The Forgotten Legacy Of Bernard Mandeville, Bret T. Tuley Jan 1997

The Forgotten Legacy Of Bernard Mandeville, Bret T. Tuley

Draftings In

Bernard de Mandeville, an eighteenth century Dutch radical thinker, was widely condemned in his day for his views, but is important to us today because many of his ideas have had an influence on subsequent economic thought. Mandeville (1670-1733) was a precursor to Adam Smith, who has been clubbed the father of classical economics. Contrary to popular belief, it was Mandeville and not Smith who first described the seeming paradox that through individuals pursuing their own self-interests, the good of the public as a whole is increased. Also, Mandeville was one of the first proponents of free trade and specialization …

Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS

In her biographical portrait of Dr. Richard W. Pohl, Mrs. Pohl provides an engaging personal perspective of her late husband, his development as a botanist, his career, and his family life. We gain a sense of Dr. Pohl as a dedicated scientist as well as a humanist. Although Dr. Pohl possessed an abiding curiosity regarding all things natural, he is best known and remembered for his focus on grasses. As Mrs. Pohl documents, this interest in grasses began in the late 1930's and continued throughout his life-ultimately he was regarded as an authority on grass taxonomy both nationally and internationally. …

Funding Public Streetscape Improvements In A Heritage City: A Willingness To Pay Survey, John C. Crotts, Larry L. Mcnitt

Visions in Leisure and Business

How to finance downtown redevelopment activities can be problematic for city planners since the viability of .a plan to make improvements often rests with the willingness of merchants to pay for them. this article describes and illustrates two methodologies that are particularly well suited for such assessment purposes. The first is the contingent valuation survey methodology that elicits stakeholders' improvement priorities and their willingness to contribute towards those improvements. The second is the design charrette process that embellishes upon such survey results and invites further consensus building. Since the initial stage of a redevelopment project is at best speculative, these …
