The Pastoral Evangelism Of Charles Grandison Finney As A Model For Contemporary Pastoral Evangelists, Daniel B. Forshee Oct 1997

The Pastoral Evangelism Of Charles Grandison Finney As A Model For Contemporary Pastoral Evangelists, Daniel B. Forshee

Journal of the American Society for Church Growth

The church today needs pastoral evangelists who will lead their congregations in evangelistic activity. Areas “where the gospel has never been heard” desperately need pastoral evangelists to penetrate their mission fields with the salvific message of Christ. If there were no more additions to the world’s population, it would take four thousand years “to evangelize the world through current soul-winning efforts.” Also, pastoral evangelists are needed in the United States. Church growth is not matching population increases. Church membership in the United States increased 28 percent from 1960 to 1990 while the total population increased 39 percent.

The Use Of Spectrofluorimetry And Capillary Electrophoresis/Laser-Induced Fluorescence For The Detection Of Fluorescent Dyes In Groundwater Migration Studies, Patrick Ferguson

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

This thesis involves work that was accomplished during a two-year internship at the Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA), Environmental Chemistry Branch. The research is an application of trace level determination of fluorescein dyes used as groundwater tracers. The work was performed to determine whether groundwater could migrate from a Resource Conservation Recovery Act (RCRA) site to an adjacent Superfund site. The research involved using Spectrofluorimetry and a new technique called capillary electrophoresis/laser induced fluorescence (CE/LIF) to determine tracer dyes that were injected at the RCRA site and monitored at the Superfund site. Results from Spectrofluorimetry were compared to those of CE/LIF. …

Indian Tribes And The Legal System, Ralph W. Johnson Oct 1997

Indian Tribes And The Legal System, Ralph W. Johnson

Washington Law Review

This article surveys the past and present role of lawyers in the field of Indian law, from the absence of attorneys in early treaty negotiations through the formative role lawyers played in developing the federal trust relationship, to their modem role as "legal warriors" for the increasingly independent, autonomous tribes of today. To understand all the changes now occurring in Indian law, a review of the background is helpful. What follows is a synopsis of the significant events in Indian history, focusing on how the U.S. government initially treated Indians and the role the legal profession played in this treatment.

The Role Of Bilateralism In Fulfilling The Federal-Tribal Relationship: The Tribal Rights-Endangered Species Secretarial Order, Charles Wilkinson

Washington Law Review

On June 5, 1997, Secretary of the Interior Bruce Babbitt and Secretary of Commerce William Daley signed a jointly-released Secretarial Order entitled "American Indian Tribal Rights, Federal-Tribal Trust Responsibilities, and the Endangered Species Act"' The Order culminated a year-and-a-half of work by tribes and federal officials to craft an administrative system for resolving difficult questions involving tribal rights and the Endangered Species Act (ESA). The Order is important for the ESA's implementation. It also carries broader significance, for it serves as one major example of how the government-to-government relationship between the United States and Indian tribes can be successfully implemented.

Mapping Antibiotic-Resistant Neisseria Gonorrhoeae Isoaltes In Metropolitan Toronto: Issues Of Scale, Positional Accuracy And Confidentiality, Jody F. Decker, Bob Sharpe, Jo-Anne Dillon

Geography and Environmental Studies Faculty Publications

The primary objective of this paper was to investigate the methodological implications of mapping Neisseria gonorrhoeae using the partial three-digit postal code instead of the complete six-digit postal code. The reporting locations of N gonorrhoeae isolates submitted from hospitals, doctor’s offices, private and provincial laboratories, and sexually transmitted disease (STD) clinics were used as a model. Specifically, the paper focused on variations in geographical distributions of STD data when mapped at different aggregations of postal code data and at different map scales. Such variations are of importance to those who analyze the spaital epidemiology of STDs, and the accessibility and …

Expression Of Smooth Muscle Myosin Heavy Chains And Unloaded Shortening In Single Smooth Muscle Cells, Daniel P. Meer, Thomas J. Eddinger Oct 1997

Expression Of Smooth Muscle Myosin Heavy Chains And Unloaded Shortening In Single Smooth Muscle Cells, Daniel P. Meer, Thomas J. Eddinger

