Maternal-Infant Interaction In Infants With Colic, Lynne M. Andreozzi Jan 1997

Maternal-Infant Interaction In Infants With Colic, Lynne M. Andreozzi

Open Access Master's Theses

The experience of having an infant with colic may affect early interactions between the mother and infant. The present study investigated infant - mother interaction in infants with colic, excessive crying, and non-colic controls and their mothers. The Colic Symptom Checklist was used to identify infants between 4-6 weeks of age with colic (N=18), excessive crying (N=9), and controls without crying problems (N=13). The subjects were healthy, full-term normal infants recruited through pediatric referral. There were no differences between the three groups of infants for infant medical or family demographic characteristics. Face-to-face interaction was used to describe the caregiver's behavior, …

Initiating Coastal Management In Kenya And Zanzibar, Tanzania: A Strategic Approach, Mark Amaral Jan 1997

Initiating Coastal Management In Kenya And Zanzibar, Tanzania: A Strategic Approach, Mark Amaral

Open Access Master's Theses

Integrated Coastal Management (ICM) is a process that unites government and the community, science and management, sectoral and pubic interests to wisely protect and develop coastal ecosystems and resources. As funding for ICM continues to increase, investments are often made quickly, without adequate consultation with the stakeholders and host institutions. This can lead to programs and projects that lack focus and outstrip the host institution's capacity and capabilities. By thinking strategically about the current coastal management problems and pressures and developing a strategy document using an organized and strategic process, investment can be made wisely and at a scale that …

Local Efforts For Groundwater Protection: An Assessment Of Strategies Within The State And Federal Context South Kingstown, Rhode Island, Kathleen M. Murray

Open Access Master's Theses

The 1986 amendments to the Federal Safe Drinking Water Act (SDWA) of 1974 (42 USC 300f et seq.) placed additional requirements on states and municipalities to protect water supplies in a new way: The amendments mandate states to adopt wellhead protection programs. The Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management (DEM) is carrying out these requirements and, following federal guidelines, has adopted a program entailing requirements for most the 39 Rhode Island communities. Entitled the Rhode Island Wellhead Protection Program, DEM identified steps that State level departments, local water suppliers, and municipalities must follow to ensure continued potability of the state's …

Public Playgrounds: An Examination Of Current Issues Associated With Public Play Facilities, Albert V. Ranaldi Jr.

Open Access Master's Theses

The issues surrounding playgrounds are in need of attention. This research paper attempts to address the safety and developmental concerns regarding playground equipment and design. Since the most immediate concern is safety, the discussion will focus on issues concerning playground safety. A brief history of playground development, developmental theories of play, and safety issues will be presented. Discussion of these issues will lead to recommendations for a mandatory public playground safety policy and program. The standards for the safety policy and program will be adopted from the 1991 U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission's Handbook For Public Playground Safety, the 1993 …

Planning In Controversy A Case Study, Roseann Hegarty Cronan

Open Access Master's Theses

Practicing planners are facing an increasing number of professional and ethical dilemmas in their professional lives. As public servants, both elected officials and professionals have been forced to become more responsive to the public demand and attitudes. As a result, many of the values influential in the past have been reassessed (Thomas, 1991).

On August 29, 1994, the governor of the state of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations announced a compact for an Indian sponsored gambling casino in the town of West Greenwich, Rhode Island. The compact was subject to both local and statewide approval. The referendum would take place …

Enhancing Social Service To At-Risk Children, James Paglia

Open Access Master's Theses

The Children, Youth & Families Issue Group, part of the University of Rhode Island's Cooperative Extension Service, has provided education outreach and technical assistance to community based social service providers since 1990. In an effort to enhance the effectiveness of the programming which they provide the group initiated a research project designed to illuminate strategies for increasing the effectiveness of community-based service provision. This study uses the theory of developmental contextualism as presented by Dr. Richard Lerner to suggest ways in which service providers can enhance their effectiveness by understanding the particular context of their community.

The study focuses on …

Strategic Planning: A Case Illustration, Christopher Delvaille

Open Access Master's Theses

The following Masters Thesis Project is a case illustration exploring the strategic planning process as it pertains to public agencies, in this case a public housing authority. This paper has been written using the participant observation method in which the author served as the project manager for the Providence Housing Authority 's 1995 strategic plan entitled "Strategic Plan 2000."

The introduction includes a brief description of the housing authority, which addresses both its internal management structure, and resident population, as it existed when the plan was written. The first chapter explains the political, and thus in some degree the social …

Improving Open-Space Subdivisions In Charlton, Massachusetts: Connecting Back To The Land, Bruce E. Keller Jan 1997

Improving Open-Space Subdivisions In Charlton, Massachusetts: Connecting Back To The Land, Bruce E. Keller

Open Access Master's Theses

In Charlton, Massachusetts, the current open-space subdivision option doesn't work well for the benefit of people or wildlife, but rather allows the developer to cut costs without giving a more beneficial design in return. Open space "islands" are being created that have no connectivity with one another, making them little more than buffers of undisturbed land within and among developments. While these buffers are somewhat useful from an aesthetic perspective, better regulations and design guidelines would be helpful in creating more useable "corridors" for wildlife and trails for people, which in return will help to preserve wildlife biodiversity and provide …

Evaluating Urban Enterprise Zones As A Policy For Inner-City Minority Communities, Beth Ashman Collins Jan 1997

Evaluating Urban Enterprise Zones As A Policy For Inner-City Minority Communities, Beth Ashman Collins

Open Access Master's Theses

Can enterprise zones have any long-term effects on the economic status of minority populations or on the concentration of poverty in urban neighborhoods? This question was tackled from two perspectives. First, do enterprise zone interventions make sense in the context of existing models of racial inequality and ghetto development. Second, do the existing literature and evaluation studies provide evidence that enterprise zones are benefiting the urban poor in general and poor minorities in particular?

This study examines five selected official evaluations of state enterprise zone programs looking at how incentives are targeted toward specific populations and places and whether benefits …

Preparation Of Powder Precursors And Evaporation Of Photoconductive Indium Sulfide Films, Chris Barber, Robert Engelken, Brandon Kemp, Wasim Aleem, Imran Khan, Chris Edrington, Michael Buck, Clayton Workman, Anup Thapa, Tom Jakobs

Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science

We have demonstrated significant photoconductance in indium sulfide thin films prepared by thermal vacuum evaporation ofIn2$3 powders synthesized in-house by chemical precipitation ofInCl3 or In(CH3COO)3, and (NH4)2S or Na2S. The Delta G lambda/Gdark values have been as high as 0.1 in the initial unoptimized films. Excess sulfur (via a mixture of polysulfide and sulfide ions in the synthesis bath) appears to be important in achieving reproducible and large photoconductivities. In2S3 is particularly attractive as a lower toxicity alternative to CdS in optoelectronic applications such as photovoltaic and photoconductive cells.

Haiti Update, Donald E. Schulz Dr. Jan 1997

Haiti Update, Donald E. Schulz Dr.

Books, Monographs & Collaborative Studies

Recent developments in Haiti including political assassinations attributed to both former Haitian military personnel and members of President Preval's presidential security unit have once again thrust that troubled country into the international spotlight. In the process, questions have been raised about the viability of the nascent Haitian democracy and the political stability on which it rests. In turn, that has led to questions about the length and nature of the international commitment, including that of the United States. Thus it was that in September 1996 Dr. Donald E. Schulz, the author of two previous Strategic Studies Institute reports on Haiti …
