Or Else: Statutes Without Sanctions And The Doctrine Of Meaningful Interpretation, Christian Davis
Or Else: Statutes Without Sanctions And The Doctrine Of Meaningful Interpretation, Christian Davis
Washington and Lee Law Review Online
Mankind has been fashioning laws for millennia. And while the form and substance of laws vary widely across times and places, all laws are unified by a fundamental reality that transcends the particular legal and political institutions of the day. To put it simply: laws only work if someone is prepared to enforce them.
As arbiters of the American legal system, state and federal judges are aware that—in order for a law to have the conduct-influencing effect it was designed to have—it must be supported by some version of an “or else” clause, a punishment or penalty sufficient to dissuade …
Religion For The Un-Religious: The Nazis’ Use Of Religion Within The Third Reich, Shaun Theewis
Religion For The Un-Religious: The Nazis’ Use Of Religion Within The Third Reich, Shaun Theewis
Honors Theses
Alfred Rosenberg was born in Revel, Estonia. After moving to Munich in 1918, he became one of the founding members of the Nationalsozialistische Deutsche Arbeiterpartei [National-Socialist German Workers Party], NSDAP. In 1930, Rosenberg wrote one of his most influential publications, Der Mythus des 20. Jahrhunderts [The Myth of the 20th Century], which challenges the idea of organized religion. In this three part publication, Rosenberg established values based in German ethnonationalism, which would later amalgamate into a new religion based on neopaganist ideals. Nazi-era neopaganism is a religion rooted in blood, using the history of the Germanic and Nordic people to …
"Of Good Blood In Good Standing”: Nation-Building And The Politics Of Belonging In The Stockbridge-Munsee Community, Caleb Molseed
"Of Good Blood In Good Standing”: Nation-Building And The Politics Of Belonging In The Stockbridge-Munsee Community, Caleb Molseed
Honors Theses
Between 1734 and 1856, the Stockbridge Mohicans and Munsee Lenape endured five major displacements from their ancestral homelands in Massachusetts and New York to their present-day reservation in Wisconsin. Despite shifting federal structures and nation-to-nation policies, these two distinct peoples formed a unified political entity: the Stockbridge-Munsee Community. This thesis examines the colonial systems that enabled, complicated, and recorded how this community engaged in their own nation-building through their interpretation and production of religious, economic, and political documents. This documentary culture is highlighted by the exclusion of John Lewis from the nation following his 1856 killing of a fellow tribal …
Ud College Student Health Literacy And Well-Being, Olivia R. Upchurch
Ud College Student Health Literacy And Well-Being, Olivia R. Upchurch
Honors Theses
In my Honors Thesis Research Project, I studied University of Dayton (UD) students' health literacy and well-being. Well-being is a state of being comfortable and happy. It includes mental well-being and physical activity. Mental well-being is a state of positive psychological, social, and emotional health. Physical activity is bodily movement that promotes physical health. Health literacy is the ability of someone to understand and effectively use health information to make well-informed decisions regarding their health. This project is important because college represents a time when young adults begin to manage their well-being and healthcare independently from their parents or guardians. …
Language Barriers In The Healthcare System, Gulten Altunbulak, Rebecca King, Lee Ann Hoffman
Language Barriers In The Healthcare System, Gulten Altunbulak, Rebecca King, Lee Ann Hoffman
Spring 2026 OTD Capstone Symposium
Language barriers in healthcare negatively impact quality of care, patient satisfaction, and health equity, particularly among individuals with limited English proficiency (LEP). This capstone program aimed to develop and implement an occupational therapy communication protocol to address language barriers in a skilled nursing facility. A mixed-methods approach was used, including a pre-survey of staff, post-implementation interviews, and observational feedback to evaluate communication practices, interpreter use, and staff confidence. A total of 25 staff members completed the pre-survey, with additional insights gathered through interviews and observations following implementation. Interventions included staff education on interpreter services and culturally responsive care, along with …
“The Left Leg Is Not Well”: Identity, Economy, And Ability In Early Modern Drama, Emma D. Whaley
“The Left Leg Is Not Well”: Identity, Economy, And Ability In Early Modern Drama, Emma D. Whaley
Department of English: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
