Why Critical Ai Literacy Matters: A Scoping Review Of Ai Literacy Literature And Its Implications For Governance, Anabel Quan-Haase, Katharine Willis, Hillary Anderson, Selena Gignac, T Maeda

School of Art, Design and Architecture

As artificial intelligence (AI) becomes increasingly embedded in public infrastructure, AI literacy has emerged as a critical priority. While AI is often said to have the potential to improve efficiency, growing evidence shows that, when left unchecked, it can deepen inequality and reinforce systemic biases. This gap between promise and practice exposes an urgent need for a more socially grounded understanding of AI literacy that accounts for lived experiences, not just technical skills. Current understandings of AI literacy need to include informed decision-making, critical engagement and resistance to technological coercion by taking an agency-driven approach. This project is a scoping …

The Dictatorial Public Goods Game, Gabriele Camera, Gary Charness, Nir Chemeya, Ro'i Zultan Jun 2026

The Dictatorial Public Goods Game, Gabriele Camera, Gary Charness, Nir Chemeya, Ro'i Zultan

ESI Working Papers

We propose a novel game, the Dictatorial Public Goods Game, to study the interplay between collective resource generation and centralized provision of public goods. After making choices in a standard Voluntary Contribution Mechanism (VCM), one player is selected from the group to administrate the contributions: either provide the public good or expropriate the collected resources for personal gain. We find that adding this centralized mechanism reduces efficiency compared to the standard VCM. Although higher contributions increase the material incentive to expropriate, they lead to more provision. Thus, pro-social choices in the contribution and in the provision stages act as …

Whose Game Is It? Re-Centering Athlete Voice In Interscholastic Sports: A Literature Review, Nick Pocius

Essays in Education

Interscholastic athletics have long been positioned as educational spaces that support the holistic development of young people. However, an increasing emphasis on outcomes such as winning, advancement, and visibility has shifted the experience away from its intended purpose. This article examines the growing disconnect between what athletes report valuing in their sport experience and the expectations imposed by adults and broader societal pressures. Drawing on motivational frameworks such as Self-Determination Theory and achievement goal theory, alongside practitioner experience, the article identifies four key elements that athletes consistently prioritize: belonging, growth, autonomy, and meaningful engagement. It then explores how external influences, …

Medical Image Integrity Protection Through U-Net Based Roi Segmentation And Hybrid Integer Wavelet–Quadtree Embedding, Muna M. Jawad, Rasha F. Nadhim, Noor A. Yousif, Ashwaq T. Hashim

Journal of Intelligent Informatics, Networking, and Cybersecurity

For decades, secure techniques in medical images have focused on securing the sensitive information through limiting direct access to the images themselves. Nonetheless, these methods tend to cause distortion on the images that can affect the diagnostic value and cause loss of crucial information. There arises the fundamental problem of secure embedding of medical data in such a way that does not affect the diagnostic integrity of the image. To overcome this limitation, a secure yet hidden data-hiding mechanism is introduced that is exploited U-Net-based deep learning for accurate Region of Interest (ROI) segmentation. Therefore U-Net architecture is used for …

Differentiation Of Self As A Therapist Effect In Couple Therapy, Nathan D. Knebel Jun 2026

Differentiation Of Self As A Therapist Effect In Couple Therapy, Nathan D. Knebel

Theses and Dissertations

Murray Bowen proposed that a therapist's level of differentiation of self influences therapeutic effectiveness, particularly in clinically distressed relational systems. Although existing literature has demonstrated that therapist effects account for a meaningful portion of variance in couple therapy outcomes, differentiation of self has received limited empirical attention as a therapist-level predictor. The present article proposes a framework for empirically examining Bowen's hypothesis by investigating whether therapist differentiation predicts trajectories of couple relationship quality across treatment. Additionally, the article explores theoretical pathways through which therapists may increase their level of differentiation, assuming Bowen's hypothesis is supported.

1 Billion Birds Lost: Mechanisms Of Window Collisions And Possible Mitigation Strategies At Lawrence University, Shoshana Schmit Jun 2026

1 Billion Birds Lost: Mechanisms Of Window Collisions And Possible Mitigation Strategies At Lawrence University, Shoshana Schmit

Lawrence University Honors Projects

Windows are currently the largest killer of birds on the planet, with an estimated 1 billion birds dying from collisions annually. If birds that hit windows do not die on impact, they may either die elsewhere shortly afterwards, resulting in the number of carcasses at collision sites being a conservative estimate of the actual number of fatalities. During the day, proximity to foraging sites and reflectivity play crucial roles in the danger of windows, and during the night, artificial illumination emitting from windows disorients and inhibits navigational cues. To explore this topic on campus, I documented bird collisions at Lawrence …

Person-Centered Profiles Of Body Image (Dis)Satisfaction Among Adolescents And Young Adults With Type 1 Diabetes, Adora Elise Choquette Jun 2026

