Management Needs And Development Of Nursing Administrators In The Long Term Care Industry, Myrtle Jean Darnell
Management Needs And Development Of Nursing Administrators In The Long Term Care Industry, Myrtle Jean Darnell
Theses
This thesis will focus on the role of the nursing administrator in long-term care in the past, at present, and the requirements for the future. The major emphasis will be to focus on the educational needs required for the nursing administrators to function effectively in their role as top nursing leader of the facility.
There are many external forces affecting long-term care facilities: early discharges from hospitals result in sicker residents in the nursing home, a case mix prospective payment system is being piloted for rollout to all fifty states, and managed care enrollment is increasing for the Medicare population, …
Cost-Effectiveness Of Activities In Extended-Care Facilities, Nancy Marie Knapp
Cost-Effectiveness Of Activities In Extended-Care Facilities, Nancy Marie Knapp
Theses
The purpose of this project is to evaluate the cost-effectiveness of activities in extended-care facilities. The life expectancy of older adults and housing options is presented in the introduction to this project. A literature review highlights the need for activities to maintain and restore the health of older adults in extended-care facilities. The literature shows that activities help to meet the physical, emotional, and spiritual needs of older adults. Meeting these needs leads to life satisfaction for the residents in extended-care facilities. The importance of evaluation in determining the cost-effectiveness of activities in extended-care facilities is also presented in the …

Positive Effects Of Modernization On Later Life, Wing Kin, Kenneth Law
Positive Effects Of Modernization On Later Life, Wing Kin, Kenneth Law
Centre for Public Policy Studies : CPPS Working Paper Series
Early gerontological theories (e.g., role theory, subculture theory, disengagement theory, activity theory and modernization theory) on the study of the elderly used to concentrate on the discussion of the effects of various kinds of social change on individuals' later life adaptation. Modernization has conventionally been perceived as a bad dream for most elderly people. It is the modernization which deskills them, devalues their experiences, take away their authority, ... and finally leaves them in misery.
The validity and applicability of this simple relationship between modernization and the misery of later life as a result of the decline of social status …

A Comparison Of The Knowledge, Misconceptions, And Attitudes Toward The Elderly Of First Versus Final Year Students In Accredited Physical Therapy Programs, Christina J. Fleming, Mark A. Kandes, Jennifer E. Shultz
Masters Theses
Physical therapy is one of the many professions that must respond to the increase of health care utilization by the rapidly growing elderly population. The purposes of this cross-sectional study were to compare first and final year physical therapy students’ knowledge, misconceptions, and attitudes toward the elderly and to determine if knowledge correlates with attitudes. Students in their first year (N=168) and final year (N=149) of accredited Master’s level physical therapy programs were surveyed. Questionnaires consisted of: a short demographic sheet, Palmore’s Facts on Aging Quiz 1 with a “don’t know” response added, and a modified Aging Semantic Differential by …
The Relationship Between Chronic Alcohol Abuse And Information Processing Ability In Older Adults, Christopher P. Bertram
The Relationship Between Chronic Alcohol Abuse And Information Processing Ability In Older Adults, Christopher P. Bertram
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
The issue of alcohol use and abuse among older adults is one that is gaining attention in current literature. Although it is an important issue, empirical evidence within the domain of alcohol, aging, and cognition, is sparse. Thus, the proposed preliminary study was designed to examine the relationship between chronic alcohol consumption and information processing speed in older adults. Eight matched participants (4 per group, mean age 56 years) were divided into two groups: Alcoholic or non-alcoholic. Participants were assigned to their respective group and matched based on the information provided on a health questionnaire. All participants completed a series …
Exercising Authority: A Critical History Of Exercise Messages In Popular Magazines, 1925-1968, Dahn Edward Shaulis
Exercising Authority: A Critical History Of Exercise Messages In Popular Magazines, 1925-1968, Dahn Edward Shaulis
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to analyze exercise messages in American popular magazines. A critical perspective and historical sociological methods were used to examine more than 500 magazine articles published from 1925 to 1968. A common factor in many articles was the use of ideology mixes. Magazines used biomedicalization, materialism, nationalism, and patriarchy in several combinations to authorize restrictive exercise norms. Exercise norms were stratified by age, class, gender, and race, but changing ideology mixes and exercise norms often reflected changes in society. Biomedicalization authorized doctors as gatekeepers. It prescribed moderate activity for affluent men, but discouraged vigorous exercise …
Pro-Work Policy Proposals For Older Americans In The 21st Century, Richard V. Burkhauser, Joseph F. Quinn
Pro-Work Policy Proposals For Older Americans In The 21st Century, Richard V. Burkhauser, Joseph F. Quinn
Center for Policy Research
Reports that the Social Security Trust Fund will be exhausted sometime in the early part of the next century reinforce the need to make retirement policy in the United States more accommodating for those who want to work. While there is general agreement that disincentives to work at older ages in both Social Security and employer pension plans played an important role in the dramatic drop in retirement age from 1945 through 1985, skepticism exists over the ability of policy changes to both stop this trend and increase work at older ages. In this policy brief we summarize how government …
The Changing Economic Circumstances Of The Elderly: Income, Wealth, And Social Security, James P. Smith
The Changing Economic Circumstances Of The Elderly: Income, Wealth, And Social Security, James P. Smith
Center for Policy Research
How is the economic status of the elderly changing and what are their prospects for the future? My portrait tells us how well off they are on average, but also about the vast disparities that exist among them. This description includes an often neglected measure of their economic well-being--the amount of wealth they control. Amazingly little is known about how much personal wealth older people have and how and what determines its distribution. But the conventional definition of household wealth ignores two critical components of wealth: the expected income flows from pensions and Social Security. For some elderly households, Social …