The human reality of the disabled experience often goes overlooked by scholars analyzing early modern literature. Most scholarship seems to interpret disability as metaphorical without examining the human who experiences it. In this paper, I will be examining disability in three early modern texts as literal and inquire into the realities of the disabled experience for the characters. A Larum for London, The Shoemaker’s Holiday, and The Fair Maid of the Exchange all prominently feature a disabled character—Stump, Ralph, and Cripple respectively. These characters offer a depth of personhood rarely examined in early modern literary scholarship, even in …
“Music Is The Instrument To Bring The Heart Of A Community Together”: Frederic Balazs And The Tucson Symphony Orchestra, 1952-66, Jackie Bodily Biggs
“Music Is The Instrument To Bring The Heart Of A Community Together”: Frederic Balazs And The Tucson Symphony Orchestra, 1952-66, Jackie Bodily Biggs
Theses and Dissertations
The audience for classical music is declining, according to data from the National Endowment for the Arts. In the face of such challenges, aspiring music professionals may find inspiration in the musicological illumination of pertinent historical case studies. This paper offers one such example via a foundational exploration of the musical career of Hungarian American violinist, conductor, and composer Frederic Balazs. Though lacking any dedicated scholarly literature to speak of, Balazs’s legacy as the first full-time conductor of the Tucson Symphony Orchestra (TSO) from 1952 to 1966 included establishing arts organizations and nourishing the classical tradition at its very grass …
Polynomial Invariant Observables And Finite-Dimensional Linear Representations, Chengcheng Tian
Polynomial Invariant Observables And Finite-Dimensional Linear Representations, Chengcheng Tian
Electrical and Systems Engineering Undergraduate Student Research
This project studies polynomial observables that are compatible with a lifted linear system and define invariant graphs of the form p = p(x). Such observables arise naturally in the context of Koopman theory and super-linearization, where one seeks finite-dimensional linear representations of nonlinear dynamics.
Starting from the invariance identity, we derive algebraic conditions that constrain the structure of admissible polynomials. In the two-dimensional case, a complete analysis shows that all nonlinear terms are forced to depend on a single direction determined by the control vector B. This leads to a canonical representation in which the observable takes the form of …
Euripides, Rhetoric, And The Sophists: Euripides’ Exhortation For Rhetoric And To Hear Each Other, Phillip Bonnes
Euripides, Rhetoric, And The Sophists: Euripides’ Exhortation For Rhetoric And To Hear Each Other, Phillip Bonnes
Honors Theses
From the fifth and fourth centuries B.C., professional teachers travelled throughout Greece, teaching a wide variety of subjects from music to grammar. One subject that these sophists taught earned massive notoriety for them and, consequently, their trade: rhetoric. Within Athenian democracy, this craft of speaking well to persuade others became both valuable for those who are politically active and dangerous for demagogues. Coinciding with this emerging art of rhetoric was the emergence of Athenian tragedy. These tragedies served to speak about and encourage reflection upon their own contemporary politics and culture. This paper explores how Euripides examines and encourages wariness …

Introduction – Artificial intelligence (AI) and algorithmic systems influence health workers’ access, interpretation, and action on clinical and public health information, positioning them as intermediaries between algorithmically mediated outputs and patients, communities, and decision makers. This study examines how AI and algorithmic literacy are conceptualized and measured among health workers through a digital health literacy (DHL) lens. Methods – Using Arksey and O’Malley’s scoping review framework, we searched Ovid MEDLINE, Ovid Embase, Scopus, IEEE Xplore, ACM Digital Library, Europe PMC, and arXiv for English language sources published between January 2020 and May 2025. Two reviewers screened records and extracted data …
Martin Tawney's Guide To The Middle Of Nowhere, Daniel D. Graham
Martin Tawney's Guide To The Middle Of Nowhere, Daniel D. Graham
English Honors Projects
Martin Tawney’s Guide to the Middle of Nowhere is a portion of a novel that parodies Akira Kurosawa’s 1961 samurai film Yojimbo. Yojimbo is a trickster narrative which drew influence from the noir genre and went on to influence other Westerns. This project turns that story into one about a travel writer who visits a town with two feuding hotels. The travel writer escalates the feud to create the story he wants to tell, but he loses control over it. The project explores what a trickster narrative looks like when the trickster cannot maintain their power over the story.
