Perceptions Of Importance And Performance: A Study Of University Of Nevada, Las Vegas Hotel College Master's Alumni, Michael F Lamb
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
The purpose of this research was to analyze the graduate program in the William F. Harrah College of Hotel Administration at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas with regard to its success in preparing Master's graduates for careers in the hospitality industry. All graduates of the program's 13 year history were surveyed through the mail and 58% returned valid surveys. Respondents were asked to render opinions as to the relative importance 46 competencies had on their professions. The alumni were then asked to evaluate those same competencies on the basis of how well UNLV taught the skills; The responses were …
Habitat Patch Dynamics Of Desert Bighorn Sheep Ovis Canadensis Nelsoni In The Eastern Mojave Desert, Darren Del Divine
Habitat Patch Dynamics Of Desert Bighorn Sheep Ovis Canadensis Nelsoni In The Eastern Mojave Desert, Darren Del Divine
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
The individual chapters of this Dissertation were designed to examine desert bighorn habitat, and the disjunct nature of that habitat. The findings of the first chapter illustrated that although 30 m elevation data yielded a more accurate depiction of the landscape, 100 m data was still adequate for determining habitat quality. The second chapter illustrated that the traditional bighorn habitat model was inadequate when applied to four Eastern Mojave Desert mountain ranges because of its unrealistic distance to permanent water requirement. It was also determined that a single habitat definition could not be formulated that worked equally well on all …

A Matter Of Faith: A Study Of The Muddy Mission, Monique Elaine Kimball
A Matter Of Faith: A Study Of The Muddy Mission, Monique Elaine Kimball
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
Leonard J. Arrington wrote about the Mormon development of the Great Basin from 1847 to 1900 in Great Basin Kingdom (1966). He summarized Mormon economic ideals in seven principles which served as the basis of his argument about their success in the Great Basin; The Muddy Mission, established on the Muddy River (Nevada) in 1865, served three purposes, foremost was cotton production. Church leaders believed that the successes experienced in Utah would be repeated in the southern regions. Unfortunately, by 1871 politics and economics ended any successes the Muddy Mission had; Arrington's principles represent a Mormon's ethnographic statement about the …

Open Access Master's Theses
A real time geographic information system (RTGIS) toolbox has been designed and implemented to assist in all phases of an oceanographic survey; including pre-cruise planning, data acquisition, survey monitoring, post-cruise report generation, data processing, and data archiving. The RTGIS Toolbox is a software system, written mainly in C and shell scripts, with interfaces to data acquisition hardware; such as DGPS, LORAN, gyro compass, echo sounder, sidescan sonar, and multibeam sonar. At the core of the RTGIS Toolbox is the public domain geographical information system (GIS) GRASS4.1. The functional capabilities of GRASS4.1 are augmented with a suite of peripheral public domain …
Nature, Culture And Big Old Trees: Human Relationships With Ceiba (Ceiba Pentandra) And Live Oak (Quercus Virginiana) In The Landscapes Of Guatemala And Louisiana., Katharine Anderson
Nature, Culture And Big Old Trees: Human Relationships With Ceiba (Ceiba Pentandra) And Live Oak (Quercus Virginiana) In The Landscapes Of Guatemala And Louisiana., Katharine Anderson
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
The ceiba in Guatemala and the live oak in Louisiana are examples of two trees that attain great size and age within the cultural landscape. Humans have adopted both as symbolic trees; they protect, encourage and even plant them. As the trees age, they become historic landmarks, are indicators of important places, and give character to the landscape. Although each tree is native within portions of each study area, both have taken advantage of human disturbance to expand beyond their original habitats. In addition, they have been moved deliberately by humans to new areas well beyond their geographical limits. Other …
Moved By The Spirit: Protestant Diffusion And Church Location In Central America, With A Case Study From Southwestern Honduras., Terri Shawn Mitchell
Moved By The Spirit: Protestant Diffusion And Church Location In Central America, With A Case Study From Southwestern Honduras., Terri Shawn Mitchell
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
This dissertation traces the evolution of Protestant missions in Central America from the colonial period to the present, focusing on the agents, direction, and methods of Protestant diffusion as well as the changing criteria for site selection. Chapters are arranged chronologically and progress from the macro-scale, Central America, to the micro-scale, six towns in southwestern Honduras (La Esperanza, Intibuca, Yamaranguila, San Juan, Erandique and Gracias). The chapters dealing with Central America outline when and where different mission boards have worked, as well as the geographical, economic, political and theological considerations driving site selection. The focus then narrows to patterns of …

