Tokdo Or Takeshima? The Territorial Dispute Between Japan And The Republic Of Korea, Benjamin K. Sibbett Jan 1997

Tokdo Or Takeshima? The Territorial Dispute Between Japan And The Republic Of Korea, Benjamin K. Sibbett

Fordham International Law Journal

This Note analyzes Japan's and the Republic of Korea’s competing claims to Liancourt in light of traditional public international law, specifically the 1982 Convention and customary law found in past decisions by the International Court of Justice (“ICJ”) and arbitral bodies (collectively “international adjudicatory bodies”). Part I of this Note provides not only a brief historical overview on Japanese-Korean relations, but also a detailed review of relevant public international law. It outlines important provisions of the 1982 Convention, discusses widely-recognized means of territorial acquisition, and summarizes relevant decisions of international adjudicatory bodies. Part II examines each country's claim to Liancourt. …

The Status Of The Federal Republic Of Yugoslavia In The United Nations, Vladislav Jovanovic Jan 1997

The Status Of The Federal Republic Of Yugoslavia In The United Nations, Vladislav Jovanovic

Fordham International Law Journal

The status and position of the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia (“FRY”) in the United Nations (“UN”) is a controversial issue which has elicited many comments and articles and has cast a long shadow on the legality of the measures taken by the General Assembly (“GA”) and the Security Council (“SC”) vis-a-vis Yugoslavia. In 1992, the SC and the GA both decided that the FRY, composed of Serbia and Montenegro, could not participate in the work of the GA and its bodies. The GA further extended the prohibition against Yugoslavian participation to the Economic and Social Council and its bodies. Throughout …

Barriers In Traditional Ashanti Religion To Membership In The Seventh-Day Adventist Church, Amofah-Anane Asamoah Jan 1997

Barriers In Traditional Ashanti Religion To Membership In The Seventh-Day Adventist Church, Amofah-Anane Asamoah

Doctor of Ministry Projects

Problem

The persistence of traditional belief and practice among about 30 percent of Ashanti traditionalists presents a great challenge to the Ashanti SDA Church on how to engage the traditionalists' with the gospel. The darker side of the Ashanti world is characterized by fear and insecurity. While Christianity presents an attractive doctrine of salvation in a transcendent sense, its emissaries have failed to provide satisfying ways of dealing with the forces of the spirit world. In addition, the Ashanti institution of chieftaincy involves closely connected socio-political and religious rites. The chief is both the central officiant in rituals of tendence …

A Suggested Methodology For Establishing Evangelistic Contact With The Upper Classes In Jamaica, Denton W. Rhone Jan 1997

A Suggested Methodology For Establishing Evangelistic Contact With The Upper Classes In Jamaica, Denton W. Rhone

Doctor of Ministry Projects

Problem. The Seventh-day Adventist Church was established in Jamaica in 1903. Since then, the church has grown with membership totalling 162,831 by 1995. In 1995, there were 2,500,000 inhabitants in Jamaica, with 1 in 15 claiming to be a Seventh-day Adventist. Jamaicans can be divided into nine social classes; the Seventh-day Adventist Church has been successful in reaching mainly two of these classes, the poor and the lower-middle. Presently the SDA Church and the upper classes are insulated from each other. This dissertation suggests an approach to establish contact with the upper classes so that they can be reached with …

Estimating Local Lending Risk And Its Effect On Bank Asset Allocation., David John Sorenson Jan 1997

Estimating Local Lending Risk And Its Effect On Bank Asset Allocation., David John Sorenson

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Bank lending can have an important influence on local economic development. Banks have competing obligations, however, which compel them to look carefully at the riskiness of particular assets. This research addresses both lending risk assessment and the link between risk and lending by deriving risk measures based on industry mixes and testing whether differences in risk in local markets affect asset allocation. The research is both theoretical and empirical. The theoretical model of lending is based upon imperfect markets, risk aversion, and cost differentials. The model is extended to group banking to provide insight into the effects of diversification on …

The Ecology Of Darters In The Elk River, West Virginia., Stuart Andrew Welsh Jan 1997