Biological Sciences Faculty Research and Publications

The functional significance of the variable expression of the smooth muscle myosin heavy chain (SM-MHC) tail isoforms, SM1 and SM2, was examined at the mRNA level (which correlates with the protein level) in individual permeabilized rabbit arterial smooth muscle cells (SMCs). The length of untethered single permeabilized SMCs was monitored during unloaded shortening in response to increased Ca2+ (pCa 6.0), histamine (1 μM), and phenylephrine (1 μM). Subsequent to contraction, the relative expression of SM1 and SM2 mRNAs from the same individual SMCs was determined by reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction amplification and densitometric analysis. Correlational analyses between the SM2-to-SM1 …

The Effects Of Nutrition Package Claims, Nutrition Facts Panels, And Motivation To Process Nutrition Information On Consumer Product Evaluations, Scott B. Keller, Mike Landry, Jeanne Olson, Anne M. Velliquette, Scot Burton, J. Craig Andrews Oct 1997

The Effects Of Nutrition Package Claims, Nutrition Facts Panels, And Motivation To Process Nutrition Information On Consumer Product Evaluations, Scott B. Keller, Mike Landry, Jeanne Olson, Anne M. Velliquette, Scot Burton, J. Craig Andrews

Marketing Faculty Research and Publications

In a laboratory experiment using a between-subjects design, the authors examine the effects on nutrition and product evaluations of nutrition claims made (e.g., "99% fat free; " "low in calories") on a product package, product nutrition value levels, and enduring motivation to process nutrition information. Enduring motivation is shown to moderate the effects of product nutrition value on consumer evaluations. Also, nutrition claims interact with product nutrition value in affecting consumer perceptions of manufacturer credibility. Given the availability of nutrient levels in the Nutrition Facts panel on the back of the mock package, nutrition claims on the front of the …

Reading And Metaphonological Outcomes In Late Talkers, Rhea Paul, Candace Murray, Kathleen Clancy, David Andrews Oct 1997

Reading And Metaphonological Outcomes In Late Talkers, Rhea Paul, Candace Murray, Kathleen Clancy, David Andrews

Communication Disorders Faculty Publications

Children with a history of slow expressive language development (SELD) were followed to second grade, at which point outcomes in terms of speech, language, cognitive skills, reading achievement, and metaphonological performance were evaluated. Although there were some statistically significant differences between groups, children with a history of SELD generally performed within the normal range on the measures collected. Relations among speech, reading, and metaphonology in the SELD cohort appeared to operate in a manner similar to that seen in groups with typical language development. The implications of these findings for understanding the nature of specific language impairments and for treating …

Family Group Conferences As A Form Of Court Approved Alternative Dispute Resolution In Child Abuse And Neglect Cases, Jolene M. Lowry Oct 1997

Family Group Conferences As A Form Of Court Approved Alternative Dispute Resolution In Child Abuse And Neglect Cases, Jolene M. Lowry

University of Michigan Journal of Law Reform

The problems associated with long-term foster care of children have escalated over the past decade as more abused and neglected children enter the already overworked and underfunded state child protective system& The recent Personal Responsibility and Work Opportunity Reconciliation Act of 1996 mandates giving preference to placement within the extended family for children who cannot be returned to their parents. Compliance with this law requires substantial changes in the policies and procedures of human services agencies in most states. This Article discusses "family group conferencing,' a new model for working with families within the system. Family Group Conferencing originated in …

Developing A Child Advocacy Law Clinic: A Law School Clinical Legal Education Opportunity, Donald N. Duquette Oct 1997

Developing A Child Advocacy Law Clinic: A Law School Clinical Legal Education Opportunity, Donald N. Duquette

University of Michigan Journal of Law Reform

Clinical legal education has become an accepted and integral complement to traditional law school curricula. Professor Duquette argues that clinical education is uniquely able to integrate the teaching of practical skills and legal doctrine, elevating students' understanding of both. Duquette maintains that a child advocacy law clinic can teach a broad range of practical skill benefit the hosting law school by providing an opportunity for interdisciplinary education as well as a public relations benefit, while simultaneously serving an important need in most communities for quality representation of all parties in child abuse and neglect cases. Most importantly, participation in a …
