Identifying Polypharmacy In The Older Adult: A Survey Of Nurse Practitioners, Leslyn Ann Watson Jan 1997

Identifying Polypharmacy In The Older Adult: A Survey Of Nurse Practitioners, Leslyn Ann Watson

Master's Projects

Currently 12% of the population are over the age of 65 and receive more than one third of all prescription medications. These clients are at risk for polypharmacy which defined in the current literature is greater than four or more medications taken on a daily basis (this includes prescription and over the counter (OTC) medications). Polypharmacy places a client at increased risk for adverse drug reactions which can lead to injury and death. This survey of 109 Nurse Practitioners (NPs) identified whether older adults were assessed for polypharmacy. The number of respondents was 64, or 59%. During routine history and …

Higher Education In Rural America : A Study Of Northern Plains American Indian And Non-Indian Attitudes, Aspirations, Expectations, And Perceived Barriers, Marta Albertus Brosz Mohr

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This study addresses the need for educational research specific to rural populations of American Indians and their non-Indian neighbors. In order to provide answers to both theoretical and practical questions, a survey was conducted with a random sample of rural residents living within a twenty-five mile radius of a rural, tribal institution of higher education. The structured interviews gathered data regarding attitudes, aspirations, expectations, and perceived barriers. Analyses of the data indicate that this population has strong, positive attitudes toward higher education and aspires to a college education in spite of real and perceived barriers. This study does not support …

Early Interventions In Learning To Read, Kathleen Duax

Graduate Research Papers

The purpose of this literature review is to provide an insight into the world of creating readers; people who love to read and want to read. The review presents information about early interventions by parents and teachers that can increase a child's ability to learn to read. The intent is to help parents and teachers become more aware of the dimensions of literacy, to allow them to become more informed about literacy and the importance of early interventions, and to use this information in ways that can help children become readers.

Strategies For Sprinkling Spice On An Elementary Physical Education Program: Thematic Instruction Comes To The Gym!, Kristine Lee Whitcher Jan 1997

Strategies For Sprinkling Spice On An Elementary Physical Education Program: Thematic Instruction Comes To The Gym!, Kristine Lee Whitcher

Graduate Research Papers

The purpose of this project was to identify curriculum design strategies that would assist elementary physical education teachers in producing thematic units for elementary physical education classes. Strategies for integrating curriculum were identified in the literature then used to create and implement a thematic physical education project. Specific strategies were explained in detail through examples associated with the project. The strategies demonstrate that thematic instruction can successfully meet the needs of many children, invite new learning, and will assist teachers in coordinating themes with elementary physical education classes. A school-wide Olympic Fest was the culminating event of this project. There …

Children's Literature As Parallel Readings In The Secondary Language Arts Curriculum: An Annotated Teaching Guide, Kelly Diller Jan 1997

Children's Literature As Parallel Readings In The Secondary Language Arts Curriculum: An Annotated Teaching Guide, Kelly Diller

Graduate Research Papers

The purpose of this study was to match works of children's literature with works typically taught in secondary language arts curricula so that the matched sets may be taught as parallel readings. Selected works have parallels in character, mood or tone, plot, point of view, setting, subject, symbolism, and theme, and are presented as an annotated teaching guide. The matched sets selected were found to have significant parallel literary elements.

Using Institutional Financial Aid To Discount Tuition, Jon D. Buse Jan 1997

Using Institutional Financial Aid To Discount Tuition, Jon D. Buse

Graduate Research Papers

The purpose of this paper is to examine the increases in institutional spending for financial aid and to discuss the implications for colleges and universities. Specifically, it will examine how these increases have affected the way institutions award financial aid. The consequences of these changes are then discussed and a case study of a mid-sized, public university is presented to provide insight into the systems of awarding institutional aid. The discussion concludes with ideas for easing the need for institutions to commit such large amounts of money towards aid programs.

