Measurements consisting of blood pressure, heart rate, and respiratory rate …

Effects Of Academic Advisor Attire On Community College Student Satisfaction With Academic Advising, Rebecca Celeste Beck Jan 1997

Effects Of Academic Advisor Attire On Community College Student Satisfaction With Academic Advising, Rebecca Celeste Beck

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 1990 - 1999

The major purpose of this study was to determine if the attire of academic advisors would significantly affect students' satisfaction with their academic advisors. Academic advisors wore three types of attire: professional, casual, and a special uniform. The major concern was to determine if the student's first impression, as influenced by attire, of the academic advisor was significant in terms of satisfaction with the advising process. Data collected from 363 community college students were analyzed using analysis of variance (ANOVA). Based upon the statistical analyses, the researcher failed to reject all the null hypotheses. The attire of the academic advisors …

Effects Of Preoperative Teaching On Anxiety In Pediatric Ambulatory Surgical Patients, Shelley Mae Foord-Kelcey Jan 1997

Effects Of Preoperative Teaching On Anxiety In Pediatric Ambulatory Surgical Patients, Shelley Mae Foord-Kelcey

The purpose of the study was to test experimentally the effectiveness of a presurgical teaching intervention on reducing the anxiety of children undergoing outpatient surgery and in facilitating the children's emotional adjustment during the postsurgical period. The efficacy of a child teaching session combined with a parent teaching session was compared with the efficacy of a parent only session. The participants of the study were 33 children, ages 4 to 12, and their parents. Two weeks following the child's surgery, the parents assessed the child's postsurgical adjustment by completing the Post Hospital Behavior Questionnaire (PHBQ). Data was analyzed by t-test …

Electrochemical Double-Layer Capacitors Utilizing Low Surface Area Graphite Fibers, David Isaiah Zawacki Jan 1997

Electrochemical Double-Layer Capacitors Utilizing Low Surface Area Graphite Fibers, David Isaiah Zawacki

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 1990 - 1999

Electrochemical double-layer capacitors were constructed using low surface area carbon fibers that are commercially available. The fibers were made from polyacrylonitrile (PAN) and pitch and vary from low (LC = 14A, d002 = 3.54A) to high (LC = 169A, d002 = 3.40A) crystallinity. High energy densities (up to 7.83 Wh/kg) were obtained by electrochemically intercalating HSO4- ions between the graphene planes of the carbon fibers. The intercalation process was strongly influenced by the crystallinity of the carbon fiber and by the precursors from which the fiber was manufactured. All the pitch fibers had a higher structural order and a higher …

Embrittlement Susceptibility Of Corroded Pre-Stressing Steel In Concrete During Cathodic Polarization, Arnaud. Poeydomenge Jan 1997

Embrittlement Susceptibility Of Corroded Pre-Stressing Steel In Concrete During Cathodic Polarization, Arnaud. Poeydomenge

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 1990 - 1999

Experiments and analyses were performed to better define the limits of concern regarding hydrogen embrittlement in association with application of cathodic protection to prestressed concrete. To accomplish this, prestressed concrete specimens were locally corroded to different levels by anodic polarization and then polarized to -1.30 V SCE. A procedure of examination was developed using strain gauges to determine the level of prestrain. Relatively few brittle failures of wires resulted due, at least in part, to a relatively low prestrain of the pretensioned tendons. A model was developed which, coupled with data from parallel research, permitted definition of the minimum cross …

Empirical Study Of Farm Workers In South Florida: Environmental Injustice In The Fields?, Martha Celeste Murphy Jan 1997

Empirical Study Of Farm Workers In South Florida: Environmental Injustice In The Fields?, Martha Celeste Murphy

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 1990 - 1999

A Social Distance Model was developed for this dissertation to illustrate the marginalization of the migrant farm workers in South Florida. The social distance indicators used in the Social Distance Model are: (1) income level, (2) education level, (3) use of the dominant language, (4) property ownership, (5) laws and legal rights, and (6) race and ethnicity. These indicators demonstrate the marginalization of farm workers. This marginalization results in the creation of an occupational subgroup vulnerable to pesticide exposure, lack of protection under the law, and health problems. The four research questions which are used to illustrate this theoretical model …

Evaluation Of Shore Protection Measures Applied To Eroding Beaches In Florida, Luciana Slomp Esteves Jan 1997

Evaluation Of Shore Protection Measures Applied To Eroding Beaches In Florida, Luciana Slomp Esteves

