Novel Technique For The Retrieval Of Compressed Image And Video Databases, Pornvit. Saksobhavivat Jan 1997

Novel Technique For The Retrieval Of Compressed Image And Video Databases, Pornvit. Saksobhavivat

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 1990 - 1999

The classic methods in indexing image and video databases are either using keywords or analysis of color distribution. In the recent year, there is a new standard in image and video compression standard called JPEG and MPEG respectively. One of the basic operations of JPEG and MPEG is Discrete Cosine Transform (DCT). The human visual system is known to be very dependent on spatial frequency. The DCT has capability to provide a good approximation of the images' spatial frequency that is sensitive to human eyes. We take this advantage of DCT in indexing image and video databases. However, the two-dimensional …

Nurses' Attitudes Toward The Care Of The Attempted Suicide Patient, Jodie Demay Schmidt

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 1990 - 1999

This study explored the attitudes of emergency department nurses toward the care of the attempted suicide patient. The independent variables were the ages of nurses and their length of work experience in the emergency department. One-hundred and one surveys were collected from emergency department nurses employed in three Broward County hospitals. In general, there were no significant differences between the two study groups; however, variances did appear in several areas relating to knowledge about attempted suicide. The less experienced group and the younger group rated lower on these items. The nurses responding to this survey expressed generally favorable attitudes toward …

Oh, Fanny! What A Deep Voice You Have: Masculinist Narration In John Cleland's "Fanny Hill Or Memoirs Of A Woman Of Pleasure", Ilana. Cohen Jan 1997

Oh, Fanny! What A Deep Voice You Have: Masculinist Narration In John Cleland's "Fanny Hill Or Memoirs Of A Woman Of Pleasure", Ilana. Cohen

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 1990 - 1999

John Cleland, author of Fanny Hill or Memoirs of a Woman of Pleasure, employs a female narrative voice, but his novel reinforces traditional gender roles of male domination and female submission. By co-opting his female narrator, Cleland makes Fanny appear to be a willing and available sexual partner. His pornographic novel depicts sexual situations that raise virile men to the position of authority and devalue both men and women who are submissive, not "masculine." The most devalued and objectified character in the novel is Fanny herself, even though the novel portrays her as happy and satisfied.

These variables ranged from the GPA in grade eight, through the normal-curve-equivalent test scores in both math and reading from the Grade Ten Assessment Test (GTAT), and included several actual GPAs achieved in science and math courses at all three levels of difficulty in high school (Appendix A). The data set was …

Presence And Progression Of "Saudade" In The Poetry Of Rosalia De Castro, Ruth Waltrip Mccollum Jan 1997

Presence And Progression Of "Saudade" In The Poetry Of Rosalia De Castro, Ruth Waltrip Mccollum

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 1990 - 1999

Saudade, a sentiment similar to but stronger than the English word "melancholy," has been a subject of much interest on the Iberian peninsula for centuries, especially among Galician-Portuguese writers. Rosalia de Castro, a nineteenth-century poet and author from Galicia, is recognized as one of Spain's most talented writers, partly because of her ability to express the various phases of a sentiment which is so difficult to understand. In her poetry Castro skillfully describes the feelings of the Galician people and, in doing so, bares the depth of her own saudade. The loss of love and departure from one's homeland are …

Prayer And The Well-Being Of The Older Adult, Sandra Lee Clark Ragl

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 1990 - 1999

Using a purposive sample of older adults, a qualitative descriptive study was conducted to illuminate the influence of prayer on their well-being. Content analysis was the method used to discern this relationship. Through the analysis of eight stories two themes on the "notion" of prayer and a primary theme on the influence of prayer on the well-being of the older adult emerged. The themes of prayer that emerged were: prayer was a conversation with God and an intimate relationship with God that fostered trust and belief. The primary theme was that a relationship with God through prayer fosters a sense …

Recurring Vocabularies: Narrating Voices In "Anne John", "Jasmine", And "Middle Passage", Donna J. Schlosser

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 1990 - 1999

This thesis examines the first-person narrator's development of an autonomous identity, which is characterized by the individual's self-interest on the one hand and social engagement on the other, in the following novels: Jamaica Kincaid, Annie John (1983), Bharati Mukherjee, Jasmine (1989), and Charles Johnson, Middle Passage (1990). Examination focuses on autobiographical moments in which language discloses identity development as each narrator employs a unique vocabulary and rhetorical strategies to build and maintain autonomous identity, establish social relationships, and infuse life with personal and collective meaning. Production Of Meaning In A Gendered Environment: A Communication Study Of Nurses In Management, Lisa A. Summerlot Jan 1997

Production Of Meaning In A Gendered Environment: A Communication Study Of Nurses In Management, Lisa A. Summerlot

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 1990 - 1999

This study explores the ways in which female nurses in management negotiate their roles within the male dominated institutions of medicine and administration. Our culture provides to this highly gendered profession a dominant construction of unambiguous identities for both management and nursing. The principles of semiology and feminist media criticism are used to show that negotiation with dominant messages takes place in lived reality in ways that are very similar to the negotiation in which consumers of media texts engage. Nine interview transcripts of nurses in management positions were analyzed for evidence of negotiated decodings of dominant meanings. The analysis …

"Floating Realities": Multi-Dimensionality In T. S. Eliot's "The Love Song Of J. Alfred Prufrock", Monica Laine Lewman Jan 1997

"Floating Realities": Multi-Dimensionality In T. S. Eliot's "The Love Song Of J. Alfred Prufrock", Monica Laine Lewman

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 1990 - 1999

Concentrating on Eliot's "The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock," with M. L. Rosenthal's term "floating realities" as my starting point, I discuss how time and its malleable nature relates to Prufrock's "linear reality" and his "non-linear" "floating realities." Prufrock's "linear reality" is the external world of appearances and his internal psychological landscape. I then reveal the "floating realities" that are generated by Eliot's otherworldly allusions. Finally, I discuss chaos theory, another way to explore the poem's multi-dimensional nature.

