Are The Financial Accounting Standards Board's Current Standards For Nonprofit Organizations More Useful Than Previous Guidance?, Sarah E. Herold Jan 1997

Are The Financial Accounting Standards Board's Current Standards For Nonprofit Organizations More Useful Than Previous Guidance?, Sarah E. Herold

Honors Capstones

The purpose of this paper is to find out whether the Statement of Financial Accounting Standards No. 117 provides more useful information to users than previous nonprofit financial accounting guidance under individual audit guides. More information is required under the new standards, as well as different financial statement formats. However, some users may find new financial statements confusing. Furthermore, the financial statements require no measure of operating income, despite users' request for some type of "bottom line". However, most users should find the new information helpful and the new format more useful. In my study, I administered a questionnaire to …

Auditory-Verbal Therapy : A Comprehensive Approach For Children Who Are Hearing Impaired, Allison Husarik Jan 1997

Auditory-Verbal Therapy : A Comprehensive Approach For Children Who Are Hearing Impaired, Allison Husarik

Honors Capstones

The focus of this project was auditory-verbal practice with children who are hearing impaired. Auditory-verbal practice is a comprehensive approach which teaches the child with a hearing impairment to make maximum use of his or her amplified residual hearing. Emphasis is placed on early identification and ongoing audiological evaluation and aural habilitation. Parents and auditory-verbal professionals then work together to teach the child to listen, to process verbal language, and to speak. As a result, the child acquires the ability to communicate through speech. After learning about auditory-verbal therapy through class work and observation, I became particularly interested in learning …

Tracking Treatment Efficacy In Family-Based Treatment, Renee Randorf

Honors Capstones

Family-Based Treatment (FBT) is a new approach to speech-language pathology that differs significantly from the traditional model of therapy. FBT was formulated by Dr. James Andrews and Mary Andrews at Northern Illinois University. This new approach was introduced at the Scotland First 'XIX Congress of the International Association of Logopaedics and Phoniatrics in August of 1983. In 1984 FBT was presented to the American Speech-Language and Hearing Association. Then in 1986 the new approach was printed in the publication of Seminars in Speech and Language. James Andrews, Ph.D., is currently a professor in the Department of Communicative Disorders and Director …

Resistivity Surveying Uses In Landfill Monitoring, Sonya Schroeder Jan 1997

Resistivity Surveying Uses In Landfill Monitoring, Sonya Schroeder

Honors Capstones

There is always a need for new techniques to use in landfill monitoring. Geophysical surveying encompasses a range of techniques that have potential for use over landfills in detecting landfill geometry and interior characteristics. Three geophysical techniques are gravity surveying, magnetic surveying, and electrical resistivity surveying. Resistivity surveys measure the potential difference between electrodes placed in the ground. The electrodes can be arranged in several different arrays, two of which are the Wenner array and the Schlumberger array.' Resistivity data can then be analyzed using computer modeling software. Two such programs in use for resistivity layered-earth modeling are Veslg and …

Prediction Of Potential Antimigraine Activity Using Artificial Neural Networks, Qing Luo, Jerry A. Darsey, Cesar M. Compadre, Sanjay K. Mitra

Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science

More than 10 million Americans, three quarters of them women, suffer some degree of recurrent migraine headaches. Feverfew [Tanacetum parthenium (L.) Schultz-Bip.) is a member of the Asteraceae family that is native to Europe. This plant is a perennial flowering aromatic plant common in gardens. It has been widely used as a self-medication of arthritis, fever, and migraine headaches for over 2000 years. Sesquiterpene lactones (SL) are the components responsible for the antimigraine activity of feverfew. In this research, the relationship between SL structural information and their biological activity was studied by using Gaussian 92 program in conjunction with artificial …

Leaving College: Why Students Withdrew From A University, Ross J. Rapaport, Sharlon L. George, Gary A. Adams, Susan E. Clarkson

Management Faculty Research and Publications

The purpose of this study was to determine the reasons why students withdrew during a semester from a mid-sized, comprehensive university located in the Midwest. Six hundred forty-five students were asked to complete the ACT "Withdrawing/Non-returning Student Survey" during the 1992-93 academic year and summer semester. Three hundred sixty-five completed surveys were returned for a 57% response rate.

Respondents indicated many different reasons for leaving which varied by year in school and whether or not the respondent was a graduate or undergraduate student. There was no typical withdrawing student and there were many reasons students withdrew over which the university …

Impact Of Amateur Educational Video Viewing On Language Acquisition Of Preschool Children, Jennifer L. Radcliffe Jan 1997

Impact Of Amateur Educational Video Viewing On Language Acquisition Of Preschool Children, Jennifer L. Radcliffe

Masters Theses

Child language-learning is a complex process that varies for each individual child. Researchers have found that children learn from viewing professional television programs specifically designed for children, such as Sesame Street. Professional television programming principles can be adopted to produce amateur educational videos. Video may also be a viable option to provide repetitive models to improve vocabulary acquisition within speech-language pathology. The purpose of this study was to measure the effect of direct stimulation with amateur educational videos on a child's general and specific vocabulary acquisition.

A six-week experiment included an initial two-week control period, a two-week experimental period …

The Treatment Of Vegetable Processing Waste Water Using A Pilot Scale Sequencing Batch Reactor Activated Sludge Process, Peter Hassett Jan 1997

The Treatment Of Vegetable Processing Waste Water Using A Pilot Scale Sequencing Batch Reactor Activated Sludge Process, Peter Hassett

Theses

The SBR process is a discontinuous, unsteady state process and has developed popularity in many countries assisted by reliable control technology for example programmable logic control. A typical SBR installation achieves equalisation, aeration and clarification of batches of wastewater on a timed sequence in one basin. This is in contrast to a volume sequenced process such as the conventional continuous stirred tank reactor where individual treatment objectives are met in separate basins. Advantages include, flexability, minimum energy input, consistent effluent quality and inhibition of filament organism growth by properly controlling substrate concentration and aeration sequences. Nitrification, denitrification and Bio-P removal …

Self-Assessment Of Total Quality Management Programs, Hung Yi Wu, Henry Allen Wiebe, John Politi Jan 1997

Self-Assessment Of Total Quality Management Programs, Hung Yi Wu, Henry Allen Wiebe, John Politi

Engineering Management and Systems Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Total quality management (TQM) has been increasingly accepted as a management philosophy. Criteria such as those contained in the Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award (MBNQA) often guide TQM implementation. However, reports indicate that fully assessing TQM efforts is difficult and hiring experts to help with this task is expensive. Using survey instruments is an attractive alternative to full-scale assessment. Despite the availability of many papers covering organizational performance assessment, few instruments specifically address TQM evaluation. Furthermore, none of the TQM assessment instruments has been subjected to rigorous validation; thus, only modest confidence can be placed in results obtained from their …

Hiv And Aids Test Results And The Duty To Warn Third Parties: A Proposal For Uniform Guidelines For Texas Professionals Comment., Tammy R. Wavle Jan 1997

Hiv And Aids Test Results And The Duty To Warn Third Parties: A Proposal For Uniform Guidelines For Texas Professionals Comment., Tammy R. Wavle

St. Mary's Law Journal

Professionals in Texas are increasingly faced with the issues of if and when they must disclose infection of the Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV), and if they may be held liable for failing to disclose a known infection. These professionals must deal with conflicting guidance from the courts and legislature. The source of confusion is the conflict between the common-law duty to warn identifiable third parties of the dangers posed to them and the Texas statute governing confidentiality of test results for Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS). The Communicable Disease Prevention and Control Act (CDPCA) mandates disclosure of positive test results …
