Landscape Cover-Type Modeling Using A Multi-Scale Thematic Mapper Mosaic, Collin G. Homer, R. Douglas Ramsey, Thomas C. Edwards Jr., Allan Falconer Jan 1997

Landscape Cover-Type Modeling Using A Multi-Scale Thematic Mapper Mosaic, Collin G. Homer, R. Douglas Ramsey, Thomas C. Edwards Jr., Allan Falconer

Wildland Resources Faculty Publications

Landscape ecological applications of remotely sensed data are needed over increasingly larger areas and at finer spatial scales. Within the framework of the National Biological Service Gap Analysis program, 36 Utah cover types were modeled from a state-wide Landsat TM mosaic created from 24 scenes at 30-metre resolution (219,883 sq km). The state was subset into three ecoregions for classification, with cover-type association to spectral classes defined using a two-step modeling approach. Steps included post-classification correlation of 1,758 state-wide field training sites to spectral classes, and post-classification ancillary GIS modeling using ecological parameters of elevation, slope, aspect, and location to …

Communicative Planning Theory And Community Initiatives, John Foley Jan 1997

Communicative Planning Theory And Community Initiatives, John Foley

College of Urban and Public Affairs (CUPA) Working Papers, 1991-2000

We evaluate lender discrimination during the mortgage default process. A telephone survey was conducted to evaluate the extent of lender discrimination in defaults that lead to foreclosure in New Orleans, Louisiana between 1985-1990. We use these data to estimate the independent effects of race and neighborhood characteristics on the extent of lender assistance or forbearance during the foreclosure process. Our analysis indicates that the proportion of black residents in the neighborhood where the property was foreclosed is a more significant predictor of forbearance than the race of the borrower. This is a foreboding indication of the possibility that recent gains …

Using Graphing Calculators To Integrate Mathematics And Science, J. Garofalo, F. Pullano

Journal of Mathematics and Science: Collaborative Explorations

The computational, graphing, statistical and programming capabilities of today’s graphing calculators make it possible for teachers and students to explore aspects of functions and investigate real-world situations in ways that were previously inaccessible because of computational constraints. Many of the features of graphing calculators can be used to integrate topics from mathematics and science. Here we provide a few illustrations of activities that use the graphing, parametric graphing, regression, and recursion features of graphing calculators to study mathematics in science contexts.

Reflections On The Economic Future Of Hong Kong, Ted Hagelin Jan 1997

Reflections On The Economic Future Of Hong Kong, Ted Hagelin

Vanderbilt Journal of Transnational Law

This Article assesses the economic future of Hong Kong after reunification with China. After reviewing Hong Kong's economic history, this Article discusses Hong Kong's present economic situation, and both the positive and negative influences on its economic future. The author identifies China's self-interest in Hong Kong's continued economic prosperity as a positive factor for Hong Kong's economy. China's self-interest stems largely from the recognition that Hong Kong's economic failure will impact China's politics, economics, and foreign relations. Negative developments within China, however, could lead to a precipitous downturn in Hong Kong's economy. Negative developments include potential military and political crises, …

Parasite Biodiversity And Emerging Pathogens: A Role For Systematics In Limiting Impacts On Genetic Resources, Eric P. Hoberg Jan 1997

Parasite Biodiversity And Emerging Pathogens: A Role For Systematics In Limiting Impacts On Genetic Resources, Eric P. Hoberg

Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Faculty Publications

Emergence of pathogenic organisms continues as a threat to overall biodiversity and genetic resources. Macroparasites including helminths constitute a potential threat to economically important resources in agriculture and conservation biology. Limitation of this threat can be achieved through survey and inventory for biodiversity and the application of systematics to understand the host range , biogeography and history of faunas. Systematics constitutes the foundation for recognition of endemic and introduced elements of faunas and the basis for predicting the behavior of pathogens introduced to new ecological settings or host groups. The basis for emergence of pathogens has both a deep historical …

The Geographic Contribution To Studies Of Pilgrimage: Introduction To Sacred Places, Sacred Spaces, Robert Stoddard, Alan Morinis Jan 1997

The Geographic Contribution To Studies Of Pilgrimage: Introduction To Sacred Places, Sacred Spaces, Robert Stoddard, Alan Morinis

Geography Program: Faculty Publications

The religions of humankind, from the great traditions of Islam, Christianity, Buddhism, and Hinduism, to sectarian cults arid tribal religions, have all singled out spatial referents as places that embody or enshrine the religious ideals of the culture. These sacred referents and the complex web of logistics, demographics, economics, and related activities that associate with the visitation patterns to such sacred places are the subject of this book.