Person-Centered Profiles Of Body Image (Dis)Satisfaction Among Adolescents And Young Adults With Type 1 Diabetes, Adora Elise Choquette

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

Individuals with type 1 diabetes (T1D) are uniquely vulnerable to body image dissatisfaction due to a complex interplay of pre-existing psychosocial risk factors and health demands necessitated by T1D care. These individual-level risk factors lend to high degrees of heterogeneity in body image (dis)satisfaction. Given that body image dissatisfaction heightens the risk of disordered eating behaviors and subsequent adverse diabetes-related outcomes, it is important to understand antecedents of body image dissatisfaction in individuals with T1D to inform care. The present study included a sample of adolescents and young adults (AYA) ages 13-35 with T1D (N=891, Mage=21.14 years (SDage=6.03 years), 57.8% …

Bap1 Loss Links Myc Activation, Stress Response Vulnerability, And Disease Progression In Kidney Cancer, Ilya Strunilin Jun 2026

Bap1 Loss Links Myc Activation, Stress Response Vulnerability, And Disease Progression In Kidney Cancer, Ilya Strunilin

Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations

BAP1, a chromatin modifier, is a frequently mutated tumor suppressor in clear cell renal cell carcinoma (ccRCC). Mutations in BAP1 are associated with a more aggressive and lethal disease. However, the downstream mediators of BAP1 loss in ccRCC oncogenesis are not well understood. To better understand mechanisms of BAP1-mediated tumor suppression, I have extensively characterized the very early transcriptional mediators of BAP1 loss in a postnatal kidney-specific genetic knockout model. Because VHL loss is the initiating event in ccRCC, we modeled Bap1 loss in a Vhl-deficient background. I have found that Vhl/Bap1 double-knockout cells of PT segment S2 strongly activate …

Defining Replication-Driven Vulnerabilities In High Grade Serous Ovarian Cancers, Natasha Maya Ramakrishnan

Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations

High grade serous ovarian carcinoma (HGSOC) is an aggressive, highly lethal subtype of ovarian cancer. These cancers are typically diagnosed in later stages and are associated with poor patient prognosis. Additionally, HGSOC is characterized by numerous markers of genomic instability and defects in DNA repair pathways, vulnerabilities which have been exploited by the advancement of chemotherapy. Despite these clinical advancements, HGSOC remains a significant therapeutic challenge due to emergence of chemoresistance and limited targeted treatment options. Taken together, these factors highlight an ongoing need to study the development of HGSOC and its progression to identify more effective treatment opportunities. We …

Structure-Based Discovery Of Malate Dehydrogenase Inhibitors With Efficacy Against C. Parvum Oocysts, Ankita Bharatbhai Kheni

Biochemistry and Molecular Biology

Cryptosporidium parvum, the etiological agent of Cryptosporidiosis (diarrheal illness) represents a significant global health burden, particularly affecting immunodeficient and pediatric populations. Since the parasite has a highly reduced mitochondrion and relies on glycolysis, enzymes such as C. parvum malate dehydrogenase (CpMDH), which are believed to be indispensable for parasite viability due to their pivotal roles in NAD⁺ regeneration and redox balance, remain largely unexplored as therapeutic targets. The present study employed a multifaceted experimental and computational strategy to evaluate the inhibitory activity of two lead-like and drug-like small molecules, referred to as compound 1.8 and compound 1.5, against the cofactor …

Explaining Compassionate Release: A Machine Learning Study Of Sentencing Modifications & Judicial Decision Making, Max Alderman, Arash Barfar, Dana Edberg

Loyola of Los Angeles Law Review

In 2018, Congress passed the First Step Act, amending 18 U.S.C. § 3582(c)(1)(A) to permit federally incarcerated individuals to directly petition district courts for early release. In the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, thousands of individuals did so, citing staggering prison death rates and asserting that further incarceration unjustly imperiled their health. Largely unprepared for the deluge, district courts granted 25.7 percent of those petitions. Without precedent to guide them, their decisions were and remain highly discretionary, based on dozens of interrelated variables and legal factors. Those decisions are also largely insulated from appellate review.

The FSA’s amendments and the …

Community Forest Management And Its Impacts On Ecosystem Services And Livelihoods In Thua Thien Hue Province, Vietnam, Nguyen Ngoc Lan Chi, Le Thi Hoa Sen, Ho Le Phi Khanh, Guilhem Saget, Jennifer Bond

Forest and Society

This study explores the implementation of Community Forest Management (CFM) and its impacts on ecosystem services and the local livelihoods in Thua Thien Hue province. Through interviews with CFM households, non-CFM households and local representatives, it found that although CFM contributes positively to the enhancement of ecosystem services, limitations remain. Specifically, CFM payments only account for up to 10% of households' income and therefore activities such as patrolling tend to be left to older, non-earning household members. The study also found evidence of `reverse exclusion' where limiting CFM participation to poor households also limited the capacity of the group to …