Visualizing Autobiography: Intersections Of Gender, Representation, Curriculum Theory., Anne Elizabeth Pautz
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Defined by customs of femininity, women who transcend those definitions find it difficult to represent themselves in a comprehensible manner. The contradictions between the actual activities of life and the demands of femininity require woman to adopt unique approaches to self-representation in order to be accepted. Tied to the biological functions of their bodies through images in the media and social institutions, as well as their internalized images, women often find trying to represent themselves beyond or against their body problematic. The female body is presented as controller of destiny, both through beauty and motherhood requirements. Women often create representations …
Ephemeral Hinterlands And The Historical Geography Of Trujillo, Honduras, 1525-1950., Taylor E. Mack
Ephemeral Hinterlands And The Historical Geography Of Trujillo, Honduras, 1525-1950., Taylor E. Mack
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
The historical geography of Trujillo, Honduras is told through its changing hinterlands. This dissertation uses world systems to approach and understand the historical geography of Trujillo, however, the focus is on this peripheral area of the world system, rather than on the core. The coast of the western Caribbean experiences economic boom and bust cycles. The periodization of Trujillo's historical geography is based on the city's boom and bust periods, using primary documents from archives in Central America and Spain. Trujillo's first boom period lasted from its founding in 1525 until 1550, based on gold exports from the interior. During …

The Prism Of Laughter: Antebellum Humorists In Regional Perspective., Henry O. Robertson Jr
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
This work revises earlier interpretations of antebellum American humorists and sets forth a new model for understanding their accomplishments. Rooted in historical thinking, this study integrated biography, publishing history, critical responses, and a penetrating analysis of the sketches of several major figures. The first third examined Seba Smith, Joseph C. Neal, and Augustus Baldwin Longstreet. A devotion to their communities in Maine, Philadelphia, and Georgia, respectively, and preference for writing warm, genial selections remained important shared influences while cultural differences between the societies in which each matured and wrote made their humor diverge significantly. In both content and expression their …

Indigenous Lands In A Developing Region: A Historical Ethnogeography Of The Pech Indians Of Eastern Honduras, With Emphasis On Recent Settlement And Land Use Changes., James Richard Samson
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Since before Spanish Contact, the Pech Indians have occupied a large portion of northeastern Honduras. Like other native American populations, they have suffered significant territorial reductions and cultural alterations at the hands of European colonists and modern ladino immigrants. Utilizing the methodologies of cultural geography, ethnohistory, and ethnogeography, the Pech, formerly known as the Paya, are scrutinized to illustrate the process by which indigenous peoples are reduced and incorporated into a developing national setting. Part One examines the scholarly record on the ethnohistory of the Pech and their neighbors to delimit their habitats and to document Pech incorporation into the …

The Impact Of Technological Change On The Economic Viability Of Individual Production Centers: The Case Of The 1840-1880 British Ocean-Going Iron And Steam Shipbuilding Industry., Daniel Stephen Allen
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
This dissertation examines the relationship between technological change and spatial industrial restructuring through a case study of the 1840-1880 British ocean-going iron and steam shipbuilding industry. The study tests the hypothesis that a shipbuilding center's share of the national British shipbuilding market was associated with its ability to generate or rapidly adopt technological change. The study begins by establishing iron steamship technological changes introduced by British shipbuilders and the industry's attendant spatial restructuring It then develops two site-specific variables: industrial viability and innovative ability. Data for both variables are obtained from the Lloyds Register of British and Foreign Shipping. The …

The Effects Of The Louisiana Systemic Initiative Project On Two Rural School Districts In Louisiana., Tanya Maria Jones
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
This study provides a description and analysis of the effects of a mathematics reform initiative on classrooms in two rural communities. It describes the sites, details interactions that take place in the classroom, and enumerates teachers' perceptions of the change. A mixed methodology was used to support the findings. Qualitative data were collected through classroom observations and interviews and quantitative data were gathered through questionnaires. Quantitative results indicated that teachers who participate in the training have the opportunity to learn more about new teaching strategies in mathematics and are likely to change their teaching practices in mathematics. Findings reflected that …