A Comprehensive Review Of Treatment Options For Children With Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, Kristin Vanderah Jan 1997

A Comprehensive Review Of Treatment Options For Children With Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, Kristin Vanderah

Graduate Research Papers

Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), a disorder affecting between 3 and 5 percent of school-age children, manifests as a combination of three core skill deficits: inattention, hyperactivity, and impulsivity. The deficits have been found to present children with many difficulties in both home and school settings. Thus, comprehensive treatment for individuals with ADHD is of paramount importance to their development and their academic and social experiences. The content of this paper is comprised of a review of the recent research that has been published regarding the three major theoretical orientations of ADHD interventions (pharmacological, behavioral, and multimodal treatment). All of …

Children Of Divorce : Implication To Teaching, Gloria Mao Jan 1997

Children Of Divorce : Implication To Teaching, Gloria Mao

Graduate Research Papers

The primary focus of this paper is the causes of divorce and their effects on elementary-age children. The adjustment problems of children of divorce in classrooms are examined. The importance of teachers' roles in easing the transition to school for children of divorce is emphasized. Teachers are assumed to be in a better position to observe the changes of children of divorce and to help them to adjust to their parents' divorce. By being sensitive and supportive, teachers can make a difference in their students' lives. A 7-hour workshop designed to enhance teachers' understanding about children of divorce is described.

Annual Survey Of Virginia Law: Criminal Law And Procedure, Betty Layne Desportes, Steven D. Benjamin Jan 1997

Annual Survey Of Virginia Law: Criminal Law And Procedure, Betty Layne Desportes, Steven D. Benjamin

University of Richmond Law Review

This article discusses holdings and trends in the published cases of the Virginia Court of Appeals and the Supreme Court of Virginia from August 1996 to July 1997. Although the form of this article generally follows the same form used by prior authors, several subject headings have been renamed to reflect the current focus of the courts. For example, during this period the court of appeals grappled with the "community caretaker" doctrine, bifurcated sentencing proceedings in felony cases, jury selection, and various hearsay exceptions. The supreme court addressed an indigent defendant's right to expert assistance, administrative license suspensions, and speedy …

Reluctant Charity: Poor Laws In The Original Thirteen States, William P. Quigley Jan 1997

Reluctant Charity: Poor Laws In The Original Thirteen States, William P. Quigley

University of Richmond Law Review

The poor laws of the original thirteen states can best be described as reluctant public charity. Assistance was provided to some of the poor but, when provided, was strictly rationed to those local residents considered worthy of help. Visitors, strangers and nonresident poor people were not helped and were legally run out of town. Poor relief for the locals was frequently given in ways that were demeaning and destructive to families. Poor people were always expected to work, and even poor children were taken from their families by the authorities and apprenticed to others. Poor adults that could work were …

The Supreme Court's Rejection Of Government Indemnification To Agent Orange Manufacturers In Hercules, Inc. V. United States: Distinguishing The Forest From The Trees?, Kacey Reed Jan 1997

The Supreme Court's Rejection Of Government Indemnification To Agent Orange Manufacturers In Hercules, Inc. V. United States: Distinguishing The Forest From The Trees?, Kacey Reed

University of Richmond Law Review

In recent years, the Supreme Court clarified the scope of immunity afforded to contractors for damages resulting from the performance of a government contract. However, the extent of the government's responsibility to indemnify third party claims resulting from a government contract has remained relatively obscure. Without clear direction, courts rejected government indemnification, relying upon a variety of detailed points of contract law which often concealed larger issues. In an appellate court dissent, Judge Plager criticized this result, warning that "undue attention to trees . . . often hides the forest."' Recently, in Hercules, Inc. v. United States, the Supreme Court …

Retirement Incentives In The Twenty First Century: The Move Toward Employer Control Of The Adea, Judith A. Mcmorrow Jan 1997

Retirement Incentives In The Twenty First Century: The Move Toward Employer Control Of The Adea, Judith A. Mcmorrow

University of Richmond Law Review

Retirement has become an increasingly important topic of public policy discussion in the United States, as well as an accepted, and even cherished, goal for many American workers. Consequently, it is not surprising that the Age Discrimination in Employment Act (ADEA) recognized, somewhat inartfully, the importance of retirement. When originally passed, the ADEA expressly provided an exemption for any bona fide employee benefit plan such as a retirement, pension, or insurance plan, which is not a subterfuge to evade the purposes of the ADEA. In 1986, Congress amended the ADEA to eliminate mandatory retirement, but made clear in its legislative …

Annual Survey Of Virginia Law: Antitrust And Trade Regulation Law, Michael F. Urbanski, Francis H. Casola, James R. Creekmore Jan 1997

Annual Survey Of Virginia Law: Antitrust And Trade Regulation Law, Michael F. Urbanski, Francis H. Casola, James R. Creekmore