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 1990 - 1999

Evaluations of shore erosion and protection in Florida are constrained by time and space. This study characterizes about 95% of Florida's beaches based on the degree of urban development, direction and rates of shoreline change, presence of sensitive ecological communities, and distribution of sea defense works. The 22 coastal-county maps prepared for this study show that approximately 195 km (16%) of Florida's beaches are eroding and 283 km (23%) are protected by engineering works. About 72% of eroded beaches are geographically associated with inlets. Sand management at inlets is crucial to improve erosion mitigation in Florida. Suggestions designed to enhance …

Female Identity In The Novels Of Marge Piercy, Darcy Dianne Gordon Jan 1997

Female Identity In The Novels Of Marge Piercy, Darcy Dianne Gordon

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 1990 - 1999

Women have traditionally formed their identity around standards created by a patriarchal society. In this way, they have often denied themselves autonomy and the process of self-discovery. With this knowledge, Marge Piercy through fiction re-imagines "the traditional female concern with personal relationships and the details of daily life and then expand (s) these concerns to include a wider and wider swath of human experience" (Snitow 719). Most of Piercy's novels intertwine politically motivated plots with female characters who reach a new conscious level of understanding about origins of identities, and thus these characters engage in an awareness that allows them …

For God And Country: W. T. Stead And The Beginnings Of The New Journalism In Victorian Britain, 1883-1885, Phillip Michael Guerty

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 1990 - 1999

Since the late nineteenth century, scholars and historians have attributed the growth of a sensational press in Britain to long-term societal changes such as the rise of capitalism. What has been ignored, however, is the importance of individual initiative, mainly that of W. T. Stead of the Pall Mall Gazette. During the Sudan Crisis of 1883-1885, Stead introduced a new type of journalism to England that combined typographical innovations, such as maps and striking headlines, with a lively literary style. At the root of this new type of reporting were Stead's deep-felt convictions about spreading Christianity, extending the empire, and …

Image Ratioing As Appropriate Technology For Monitoring Vegetation Cover In The Caribbean, Justine Louise Delahunty Jan 1997

Image Ratioing As Appropriate Technology For Monitoring Vegetation Cover In The Caribbean, Justine Louise Delahunty

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 1990 - 1999

Satellite image processing should not be dismissed as a tool to monitor vegetation cover because of cost concerns or classification problems due to topographic extremes. Low cost imagery and image processing software's are available and the image ratio technique can be used to minimize classification problems due to topography. The Forestry Division of St. Vincent island has minimum resources and the island's topography varies from sea level to 1,324 meters. The plight of the endemic, endangered St. Vincent Parrot (Amazona guildingii) was used as a case study. An appropriate habitat monitoring technique was formulated for the Forestry Division so that …

Of Characterization And Other Matters: Thoughts About Multiple Damages, G. Robert Blakey Jan 1997

Of Characterization And Other Matters: Thoughts About Multiple Damages, G. Robert Blakey

Journal Articles

Modern economic analysis owes too much to the conceit of Bentham and his followers in their arrogant reliance on disembodied reason. In fact, they have "shaped the course of law reform" for large segments of the modern world; unfortunately, they "neglected all the complex social evolution which ... [went into] the making of... [that] world and individuals" in it; and for that "reason..., they considered that the study of history was a matter of minor importance." Bentham and his many followers too often tend to rely on a handful of assumptions and reason alone–coupled with a veneer of mathematics–to describe …

Hope And Despair For A New South Africa: The Limits Of Rights Discourse, Makau Wa Mutua Jan 1997

Hope And Despair For A New South Africa: The Limits Of Rights Discourse, Makau Wa Mutua

Journal Articles

This article is a critique of the struggle to end apartheid in South Africa. It explores the assumptions employed by the African National Congress and the international community to construct a post-apartheid society. It argues that the reliance on the law as the key medium for economic, social, and political change was insufficient to transform the legacy of apartheid. Instead, the piece contends that apartheid was privatized and its beneficiaries protected under the new dispensation. It makes the argument that the lot of the black majority is unlikely to be changed such gradualist approach to social change.

Is This Appropriate?, Thomas L. Shaffer, Julia B. Meister Jan 1997

Is This Appropriate?, Thomas L. Shaffer, Julia B. Meister

Journal Articles

The word "appropriate" is so wildly overused in American culture that, as with other vacuous words and phrases, a person learns to read right through it. "Appropriate" is verbal tofu. This Essay pauses instead of reading through, particularly to notice the instances in which "appropriate" and its negative counterpart are used to give the appearance of a moral or legal judgment.

"Appropriate," chosen to express a legal judgment, is not only vacuous; it is also irresponsible. It catches the legislator, judge, or administrator in the act of passing the buck, as the President did when he ordered the Justice Department …