Suburbanization Of Office Space: A Case Study Of Houston, Texas., Dmitry Vadimovich Mesyanzhinov
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Since the 1950s, the service sector of the U.S. economy has experienced remarkable growth. Significantly, new jobs in business and professional services and in similar information-processing occupations required new workplaces. Consequently, thousands of office complexes were built in American cities. Displaying a clean break with the past trend, the majority of the new office complexes were constructed in suburban locations, outside the CBDs of most major cities. The purpose of this research is to investigate the relationships between office complexes and urban labor markets/urban spatial structure. The scope of the empirical work is confined to office suburbanization in Houston, Texas …

A Monte Carlo Model Of Uncertainty In A Deterministic Hazardous Waste Transportation Risk Assessment, Michael A. Cowen
A Monte Carlo Model Of Uncertainty In A Deterministic Hazardous Waste Transportation Risk Assessment, Michael A. Cowen
Masters Theses
This thesis is aimed at developing and applying advanced modeling tools in the prediction of risk to the general public from transportation of chemical waste on public highways. The modeling tools developed can then be used to compare alternative waste management scenarios. The application considered is related to the transport of hazardous waste generated by the United States Department of Energy (DOE) to current treatment, storage, and disposal facilities. DOE is currently considering four different scenarios.
The application considered can be more specifically defined as an analysis of the risk to the general public from transporting the 63 shipments of …
The Geography Of Polynesians In Utah, Adam M. Frazier
The Geography Of Polynesians In Utah, Adam M. Frazier
Theses and Dissertations
This thesis explores the unique history and geography of Polynesians within Utah. In particular, the historic and current migrations of Hawaiians, Samoans, and Tongans to Utah are examined, and the 1980 and 1990 distributions of Polynesians are mapped and analyzed at three scales: in the United States by state, in Utah by county, and in Salt Lake City by census tract.
Historically, Polynesia's relationship with Utah has been religious, specifically of conversion to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints followed by migration to Utah. Today, however, things are changing. Nevertheless, Polynesians continue to migrate to Utah primarily for …

The Arrow Of The Law In Modern Administrative States: Using Complexity Theory To Reveal The Diminishing Returns And Increasing Risks The Burgeoning Of Law Poses To Society, J.B. Ruhl, Harold J. Ruhl Jr.
Vanderbilt Law School Faculty Publications
This article is the third in my series of articles exploring the application of complex adaptive systems (CAS) theory to legal systems. Building on the model outlined in the first two installments (in the Duke and Vanderbilt law reviews), this work examines the "arrow" or direction of the legal system in the context of the administrative state. Drawing from diverse work such as Burke's study of history's nonlinearity and Tainter's classic study of the collapse of complex civilizations, we argue that the administrative state is becoming too resource intensive and burdened by a proliferation of rules.
Thinking Of Environmental Law As A Complex Adaptive System: How To Clean Up The Environment By Making A Mess Of Environmental Law, J.B. A. Ruhl
Vanderbilt Law School Faculty Publications
This article is the fourth in my series of articles exploring the application of complex adaptive systems (CAS) theory to legal systems. It applies the model built in the three prior installments (in the Duke, Vanderbilt, and UC-Davis law reviews) to the specific context of environmental law. The work describes the subject matter of environmental law as a CAS and explains why environmental law thus must "think like a complex adaptive system" in order to accomplish its objectives.

Jane Aiken and Kimberly O'Leary undertake the difficult work of developing specific approaches and techniques for taking account of characteristics such as race/ethnicity, gender, dis/ability, and sexual identity in clinical pedagogy. Carolyn Grose uses outsider narratives and popular culture to challenge the "pre-understanding" of students, and to assist them to accept client stories as true and valid. Focusing on the professional value of striving to promote justice, fairness, and morality identified in the MacCrate Report, Professor Aiken exhorts us to promote justice by unmasking privilege, the invisible package of unearned assets--about which I (we? or you?) was "meant" to remain …
Making Constitutional Doctrine In A Realist Age, Victoria Nourse
Making Constitutional Doctrine In A Realist Age, Victoria Nourse
Georgetown Law Faculty Publications and Other Works
In this article the author considers three examples of modern constitutional doctrine that show how judges have stolen bits and pieces from popularized skepticisms about the job of judging and have molded this stolen rhetoric into doctrine. In the first example, she asks whether constitutional law's recent penchant for doctrinal rules based on "clear law" could have existed without the modern age's obsession with legal uncertainty. In the second, the author considers whether our contemporary rhetoric of constitutional "interests" and "expectations" reflects modern critiques of doctrine as failing to address social needs. In the third, she asks how an offhand …
