Triazine Herbicide Exposure And Breast Cancer Incidence: An Ecologic Study Of Kentucky Counties, Michele A. Kettles, Steven R. Browning, Timothy Scott Prince, Sanford W. Horstman Nov 1997

Triazine Herbicide Exposure And Breast Cancer Incidence: An Ecologic Study Of Kentucky Counties, Michele A. Kettles, Steven R. Browning, Timothy Scott Prince, Sanford W. Horstman

Preventive Medicine and Environmental Health Faculty Publications

The incidence of breast cancer in the United States has steadily increased for the past three decades. Exposure to excess estrogen, in both natural and synthetic forms, has been implicated as a risk factor for the development of this disease. Considerable interest has been focused on organochlorines, such as the triazine herbicides, and their possible role in the initiation or promotion of human breast cancer. To explore this relationship, an ecologic study of Kentucky counties was designed. Exposure to triazines was estimated by use of water contamination data, corn crop production, and pesticide use data. A summary index of triazine …

Responding To Price Signals In Communal Agriculture: Shaker Hog Production, 1788-1850, John E. Murray, Metin M. Cosgel Nov 1997

Responding To Price Signals In Communal Agriculture: Shaker Hog Production, 1788-1850, John E. Murray, Metin M. Cosgel

Economics Working Papers

Isolated Shaker communal farms stressed self-sufficiency as an ideal but carefully chose which goods to buy and sell in external markets and which to produce and consume themselves. We use records of hog slaughter weights to investigate the extent to which the Shakers incorporated market-based price information in determining production levels of a consumption good which they did not sell in external markets: pork. Granger causality tests indicate that Shaker pork production decisions were influenced as hypothesized, strongly by corn prices and weakly by pork prices. We infer that attention to opportunity costs of goods that they produced and consumed …

Socioeconomic Status And Health In Blacks And Whites: The Problem Of Residual Confounding And The Resiliency Of Race, Jay S. Kaufman, Richard S. Cooper, Daniel L. Mcgee Nov 1997

Socioeconomic Status And Health In Blacks And Whites: The Problem Of Residual Confounding And The Resiliency Of Race, Jay S. Kaufman, Richard S. Cooper, Daniel L. Mcgee

Faculty Publications

A large number of epidemiologic studies have focused on racial/ethnic differences, particularly between blacks and whites. Because health endpoints and racial categorizations are associated with socioeconomic status, investigator, generally adjust for socioeconomic indicators. The intention is usually to control for confounding, thereby making groups comparable and excluding socioeconomic status as an alternative explanation to hypotheses of innate physiologic differences. A threat to the validity of these analyses is therefore the presence of residual confounding. We identify four potential sources of residual confounding in this analytical design: categorization of socioeconomic status variables, measurement error in socioeconomic indicators, use of aggregated socioeconomic …

Mortality From Coronary Heart Disease And Cardiovascular Disease Among Adult U.S. Hispanics: Findings From The National Health Interview Survey (1986 To 1994), Youlian Liao, Richard S. Cooper, Guichan Cao, Jay S. Kaufman, Andrew E. Long, Daniel L. Mcgee

Faculty Publications

Objectives. We sought to estimate the coronary heart disease (CHD) and cardiovascular disease (CVD) mortality experience of U.S. Hispanics. Background. Limited information is available concerning the mortality from CHD among U.S. Hispanics, the nation's second largest minority group. Methods. The study used data from the National Health Interview Survey (1986 to 1994), including representative national samples of 246.239 non-Hispanic whites, 38,042 blacks and 14,965 Hispanics who were ≤45 years old at baseline. Mean follow-up of mortality was 5 years (range 1 to 10). Results. During the follow-up period, 27,702 whites (11%), 4,976 blacks (13%) and 1,061 Hispanics (7%) died. Among …

Hispanic Social Needs Survey - New Orleans Metropolitan Area, Susan E. Howell Nov 1997

Hispanic Social Needs Survey - New Orleans Metropolitan Area, Susan E. Howell

Survey Research Center Publications

Hispanics in this metro area are not an isolated, marginalized minority group. Their economic status, their fluency in English, and their many years in this country have produced a high level of integration into American society. New Orleans area Hispanics are long-term residents who have come primarily from Central America and the Caribbean. They are generally satisfied with their lives in this country and are quite patriotic.  Hispanics are diverse educationally, but over a third have college degrees. There is a "gender gap" in the educational level of Hispanics, with males being significantly better educated. The gap extends to occupation, …

Occupational Therapy's Link To Vocational Reeducation, 1910-1925., Sharon A. Gutman Nov 1997

Occupational Therapy's Link To Vocational Reeducation, 1910-1925., Sharon A. Gutman

Department of Occupational Therapy Faculty Papers

The development of occupational therapy is rooted in early 20th century medical reform. During the early 1910s, several members of the medical profession, human service workers, and the larger American society were increasingly disturbed by medical practices that did not consider the individual's personal experience of disability. Occupational therapy was developed, in part, out of this desire to provide persons with treatment that helped them to function in their communities despite their disability. Early occupational therapy leaders envisioned the fledgling profession as a societal service capable of assisting persons with disabilities to return to both work and community life. Vocational …

Expression Of Protein Kinase C Beta In The Heart Causes Hypertrophy In Adult Mice And Sudden Death In Neonates, Joel C. Bowman, Susan F. Steinberg, Tiangrong Jiang, David L. Geenen, Glenn I. Fishman, Peter M. Buttrick Nov 1997

Expression Of Protein Kinase C Beta In The Heart Causes Hypertrophy In Adult Mice And Sudden Death In Neonates, Joel C. Bowman, Susan F. Steinberg, Tiangrong Jiang, David L. Geenen, Glenn I. Fishman, Peter M. Buttrick

Peer Reviewed Articles

Protein kinase C (PKC) activation in the heart has been linked to a hypertrophic phenotype and to processes that influence contractile function. To establish whether PKC activation is sufficient to induce an abnormal phenotype, PKCbeta was conditionally expressed in cardiomyocytes of transgenic mice. Transgene expression in adults caused mild and progressive ventricular hypertrophy associated with impaired diastolic relaxation, whereas expression in newborns caused sudden death associated with marked abnormalities in the regulation of intracellular calcium. Thus, the PKC signaling pathway in cardiocytes has different effects depending on the timing of expression and, in the adult, is sufficient to induce pathologic …

Socio-Economic Rights And The South African Transition: The Role Of The Truth And Reconciliation Commission, Ronald Slye

Faculty Articles

This article examines a part of a foundational principle of the South African Bill of Rights that individuals are entitled to a range of rights that ensure individual security, freedom, and well-being, and that these rights are interdependent and the crucial role of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission (the "TRC") in laying the groundwork for the fulfillment of those rights.

Open Fractures Caused By High Velocity Missiles: The Outcome Of Treatment Of 39 Fractures Followed For 1-3 Years, M A. Khan, R Hussain, S H. Khan, M Umar

Department of Surgery Docs

Between 1993 and 1995, thirty-three patients having 39 fractures caused by missiles fired from a high velocity rifle were reviewed retrospectively between 1 and 3 years after injury and the outcome of treatment assessed. Majority (33 out of 39) were Grade III. Union was achieved in 35 out of 39 fractures, there was deep infection and delayed union in one case each. Non-union occurred in three fractures. The fractures were stabilized using different techniques, but highest complication rate was seen with the use of the static external fixator. This was related to the severe nature of the injury as well …