Probing The Disequilibrium Chemistry Of Two Late T-Dwarfs Using Planetary Intensity Code For Atmospheric Scattering, Crystal-Lynn Jacqueline Bartier
Probing The Disequilibrium Chemistry Of Two Late T-Dwarfs Using Planetary Intensity Code For Atmospheric Scattering, Crystal-Lynn Jacqueline Bartier
Theses and Dissertations
We have performed a detailed analysis of the atmospheric properties of two late-T type brown dwarfs, 2MASSI J0415195-093506 and 2MASS J05591914-140448. For each brown dwarfs, we combined the spectra of each brown dwarf from the ground at 1-2.5 µm, AKARI at 2.5-5 µm, and from the Spitzer Space Telescope at 5-15 µm. For this project, we are particularly interested in probing the extent of vertical mixing. For this analysis, we used the Planetary Intensity Code for Atmospheric Scattering (PICASO), which is a code that creates a radiative transfer model for a given set of atmospheric parameters. With PICASO we find …
The Relational Good Life: Entrepreneurship Education And Grounded Sumak Kawsay In Otavalo, Ecuador, Vanessa I. Lozano Hardman
The Relational Good Life: Entrepreneurship Education And Grounded Sumak Kawsay In Otavalo, Ecuador, Vanessa I. Lozano Hardman
Theses and Dissertations
Indigenous Kichwa communities in Ecuador’s Otavalo region have long participated in local and transnational markets, historically as mindalaes, specialized traders of the northern Andes. Yet in recent years, international development-oriented NGOs have framed entrepreneurship education as newly necessary for economic development. These approaches emphasize individualized narratives of vision, self-reliance, and growth, often characterizing Indigenous peoples as lacking entrepreneurial skills or the appropriate mindset. Drawing on ethnographic research with youth, mothers, and teachers at Saminay–El Legado, an agro- technical, intercultural bilingual secondary school (UECIB) in the parish of San José de Quichinche, this article examines how entrepreneurship education intersects with grounded …
Independent English Teaching In Brazil: A Case Study, Jade G. Gunca
Independent English Teaching In Brazil: A Case Study, Jade G. Gunca
Theses and Dissertations
This qualitative case study investigates the experiences and practices of successful independent English as a Foreign Language (EFL) teachers in Brazil who operate outside traditional schools and private language institutes. Rather than providing a broad descriptive profile, this study offers an in-depth examination of a small group of teachers. These educators frequently use social media platforms such as Instagram and Facebook to showcase communicative, personalized, and flexible instruction in response to growing learner demand. Although English is widely taught in Brazilian schools, persistent structural constraints often limit students’ development of communicative proficiency, prompting some learners to seek instruction from independent …
The Ninth Amendment And Natural Rights/Social Compact Theory: A Defense Of Fundamental Unenumerated Constitutional Rights In The Wake Of Dobbs, Joseph R. Guerra
The Ninth Amendment And Natural Rights/Social Compact Theory: A Defense Of Fundamental Unenumerated Constitutional Rights In The Wake Of Dobbs, Joseph R. Guerra
Duke Journal of Constitutional Law & Public Policy
In ruling that the Due Process Clause of the Fourteenth Amendment does not protect a right to an abortion, the Supreme Court's decision in Dobbs v. Jackson Women's Health Organization relied on reasoning that casts serious doubt on the continued validity of other unenumerated constitutional rights. According to Dobbs, unenumerated rights cannot be recognized unless they are deeply rooted in this Nation's history and traditions, and have long enjoyed legal protection. In ruling that a right to abortion failed this test, the Court asserted that its decision did not undermine other previously recognized unenumerated rights, such as rights to …
The Impact Of Normothermic Regional Perfusion Compared With Cold Storage On Warm Ischemia Time In Donation After Circulatory Death Organ Transplantation: A Scoping Review, Chris Turner
Student Works
ABSTRACT
2.Structured summary:
Background: Donation after circulatory death (DCD) has expanded the donor pool but introduces an inevitable period of warm ischemia that threatens graft viability. Preservation techniques such as normothermic regional perfusion (NRP) and static cold storage (SCS) aim to minimize this injury and improve transplant outcomes.
Objective: This scoping review identifies and synthesizes published evidence comparing NRP with SCS in DCD organ transplantation, focusing on their respective effects on warm ischemia time, graft function, and early post‑transplant outcomes.
