitive to it.

Pinkeye, Clell Bagley Jul 1997

Pinkeye, Clell Bagley

All Current Publications

Pinkeye is the common term for Infectious Bovine Keratoconjunctivitis (IBK). This terminology describes a disease condition of cattle which is infectious in nature and causes an inflammation of the transparent cornea, the sclera (“white”) of the eyeball and the conjunctiva (inside lining membrane) of the lids.

Staph Mastitis: Herd Control Program, Clell Bagley Jul 1997

Staph Mastitis: Herd Control Program, Clell Bagley

All Current Publications

Mastitis caused by Staphylococcus aureus is a major problem for some dairy herds. It causes high Somatic Cell Counts (SCC), reduces milk quality, and may cause a loss of milk market. It limits milk production for the herd, reduces efficiency, and continues to spread to other cows.

Improving Reproductive Performance Of The Ewe, Clell Bagley Jul 1997

Improving Reproductive Performance Of The Ewe, Clell Bagley

All Current Publications

The western range ewe is a tremendously productive animal as evidenced by the excellent reproductive rates that are achieved by some producers, some years. Yet many other factors such as weather, disease and forage availability can drastically reduce their productivity. It is a major management challenge to control or even minimize the effect of these interacting factors. Some of those of greatest priority are listed and briefly discussed.

Udder Diseases Of Sheep, Clell Bagley Jul 1997

Udder Diseases Of Sheep, Clell Bagley

All Current Publications

There are two major udder disease problems of ewes, hardbag and bluebag. They both tend to occur sporadically and are frustrating for producers to treat or prevent.

Copper Deficiency In Utah, Clell Bagley, Norris Stenquist, Dennis Worwood Jul 1997

Copper Deficiency In Utah, Clell Bagley, Norris Stenquist, Dennis Worwood

All Current Publications

Copper deficiency has been diagnosed in a number of Utah cattle herds, yet few producers use copper supplements. Cattle deficient in the element can suffer significant production losses. Producers need to balance both the effects and the costs of copper supplements. Too much copper can cause copper toxicity or poisoning. And adding copper may not be economical if animals are only marginally deficient. Further, the deficiency may occur only on specific feeds or pastures, correcting itself when cattle are moved.

Controlling Internal Parasites In Utah Cattle, Clell Bagley Jul 1997

Controlling Internal Parasites In Utah Cattle, Clell Bagley

All Current Publications

Most cattle harbor some internal parasites (worms) and Utah cattle are no exception. The varied geographic and climatic conditions of Utah allow for tremendous variation in the parasite burden of different cattle herds. The numbers of parasites varies from very few to so numerous as to cause severe weakness and even death of cattle.

Management For Weaning Healthy, Marketable Calves, Clell Bagley

All Current Publications

Weaning is an extremely stressful time for beef calves and involves the potential for severe economic loss. The most common problems usually involve respiratory and/or digestive diseases. Weaned calves should be retained for 3–6 weeks after weaning.

Dystocia (Difficult Lambing), Clell Bagley Jul 1997

Dystocia (Difficult Lambing), Clell Bagley

All Current Publications

If the flock is lambed on the range, assistance is not given to individual ewes. Catching those needing help causes so much disruption of ewes with normal lambs and results in so many orphans, it is detrimental. One of the primary advantages of shed lambing a range flock is being able to better assist during birth and those first crucial hours of life.

The CON group did not participate in any physical activity. The subjects were asked not …

Impact Of Attachment Style On Disclosure Of Traumatic Events, Jo-Anne Leslie Mcdonald Jul 1997

Impact Of Attachment Style On Disclosure Of Traumatic Events, Jo-Anne Leslie Mcdonald

Psychology Theses & Dissertations

Researchers have suggested that differences occur among attachment styles in willingness to self-disclose to a relationship partner. The present study investigated relationships between a four-category model of attachment, the actual disclosure of a traumatic event, and the reasons for and against disclosure. Participants in the survey were 268 female college student volunteers. In this self-report study, attachment group members were compared on 15 subscales, focusing on categories of reasons for and against disclosure. Differences in actual disclosure among attachment groups were not found. However, significant differences were observed between groups in reasons for and against disclosure on the following subscales: …