All The Kaiser's Men: German Volunteers And The Great War, 1914-1918, Michael Brian Petersen Jan 1997

All The Kaiser's Men: German Volunteers And The Great War, 1914-1918, Michael Brian Petersen

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 1990 - 1999

Since its end, scholars and historians have viewed World War I primarily in terms of its impact upon the military and diplomatic spheres of European life and have also made attempts to determine responsibility for starting the war. What has been largely ignored is the plight of those who did the fighting--especially German volunteer soldiers. These young men enlisted in the war effort because of a concrete set of assumptions that were later radicalized during the war experience, which was characterized by seemingly endless labor and episodic periods of extreme violence. This transformation of beliefs had a profound impact upon …

Analysis Of The Utility Of A Normalized Difference Vegetation Index For Inventorying Urban Greenspace, Thomas J. Dobbs Jan 1997

Analysis Of The Utility Of A Normalized Difference Vegetation Index For Inventorying Urban Greenspace, Thomas J. Dobbs

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 1990 - 1999

Satellite derived vegetative data of urban areas is normally classified into several classes of trees, fields, grass and bare soil using unsupervised and supervised classification methods. Normalized Difference Vegetation Indexes (NDVI) have traditionally been applied to agricultural satellite images to assess the health and maturity of commercial crops. When a NDVI is used to examine urban vegetation, many discrete data values are generated which can be differentiated into meaningful vegetation classes.

Content Analysis Of Design Practices, Prerak Pradyumna Shah

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 1990 - 1999

A database based on best manufacturing practices documents is explored relative to the "design" component of such best practices. This content analysis study yields lexical maps of key terms. Maps are categorized depending on their node arrangement in the following main groups: Cyclic maps, Sequential maps, Spoke-patterned maps and Isolated maps. A comparative study of names selected by different naming algorithms helps us in establishing the relation between map patterns and naming algorithms. Super network and distributions maps generated from the same database are useful in defining relations among the different maps. This study outlines the overall structure of design …

'Delicious Riot Of Things': Aspects Of Discontinuity In "Tristram Shandy", William B. Gerard Jan 1997

'Delicious Riot Of Things': Aspects Of Discontinuity In "Tristram Shandy", William B. Gerard

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 1990 - 1999

Tristram Shandy is a famously formless text in which the "life and opinions" of the title character appear to spill forth from the narrator without a governing theme or structure. Chronology and plot are interrupted and re-ordered. Characters are defined as mere fragments of personality, "strokes of a pen"; objects are represented as broken, snarled, and discombobulated. The subtexts and digressive tales included within the novel are incomplete as well as disruptive of the larger whole. Sterne withholds the "complete" picture a conventional novel provides, and fragmentation becomes the prevailing motif of his book: the author's motley meaning lies hidden …

Domestic Sybil: Feminist Concerns In P. L. Travers's "Mary Poppins" And "Mary Poppins Comes Back", Donna M. Revtai Jan 1997

Domestic Sybil: Feminist Concerns In P. L. Travers's "Mary Poppins" And "Mary Poppins Comes Back", Donna M. Revtai

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 1990 - 1999

Certain elements in P. L. Travers's Mary Poppins (1934) and Mary Poppins Comes Back (1935) depict concerns that feminist critics deem important, such as mother figures, females as artists, women who exert power or lack it, female self-concepts, matrilineal connections and mother/child relationships. Travers sometimes treats these subjects ambiguously or ambivalently, but her attention to them indicates a riveting interest at the time. Her creative process whereby she projected childhood fantasies onto her ideal nanny, Mary Poppins, with whom she identified herself and others, relates to a feminine psychology. Travers's cyclic and web-like plots may link her to feminist aesthetics …

Echoes Of Wordsworth And Coleridge Resound In "The Accidental Tourist", Susan Clare Finger Jan 1997

Echoes Of Wordsworth And Coleridge Resound In "The Accidental Tourist", Susan Clare Finger

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 1990 - 1999

Anne Tyler, who lived a "Romantic" childhood in mountain-terrained communes of North Carolina, borrowed ideas from Wordsworth and Coleridge for her 1985 novel The Accidental Tourist. Reflections of these Romantic poets are seen primarily in images but are also seen in Tyler's simple writing style. Macon Leary, the protagonist of the novel, is a wandering writer who loves the English language, but struggles to communicate his feelings verbally, a reflection of Romantic ideology. Other motifs include home as a place abandoned as well as a refuge for the mind and body; the destructive and renewing powers of the city; physical …
