Contract, Trust, And Resistance In The `Second Treatise', Rory J. Conces Jan 1997

Contract, Trust, And Resistance In The `Second Treatise', Rory J. Conces

Philosophy Faculty Publications

If there is a single problem that has dominated political thought for the past four hundred years, it is the tension within the body politic between the will of the collective, as it is expressed by those vested with authority and power, and the will of the individual. Among political theorists who have examined this problem, Thomas Hobbes and John Locke viewed this potentially ruinous tension in radically different ways. In his Leviathan, Hobbes presents the problem of how we are to conduct ourselves as a society, an apparent dilemma whose horns are anarchy and servile absolutism. Either we …

A Preferred Vision For Administering Secondary Schools : A Reflective Essay, Darla Jean Williams

Graduate Research Papers

This is an exciting time to be in education. The world has changed. Technology and the development of a global economy have played a part in this transformation. Reorganizing schools is of foremost importance to educators today. Schools have been affected significantly by these changes, and they will continue to evolve as we enter the 21st century. Childhood Physical Or Sexual Abuse As A Possible Indicator Of Subsequent Adult Anxiety Disorders, Lynn Merry Cornwell Jan 1997

Childhood Physical Or Sexual Abuse As A Possible Indicator Of Subsequent Adult Anxiety Disorders, Lynn Merry Cornwell

Graduate Research Papers

In recent years, there has been a growing acceptance that childhood physical and sexual abuse lead to higher rates of psychiatric morbidity in adulthood. Childhood abuse experiences have been reported to be highly prevalent among patients with anxiety disorders. Similarly, childhood incest victims have been found to suffer from a significantly higher rate of anxiety disorders in adulthood especially agoraphobia, than a non-victimized, matched comparison group. Epidemiology studies also support a relationship between childhood abuse and the subsequent development of anxiety disorders. Two separate community surveys found that childhood sexual victimization predicted the later onset of agoraphobia, obsessive-compulsive disorder, and …

Isabel Archer And Gertrudis (Tula): Women At The Turn-Of-The-Century Struggling For Freedom, Kathleen Ann Westerhaus

Honors Theses, 1963-2015

Isabel Archer, the protagonist of Henry James' The Portrait of a Lady, and Gertrudis (Tula), the protagonist of Miguel de Unamuno's La T’a Tula are strong, able-bodied women who must combat the restraints of a corseting society. James and Unamuno write with the same agenda to critique how the turn-of-the-century society affected the lives of women. Although heroic in their determination to live life, both Isabel and Gertrudis fall victim to the society that reveres freedom more than passion. If these women had been allowed to not only express their passions but live their love for Caspar Goodwood and …