Death, Dying, And End-Of-Life Care: Nurse Educators' Prescription For Nursing Education, Carmencita C. Mercado-Poe
Death, Dying, And End-Of-Life Care: Nurse Educators' Prescription For Nursing Education, Carmencita C. Mercado-Poe
Theses and Dissertations
Education on death, dying, bereavement, and end-of-life care is a vital component of the basic preparation of the registered nurse. Yet, practicing nurses continue to report that programs offered in nursing schools do not prepare them adequately to provide comprehensive care to the dying. An explanation given in the literature is that some nurse educators do not value the inclusion of death education in the nursing curriculum. These educators argue that the current curricula are already too full and that skills related to the care of the dying are not as important as life-sustaining skills. They believe that skills related …

Sociological Variables Affecting Clinical Issues: A Comparison Of Graduate Distance Education Sites, Billy P. Blodgett, Ellen E. Whipple
Clinical Sociology Review
This study examined the differences between students residing in urban and rural areas while enrolled in a graduate practice methods course taught via two-way interactive television. A questionnaire was administered to sixty-six students which assessed sociodemographic characteristics, current practice topics, practice approaches, and diversity issues. Rural offcampus students were found to reside in significantly smaller communities than the urban-based university campus students, and viewed several clinical issues as having more relevance to their future practice. Further, on-campus students were significantly younger than their rural counterparts, were more ethnically diverse, and placed more emphasis on the relevance of course material to …

Religiousness And Adjustment In Dementia Caregivers., George David Allen
Religiousness And Adjustment In Dementia Caregivers., George David Allen
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
It was the aim of this dissertation to determine if and how religiousness in family members caring for relatives suffering from dementia affects the mental health of family caregivers. To that end two theories were presented for testing in the form of path models. These theories were based on stress-process cognitive theory as adapted to the dementia caregiver situation. In this theory caregiver strain (mental distress) was thought to be mediated by cognitive appraisal, and appraisal to be influenced by contextual characteristics, personal and family resources, and stressors. Model one proposed that intrinsic religious orientation would mediate between the burdens …
