Implementation Of A Frequency-Agile, High Power Backward Wave Oscillator, Chaouki T. Abdallah, E. Schamiloglu, G.T. Park, V.S. Souvalian Jan 1997

Implementation Of A Frequency-Agile, High Power Backward Wave Oscillator, Chaouki T. Abdallah, E. Schamiloglu, G.T. Park, V.S. Souvalian

Electrical & Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

Work at the University of New Mexico (UNM) has demonstrated how finite length effects in a high power vacuum backward wave oscillator (BWO) can be exploited to achieve frequency agility for constant beam and magnetic field parameters. This enhanced bandwidth is obtained through the axial displacement of the slow wave structure with respect to the cutoff neck "inlet" to the electrodynamic system. This paper describes progress on the implementation of this automatic displacement to facilitate the incorporation of a robust controller, as proposed by Abdallah, et al. (1996). The purpose of this controller is to demonstrate a "smart tube" where …

Influence Of Culture On Intergenerational Conflict : A Comparative Study Of Burmese Adolescents, Immigrant Burmese Adolescents, And Anglo-Australian Adolescents, Romana Lee

Theses : Honours

Is there a difference, in the level of conflict with parents, that migrant adolescents experience in comparison to that of non-migrant adolescents? According to the literature, adolescents and their parents in the minority cultural groups are likely to experience high levels of conflict which may result from conflicting cultural norms (Rosenthal, 1984; Ghuman, 1975, Di J\.1arco, 1974, and Phinney, I 996). The present study was conducted with a sample of Burmese adolescents from Rangoon (Myamar), a sample of migrant Burmese adolescents from Perth (Western Australia), and a sample of Anglo-Australian adolescents also from Perth, to investigate age, gender and cultural …

Property And The First Amendment, Mark Cordes Jan 1997

Property And The First Amendment, Mark Cordes

University of Richmond Law Review

The last decade has seen an increased recognition of property rights in Supreme Court analysis. This is most evident in the area of takings law, where the Court has on at least four occasions expanded property rights relative to government regulation. Perhaps even more significant than the results themselves has been the Court's tone in these decisions, where it has emphasized that property rights are to be taken seriously and are not a "poor relation" to other constitutional safeguards. This has led some commentators to suggest that recognition of property rights is becoming a primary agenda item of the Court.

Reluctant Charity: Poor Laws In The Original Thirteen States, William P. Quigley Jan 1997

Reluctant Charity: Poor Laws In The Original Thirteen States, William P. Quigley

University of Richmond Law Review

The poor laws of the original thirteen states can best be described as reluctant public charity. Assistance was provided to some of the poor but, when provided, was strictly rationed to those local residents considered worthy of help. Visitors, strangers and nonresident poor people were not helped and were legally run out of town. Poor relief for the locals was frequently given in ways that were demeaning and destructive to families. Poor people were always expected to work, and even poor children were taken from their families by the authorities and apprenticed to others. Poor adults that could work were …

The Property Concept Of Trade Secrets In Anglo-American Law: An Ongoing Debate, Miguel Deutch Jan 1997

The Property Concept Of Trade Secrets In Anglo-American Law: An Ongoing Debate, Miguel Deutch

University of Richmond Law Review

The law of trade secrets is central to the protection of commercial interests in information. The protection of information by way of this law has certain advantages not provided by the more "traditional" laws regulating intellectual property, advantages which amplify the growing interest of modern jurisprudence in trade secrets law.1 As has been correctly pointed out, the "traditional" rules governing intellectual property are ill suited to the demands of new technological developments.2 This reality has increased the importance of the law of trade secrets, in as much as it is both more flexible and general, and thus, more easily applied …

Defying The Odds: The Christian Coalition In The Life Cycle Of The Religious Right, Kathleen S Espin Jan 1997

Defying The Odds: The Christian Coalition In The Life Cycle Of The Religious Right, Kathleen S Espin

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

According to the established theories on the life cycle of social movements, the Maintenance Stage of a movement is a critical time that marks a crossroads. One path leads to victory and the other to oblivion. The odds are strongly against victory for any social movement because the bureaucratic necessities for long-term maintenance of a movement siphon off spontaneity, excitement, and "esprit de corps." Few social movements are totally successful and many are absorbed or cooped by established institutions. This study examines how the Religious Right, under the leadership of the Christian Coalition, has defied the odds and has become …