University of Richmond Law Review

Consistent with the recent national trend, antitrust claims in Virginia met with little success in Virginia's courts over the past two years. Not only have the number of antitrust complaints dwindled, but those that are filed are routinely dismissed on the pleadings or by means of summary judgment after discovery. Recent antitrust conspiracy actions have failed for a variety of fundamental reasons, including a lack of standing to bring the action and a lack of a multiplicity of actors capable of engaging in a conspiracy. On the whole, monopolization claims fared no better, and have been dismissed largely because of …

Walter Macken: Life In Literature, Megan Lyn Denio Jan 1997

Walter Macken: Life In Literature, Megan Lyn Denio

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Walter Macken: Life in Literature introduces Walter Macken, a Galwegian novelist, playwright, short-story writer, and children's novelist, to an American audience in order to make his works better known. The themes in Macken's novels show common elements among Irish authors. The use of the common man and the use of Ireland's history are most prevalent in Irish literature. However, Macken's use of autobiographical elements in the midst of his presentation of life in the West of Ireland, in many ways, sets him apart from the other Irish authors. Few have chronicled the lives of the farmers and the fishermen in …

Educational Reform Through The Implementation Of National Standards: A Response, Richard J. Reynolds Jan 1997

Educational Reform Through The Implementation Of National Standards: A Response, Richard J. Reynolds

Mid-Western Educational Researcher

At this writing, federal initiatives for education reform seem to be taking their last gasps. There is a question as to whether Goals 2000 will make it to the year 2000. The development of voluntary, national standards has generated considerable debate both as to the desirability of such standards and the enlarged federal role in education. What is killing these initiatives and are they worth saving?

Minds-On And Hands-On Activity: Improving Instruction In Science For All Students, Thomas Andre Jan 1997

Minds-On And Hands-On Activity: Improving Instruction In Science For All Students, Thomas Andre

Mid-Western Educational Researcher

This paper briefly reviews evidence on gender inequities in science education. It argues that making science instruction more effective is one way in which greater equity can be achieved. A line of research conducted in my laboratory dealing with conceptual change (CC) approaches to science instruction is discussed. CC instruction explicitly activates students’ pre-existing conceptions, leads students to be dissatisfied with less than adequate conceptions, and helps students construct more effective conceptions. Across several studies, CC instruction was found to be more effective than didactic instruction. CC features added to science text and science lessons facilitate learning for both males …

Principles And Passions: The Intersection Of Abortion And Gun Rights , Nicholas J. Johnson Jan 1997

Principles And Passions: The Intersection Of Abortion And Gun Rights , Nicholas J. Johnson

Faculty Scholarship

In this article, Professor Nicholas J. Johnson explores the parallels between the right of armed self-defense and the woman's right to abortion. Professor Johnson demonstrates that the theories and principles advanced to support the abortion right intersect substantially with an individual's right to armed self-defense. Professor Johnson uncovers common ground between the gun and abortion rights - two rights that have come to symbolize society's deepest social and cultural divisions - divisions that prompt many to embrace the abortion right while summarily rejecting the gun right. Unreflective disparagement of the gun right, he argues, threatens the vitality of the abortion …

Freedom Of Assembly And The Right To Passage In Modern English Legal History , Rachel Vorspan Jan 1997

Freedom Of Assembly And The Right To Passage In Modern English Legal History , Rachel Vorspan

Faculty Scholarship

This Article suggests, on the broadest level, that the history of the "right to passage" in the past two centuries is explicable only in terms of the complex interaction between formal legal doctrine on the one hand and social and political pressures on the other. Specific challenges to public order significantly shaped the evolution of legal rules, but these rules, once established, constrained official action and compelled the authorities at critical junctures to develop countervailing strategies. This exploration confirms that neither an externalist nor internalist approach to legal history by itself adequately explains historical change and, moreover, that the relative …

The Economics Of Prefunding Social Security And Medicare Benefits, Martin Feldstein, Andrew Samwick Jan 1997

The Economics Of Prefunding Social Security And Medicare Benefits, Martin Feldstein, Andrew Samwick

Dartmouth Scholarship

This paper presents a detailed analysis of the economics of prefunding benefits for the aged, focusing on social security but indicating some of the analogous magnitudes for prefunding Medicare benefits. We use detailed census and social security information to model the transition to a fully funded system based on mandatory contributions to individual accounts. The funded system that we examine would permanently maintain the level of benefits now specified in current law and would require no new government borrowing (other than eventually selling the bonds that are officially in the social security trust fund). During the transition, the combined rate …