Methods: Following the PRISMA‑ScR framework [23], searches were conducted in MEDLINE, PubMed, Embase, and Scopus for English‑language studies involving DCD …

The Lost Reader: Temptation, Free Will, And Morality In Paradise Lost And Undertale, Serena Hope Labello
The Lost Reader: Temptation, Free Will, And Morality In Paradise Lost And Undertale, Serena Hope Labello
Honors Theses
This paper demonstrates that video games expand on a reader’s literary experience and should be characterized as literary artifacts. My thesis research project explores free will and temptation as originally reflected in John Milton’s epic, Paradise Lost, and in Undertale, a 2015 video game where players change the trajectory of the game with their use of free will. Critics of both texts have commented on how the structure of the epic poem and the game place the reader or player in a position to make moral choices. Stanley Fish’s critique of Paradise Lost claims that the reader will fall to …
Real Horror: The Supernatural And Its Connection To Abuse In Late 20th Century Horror, John Sebastian
Real Horror: The Supernatural And Its Connection To Abuse In Late 20th Century Horror, John Sebastian
Honors Theses
Horror authors from the late 20th century explain the turmoil of domestic and childhood abuse through supernatural elements to represent the loss of autonomy of victims. Several horror authors from the late 20th century showcase abuse through the supernatural not to exploit the experiences of victims of abuse but allow for spaces for readers to encounter truly horrifying stories and process them. Works explored include Stephen King’s The Shining and Carrie, as well as Ira Levin’s Rosemary's Baby and William Peter Blatty’s The Exorcist.

Effects Of The Historical, Current, Social, And Political Influence Of White Supremacy On The Young, Black Male In Mobile, Alabama, Nicole Moore
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Research has shown the negative effects of White supremacy and its historical influence on societal and political factors in the United States. These negative effects include excessive aggression, hate, and violence toward and degradation of Blacks, Indigenous, and people of color that lead to physical and mental health issues, identity crises, and trauma. However, studies have not examined the specific effects of the influence of White supremacy on the daily life of young adult Black males who have attended community college in Mobile, Alabama. The purpose of this generic qualitative study was to identify the perceptions of such Black males …

The New Era Of Pulmonary Hypertension: The Dawn Of Disease Modification & Therapeutic Modalities, Noyan Ramazani, Lacey Barnes, Alex Wong, Divyansh Sharma, Aditi Singh, Kachon Lei
Department of Internal Medicine Faculty Research
Pulmonary hypertension (PH) can be defined as a mean pulmonary artery pressure (mPAP) greater than 20 mm Hg at rest during right heart catheterization (RHC). The reported prevalence of PH throughout the globe has been estimated to impact approximately 1% of the total population, with a majority of those afflicted being women more than men. Numerous etiologies give rise to the pathophysiology of PH, including heart disease (i.e., left-sided heart failure), lung diseases, and other unclear causes related to chronic stages and complications surrounding long-standing pulmonary thromboembolisms, side effects of certain medications, and genetic and environmental factors. Untreated PH can …
Domain-Specific Fine-Tuning Of Neural Machine Translation For Georgian Religious Texts, Jacob Brent Fisher
Domain-Specific Fine-Tuning Of Neural Machine Translation For Georgian Religious Texts, Jacob Brent Fisher
Theses and Dissertations
This thesis investigates whether domain-specific fine-tuning of a large multilingual neural machine translation model improves translation quality for English-to-Georgian religious text, a low-resource pair underserved by existing systems. Using the 1.3-billion-parameter NLLB-200 model as a baseline, two LoRA-adapted variants were trained: General-FT, on 91,143 parallel segments of contemporary religious discourse drawn from the General Conference talks and other publications of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, and Scriptural-FT, on 33,229 segments from the scriptural canon of The Church. The three models were evaluated using automated metrics (BLEU, chrF, COMET) covering both domain-matched and cross-domain conditions, and on a …
The Great Depression And Canada's Major Originalist Decade, Preston Jordan Lim
The Great Depression And Canada's Major Originalist Decade, Preston Jordan Lim
Faculty Publications
Few periods of Canadian history have been as momentous or terrible as the Great Depression. The Dominion and provincial governments’ inability to combat financial and environmental catastrophe led many Canadians to openly question the appropriateness of their constitutional framework. As legal historians have since documented, many leading jurists of the time believed that a strong central government could, through the institution of national programs, contain the Great Depression; in the eyes of these 1930s jurists, the Judicial Committee of the Privy Council—then Canada’s apex court—had sapped the federal government of its powers by misinterpreting the British North America Act, 1867 …
