Religiousness And Adjustment In Dementia Caregivers., George David Allen
Religiousness And Adjustment In Dementia Caregivers., George David Allen
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
It was the aim of this dissertation to determine if and how religiousness in family members caring for relatives suffering from dementia affects the mental health of family caregivers. To that end two theories were presented for testing in the form of path models. These theories were based on stress-process cognitive theory as adapted to the dementia caregiver situation. In this theory caregiver strain (mental distress) was thought to be mediated by cognitive appraisal, and appraisal to be influenced by contextual characteristics, personal and family resources, and stressors. Model one proposed that intrinsic religious orientation would mediate between the burdens …
A Qualitative Assessment Of Spirituality And Its Impact On The Final Life Stage For A Sample Of Older Adults., Robert P. Heck
A Qualitative Assessment Of Spirituality And Its Impact On The Final Life Stage For A Sample Of Older Adults., Robert P. Heck
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The problem being addressed through this study is the need to adequately understand the significance of the spiritual experience for older adults, especially as related to their resolution of the final life stage of integrity versus despair as conceptualized by Erikson (1963). Qualitative research methods were utilized to conduct and analyze structured interviews with six older adults. Interview questions were validated by past research efforts on spirituality and on integrity versus despair. Research questions addressed in this investigation include the following: (a) Does Erikson's theory of integrity versus despair adequately explain the data and provide an appropriate framework for conceptualizing …

Attitudes Toward Aging Lesbians: An Exploratory Study, Karen E. Cunningham
Attitudes Toward Aging Lesbians: An Exploratory Study, Karen E. Cunningham
Dissertations and Theses @ UNI
The purpose of this study was to examine the attitudes of midwestern college students toward older lesbians. It is hypothesized, due to the commonly held assumptions that older women are "asexual" and that the popular image of homosexuals is extremely negative, that the lesbian identity will go unrecognized by others outside of those to whom they have disclosed their sexual orientation. Variables considered in this study include: (a) knowledge of aging and (b) attitudes toward homosexuality. Two hundred and fifty midwestern college students completed questionnaires that assessed their attitudes toward lesbians, their knowledge of aging, and their attitudes toward aging …
Locus Of Control And Self-Directed Learning As Predictors Of Well-Being In The Elderly, Deborah Gardner
Locus Of Control And Self-Directed Learning As Predictors Of Well-Being In The Elderly, Deborah Gardner
Theses : Honours
Elderly people who remain mentally and physically active are more likely to be happy than those who do not (George, 1980; Toscland & Sykes, I 977). Demographic factors have usually accounted for only a small amount of the variance in well-being (Diener, 1984 ). Internal control, personal growth and direction in life might have more to do with well-being than demographic or personality factors (Ryff, 1995). This study examined the theoretical relationship between locus of control and self-directed learning readiness in the elderly and the predictability of self reported well-being from an internal locus of control and a self-directed learning …
A Patient Management Program: The Evaluation Of A Combined Pre-Admission And Early Discharge Program, Lorna Rogers
A Patient Management Program: The Evaluation Of A Combined Pre-Admission And Early Discharge Program, Lorna Rogers
Theses: Doctorates and Masters
The purpose of this descriptive study was to describe the evaluation of a 'Patient Management Program'. This managed care type of program combined a Pre-Admission Clinic and an Early Discharge Program. It was established as a twelve month pilot program at a major Western Australian public teaching hospital in January 1995. It aimed to provide a more efficient health service by replacing part of elective surgical patients' inpatient care with outpatient services. The first component of the Program was the Pre-Admission Clinic, which allowed patients to undergo pre-operative assessment and testing prior to admission to hospital, thus facilitating same day …