The Ecology Of Darters In The Elk River, West Virginia., Stuart Andrew Welsh

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The darter fauna in the Elk River, West Virginia, is extremely diverse (18 species); however, few studies exist on its ecology. This dissertation, which consists of three manuscripts, provides data on the ecology of darters within the Elk River. In the first manuscript, I estimated allozyme variation in the Tippecanoe (Etheostoma tippecanoe) and golden (Etheostoma denoncourti) darters, fishes with extremely fragmented distributions. Despite our findings of low variation at 22 loci, frequency differences at Pgm and Pgdh separated E. tippecanoe and E. denoncourti. The second manuscript is a study of microhabitat use and partitioning in ten darter species. While snorkeling, …

Attitudes Of Japanese Ski Tour Operators Toward Western U.S. Ski Resorts, Sachi Sawamura, Daniel D. Mclean

Visions in Leisure and Business

The study was designed to provide important information about the Japanese ski market to U.S. ski resort marketers. One hundred-forty tour operating professionals responded to the survey. The perceived promotional activity level of Japanese tour operating companies toward U.S. ski destinations was found to be neither active nor inactive. The level of knowledge Japanese tour operating professionals have of U.S. ski resorts was found to be limited. There was a significant relationship between how they perceived their companies' promotion activity level toward U.S. ski tour packages and how well the same professionals knew these ski destinations. There was also a …

Vybrané Teoretické Interpretace Současné Transformace Kapitalismu (Selected Theoretical Interpretations Of The Contemporary Transition Of Capitalism), Petr Pavlinek

Geography and Geology Faculty Publications

Současná transformace kapitalismu začala na konci šedesátých a začátku sedmdesátých let dvacátého století.

The contemporary transition of capitalism is changing the nature of the capitalist economic and social system. This paper focuses on the debate around the alleged transition from Fordism to post-Fordism. It identifies and critically evaluates four Western schools of thought engaged in this debate: Schumpeterian and neo-Schumpeterian …

Strategies For Sprinkling Spice On An Elementary Physical Education Program: Thematic Instruction Comes To The Gym!, Kristine Lee Whitcher Jan 1997

Strategies For Sprinkling Spice On An Elementary Physical Education Program: Thematic Instruction Comes To The Gym!, Kristine Lee Whitcher

Graduate Research Papers

The purpose of this project was to identify curriculum design strategies that would assist elementary physical education teachers in producing thematic units for elementary physical education classes. Strategies for integrating curriculum were identified in the literature then used to create and implement a thematic physical education project. Specific strategies were explained in detail through examples associated with the project. The strategies demonstrate that thematic instruction can successfully meet the needs of many children, invite new learning, and will assist teachers in coordinating themes with elementary physical education classes. A school-wide Olympic Fest was the culminating event of this project. There …

This study describes the browse, analytical and hierarchical search features commonly found in seven electronic encyclopedias. The study found that browse search features are a linear index of titles or subjects, analytical search features offer simple and complex options while the software searches full text, and hierarchical search features offer subject breakdown from broad categories to specific articles. Common trends and variations are described through the use of text, screen shots and tables.

Walter Macken: Life In Literature, Megan Lyn Denio Jan 1997

Walter Macken: Life In Literature, Megan Lyn Denio

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Walter Macken: Life in Literature introduces Walter Macken, a Galwegian novelist, playwright, short-story writer, and children's novelist, to an American audience in order to make his works better known. The themes in Macken's novels show common elements among Irish authors. The use of the common man and the use of Ireland's history are most prevalent in Irish literature. However, Macken's use of autobiographical elements in the midst of his presentation of life in the West of Ireland, in many ways, sets him apart from the other Irish authors. Few have chronicled the lives of the farmers and the fishermen in …

Educational Reform Through The Implementation Of National Standards: A Response, Richard J. Reynolds Jan 1997

Educational Reform Through The Implementation Of National Standards: A Response, Richard J. Reynolds

Mid-Western Educational Researcher

At this writing, federal initiatives for education reform seem to be taking their last gasps. There is a question as to whether Goals 2000 will make it to the year 2000. The development of voluntary, national standards has generated considerable debate both as to the desirability of such standards and the enlarged federal role in education. What is killing these initiatives and are they worth saving?