Nearly Synchronous Climate Change In The Northern Hemisphere During The Last Glacial Termination, Larry V. Benson, James Burdett, Steve Lund, Michaele Kashgarian, Scott Mensing Jan 1997

Nearly Synchronous Climate Change In The Northern Hemisphere During The Last Glacial Termination, Larry V. Benson, James Burdett, Steve Lund, Michaele Kashgarian, Scott Mensing

United States Geological Survey: Staff Publications

The climate of the North Atlantic region underwent a series of abrupt cold/warm oscillations when the ice sheets of the Northern Hemisphere retreated during the last glacial termination (17,700–11,500 years ago). Evidence for these oscillations, which are recorded in European terrestrial sediments as the Oldest Dryas/Bølling/ Older Dryas/Allerød/Younger Dryas vegetational sequence, has been found in Greenland ice cores. The geographical extent of many of these oscillations is not well known, but the last major cold event (the Younger Dryas) seems to have been global in extent. Here we present evidence of four major oscillations in the hydrological balance of the …

Teaching Secondary School Geography With The Use Of A Geographical Information System (Gis), Angela Louise Crechiolo Jan 1997

Teaching Secondary School Geography With The Use Of A Geographical Information System (Gis), Angela Louise Crechiolo

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

Until quite recently, geographical information systems have been limited to the resources and students of post-secondary institutions. This situation is now changing in Ontario. In the early 1990's the Ministry of Education adopted mandates to develop curriculum guidelines for the integration of computers into all areas of the curriculum. Although the process is well underway in Ontario, limited access to hardware and software, insufficient pre-service and in-service training, and a paucity of teaching resources has lead to mounting teacher frustration. Although the literature base on teaching GIS at the pre-collegiate level is increasing, it lacks clearly defined examples of how …

Industrial Trade Shows: Their Role And Spatial Dimension In Industrial Restructuring, Andras Gosztonyi Jan 1997

Industrial Trade Shows: Their Role And Spatial Dimension In Industrial Restructuring, Andras Gosztonyi

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

The fundamental changes in the economic environment since the 1970s put firms under immense pressure to adjust their strategies to the increasingly dynamic and flexible global economy. The simultaneous upsurge in industrial trade show activity suggests that these events hold a central position in the process of restructuring. Therefore this study aims at theoretically examining the economic functions of trade shows and thus their role in economic restructuring. Yet, if trade shows are significant in industrial restructuring, it is important to learn about their spatial structure and thus their accessibility to firms in different countries and regions. This is carried …

Spatial Distribution Of Lead In Soil And Sediment In Iqaluit, Northwest Territories And Links With Human Health, Liisa Ann Peramaki Jan 1997

Spatial Distribution Of Lead In Soil And Sediment In Iqaluit, Northwest Territories And Links With Human Health, Liisa Ann Peramaki

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

The Baffin Regional Health Board has recently expressed concern over lead poisoning in Iqaluit, NWT, manifested by low haemoglobin levels in children. Several studies in temperate regions have demonstrated links between environmental lead and human health. However, little is known about these links in a permafrost environment. While humans are exposed to lead via a number of different pathways, soils and sediments are two major pathways. The purpose of this study is to determine the spatial distribution of soil and sediment-associated lead in Iqaluit and to assess probable pathways between high lead levels and children. The research hypothesis is that …

Fluid Patterns, Sediment Pathways And Woody Obstructions In The Pine River, Angus, Ontario, John T. Beebe Jan 1997

Fluid Patterns, Sediment Pathways And Woody Obstructions In The Pine River, Angus, Ontario, John T. Beebe

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

The objective of this research was to determine the effects that woody obstructions have on flow patterns and sediment pathways in a sand-bed river in Central Ontario. The Pine River near Angus, a tributary of the Nottawasaga River, was chosen because it contained a number of woody obstructions to flow from which to choose study sites. Two reaches, one containing a trunk oriented in the direction of flow, were chosen as the study reaches. Sampling of fluid speeds through the study reaches showed that the cross-stream obstruction acted to slow fluid as it approached and exited the obstruction zone, while …

Suggestions For Studying The Federal Appellate System, Carl W. Tobias Jan 1997

Suggestions For Studying The Federal Appellate System, Carl W. Tobias

Law Faculty Publications

The United States Congress recently authorized the appointment of a Commission on Structural Alternatives for the Federal Courts of Appeals. That entity has an historic opportunity to analyze carefully the federal appellate system and make valuable suggestions for improvement, thereby charting the destiny of the intermediate appeals courts for the twenty-first century. The creation of this new commission is important because now is a critical time for the appellate courts. All twelve regional circuits have experienced exponential docket growth but have possessed insufficient resources to treat the cases: this crisis of volume now seriously threatens the system.

This Article initially …

The Birds Of Perth's Urban Parks : Factors Influencing Their Distribution And Community Attitudes Towards Them, Jodi S. Mansell Jan 1997

The Birds Of Perth's Urban Parks : Factors Influencing Their Distribution And Community Attitudes Towards Them, Jodi S. Mansell

Theses : Honours

Knowledge of the general responses of bird populations to urbanisation and an understanding of their habitat requirements is necessary to ensure the continuation of bird life in urban areas. Most of the literature on urban birds around the world has concentrated on birds in streets and remnant patches. Urban parks provide much potential habitat for birds, although there are few publications addressing this issue. The aims of this project were to determine the terrestrial avifauna of Perth's northern suburban parks, investigate physical factors that might influence the distribution of birds, and determine the attitudes of park users towards birds in …

Managed Health Care Strategies Workshop, Unknown Jan 1997

Managed Health Care Strategies Workshop, Unknown

Native Health Database Full Text

In 1992, in an effort to redress the inconsistency that has been characteristic of federal policy applied to California, Congress established a statewide Indian council. The needs of California Indians in regards to health care are one part of the council's mandate. This is part in a series of reports by the council. This report discusses various aspects of tribal identity and culture, including issues that impact child welfare.
