A Mormon Cultural Study Of Musical Preference, Alden L. Weight Jan 1997

A Mormon Cultural Study Of Musical Preference, Alden L. Weight

Theses and Dissertations

Music is an important yet relatively unnoticed part of the everyday world almost all of us take for granted. Whether in the car, watching television, shopping, at work or at home, even waking up in the morning or going to sleep at night, and so forth, music surrounds us, soothes us, disturbs us, and occasionally goes so far as to persuade us. Although music plays a significant role in many areas of life, its relationship to society is especially evident in the religious sphere. Therefore, the religious sphere is an ideal place to examine what music does and what it …

Crisis Of Affiliation: The Merger Of Arkansas Agricultural And Mechanical College With The University Of Arkansas, Gary S. Gaston

Theses and Dissertations

This study examined the applicability of Kurt Lewin's Force Field Theory to the merger of Arkansas A&M College and the University of Arkansas System in 1971. The merger followed Lewin's change process: unfreezing, moving, and refreezing. This study also examined the applicability of Hugh Thompson's '21 Suggestions for a Successful Merger' as a framework for addressing the variety of issues in an institutional merger. This examination asked five questions: What were the forces moving Arkansas A&M toward a merger? What were the forces opposing the merger? What preparation went into the merger? What was the political process for the merger? …

The Effect Of Water Immersion On Lactic Acid Kinetics During Swimming Interval Training Recovery Periods, Richard P. Morris Jan 1997

The Effect Of Water Immersion On Lactic Acid Kinetics During Swimming Interval Training Recovery Periods, Richard P. Morris

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of the study was to determine the difference in the circulation of lactic acid following high intensity swimming, between resting immersed in water or resting sitting on the pool deck, completely out of the water. Six (four male and two female) collegiate swimmers volunteered for the study. The swimmers were randomly assigned to two groups and a counterbalance design was employed, where each group experienced both treatments (one resting out of the water, one resting in the water), in different orders. Each swimmer completed an identical warm-up and then swam five 100 yard swims at 85-95% intensity, with …

The Development Of Baseball Umpires' Uniforms, 1846-1996, Elizabeth K. Martin Jan 1997

The Development Of Baseball Umpires' Uniforms, 1846-1996, Elizabeth K. Martin

Open Access Master's Theses

Organized baseball games, from 1846 on, required the services of one or more umpires to enforce the rules of play. The umpire's formality of dress helped to establish his authority by distinguishing him from both the players and the spectators. Throughout the one hundred and fifty year period of this study the umpire remained one of the most formally and conservatively dressed men at the ball park.

For the first quarter-century of modern baseball, umpires were amateurs who wore their customary clothing when asked to officiate. This consisted of a frock coat, top hat, white linen and matched or contrasting-colored …

Healthy Back Promotion Program: Barriers To Implementation, A. Alice Endter Jan 1997

Healthy Back Promotion Program: Barriers To Implementation, A. Alice Endter

Master's Projects

The Occupational Health Nurse Practitioners (OHNPs) and the education specialist at a community hospital in northern California designed and implemented the Patient Lifting Equipment Program and protocol. After 1 year, the investigator used a questionnaire to identify and describe 17 female subjects' barriers to implementing the new equipment and protocol and their risk factors for back injuries. The barriers that the subjects cited most often were increased time to prepare and use the devices and the lack of staff who could assist with the lifts. Risk factors, e.g., age, body mass index, hours worked, stress on the job, and social …

The Differences Between Women And Men In The Length Of Time Between Onset Of Cardiac Symptoms And Undergoing A Cardiac Catheterization, Anita Gertsch Jan 1997

The Differences Between Women And Men In The Length Of Time Between Onset Of Cardiac Symptoms And Undergoing A Cardiac Catheterization, Anita Gertsch

Master's Projects

Coronary artery disease is a leading cause of death among women. Even so, research suggests that women continue to receive less aggressive cardiac treatment than men. The purpose of the research was to determine if there was a time difference in initiation of cardiac catheterization in a selected population of men and women. A chart review was completed on adult women (n=20) and men (n=20), with varied adult ages, at a hospital based cardiac catheterization laboratory in Northern California. The charts were chosen randomly from the daily catheterization list. Data collection included age, gender, preferred spoken language, pay source, prior …

Evaluation Of The Effectiveness Of A Direct Observed Therapy Program With Vietnamese Tuberculosis Patients, Jacqueline T. Mac Jan 1997

Evaluation Of The Effectiveness Of A Direct Observed Therapy Program With Vietnamese Tuberculosis Patients, Jacqueline T. Mac

Master's Projects

Tuberculosis (TB) has long been recognized as a major public health problem. The rate of TB is high in immigrants and the frequency of drug resistance is increasing. A major reason for the development of resistant infections as well as relapse is poor adherence to TB treatment. In response to this problem, direct observed therapy (DOT) was introduced to the TB program in Santa Clara County in 1993. The purpose of this study is to compare the completion rates, relapse rates, and sputum conversion rates between a DOT group and a non-DOT group of Vietnamese TB patients. A chart review …

Congestive Heart Failure And Quality Of Life: Can Patient Education Make A Difference?, Mary Beth Perniz Jan 1997

Congestive Heart Failure And Quality Of Life: Can Patient Education Make A Difference?, Mary Beth Perniz

Master's Projects

Congestive heart failure is a widely prevalent sequel to other chronic medical and cardiovascular conditions. It is of growing concern to nurse practitioners in the primary care setting. Quality of life, as perceived by an individual, is directly affected while living with a chronic terminal illness. This pilot project conducted in a solo medical practice examines the effect of a patient education program on the quality of life of patients living with congestive heart failure. Basic patient education regarding anatomy, physiology, daily body weights, medication management, sodium restriction, regular exercise, and stress reduction was taught to a sample of patients …

Evaluation Of Nurse Practitioner Management Of Obese Patients, Sevasti Simotas Jan 1997

Evaluation Of Nurse Practitioner Management Of Obese Patients, Sevasti Simotas

Master's Projects

The purpose of this research project was to study current practice behaviors of adult and family nurse practitioners when evaluating and managing obese patients. Forty-three nurse practitioners were surveyed by questionnaire. Study results indicated that nurses• assessment of obesity was limited in the areas of body mass index measurement and co-morbid condition assessment. In addition, the nurse practitioners studied did not discuss adjusting caloric intake to support patients' caloric needs. The discussion of caloric intake versus caloric needs in conjunction with portion control is important to ensure weight loss success. The knowledge gained from this research may increase nurse practitioners' …

Higher Education In Rural America : A Study Of Northern Plains American Indian And Non-Indian Attitudes, Aspirations, Expectations, And Perceived Barriers, Marta Albertus Brosz Mohr

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This study addresses the need for educational research specific to rural populations of American Indians and their non-Indian neighbors. The structured interviews gathered data regarding attitudes, aspirations, expectations, and perceived barriers. Analyses of the data indicate that this population has strong, positive attitudes toward higher education and aspires to a college education in spite of real and perceived barriers. This study does not support …