Techniques For Lossless Image Compression, Daniel R Jenkins Jan 1997

Techniques For Lossless Image Compression, Daniel R Jenkins

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Popular lossless image compression techniques used today belong to the Lempel-Ziv family of encoders. These techniques are generic in nature and do not take full advantage of the two-dimensional correlation of digital image data. They process a one-dimensional stream of data replacing repetitions with smaller codes. Techniques for Lossless Image Compression introduces a new model for lossless image compression that consists of two stages: transformation and encoDing Transformation takes advantage of the correlative properties of the data, modifying it in order to maximize the use of encoding techniques. Encoding can be described as replacing data symbols that occur frequently or …

Walter Macken: Life In Literature, Megan Lyn Denio Jan 1997

Walter Macken: Life In Literature, Megan Lyn Denio

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Walter Macken: Life in Literature introduces Walter Macken, a Galwegian novelist, playwright, short-story writer, and children's novelist, to an American audience in order to make his works better known. The themes in Macken's novels show common elements among Irish authors. The use of the common man and the use of Ireland's history are most prevalent in Irish literature. However, Macken's use of autobiographical elements in the midst of his presentation of life in the West of Ireland, in many ways, sets him apart from the other Irish authors. Few have chronicled the lives of the farmers and the fishermen in …

Volcanology And Geochemistry Of Pliocene And Quaternary Basalts On Citadel Mountain, Lunar Crater Volcanic Field, Pancake Range, Nevada, Loretta Darlene Dickson Jan 1997

Volcanology And Geochemistry Of Pliocene And Quaternary Basalts On Citadel Mountain, Lunar Crater Volcanic Field, Pancake Range, Nevada, Loretta Darlene Dickson

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Alkali basalts on Citadel Mountain form the southern margin of the Lunar Crater Volcanic Field (LCVF) in the central Great Basin, Nevada. Citadel Mountain, comprised of a faulted, north tilted section of Tertiary andesite and ash-flow tuff, is capped by Pliocene and Quaternary alkali basalt flows that erupted from six major cinder cones. The basalt flows on Citadel Mountain can be divided into two groups (older and younger) based on age and isotopic signatures. The older basalt group is characterized by high {dollar}\sp{87}{dollar}Sr/{dollar}\sp{86}{dollar}Sr and low {dollar}\rm\epsilon\sb{Nd},{dollar} and the younger group has low {dollar}\sp{87}{dollar}Sr/{dollar}\sp{86}{dollar}Sr and high {dollar}\rm\epsilon\sb{Nd}.{dollar} Geochemical evidence suggests that …

Two Optimization Techniques For Designing Multiplierless Fir Filters, Torrance Matthew Lawton

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

This thesis introduces two optimal design techniques for discrete time finite impulse response (FIR) multiplierless filters with constant group delay. The first technique minimizes a weighted least squared optimality criteria. The second technique minimizes a weighted least squared optimality criteria subject to user specified frequency constraints. Examples are included of transport processor applications and finite wordlength coefficient applications.

A Family Portrait: Domestic Dynamics In The Fiction Of Mary Lavin, Lisa Lorraine Montagne Jan 1997

A Family Portrait: Domestic Dynamics In The Fiction Of Mary Lavin, Lisa Lorraine Montagne

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Mary Lavin (1912-1996) was fairly well-known in Ireland during her lifetime; however, there has been relatively little critical attention paid to her, especially in America, throughout her fifty-year career. This study focuses on the domestic dynamics of the family in Lavin's fiction, whose world is influenced by the more harsh realities of early twentieth-century Irish society: the Victorian expectations of traditional gender roles, a rigid social caste system, and, at times, misguided religion. It is the purpose of this study to explore whether Lavin's characters can find happiness and fulfillment by acting according to personal conscience within this closely-prescribed social …

A History Of The Las Vegas School Desegregation Case: Kelly Et Al V The Clark County School District, Ronan Matthew

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Kelly et al. v. Clark County School District (1972) is the title of a case initiated in 1968. The lawsuit alleged that de facto segregation existed in six elementary schools in Westside Las Vegas, 14 years following Brown v. Board of Education (1954) which called for the desegregation of American public schools. The case ended in 1972 with a victory for the plaintiffs, with the ordering of desegregation of the elementary schools in question. The purpose of this study was to examine the history of Kelly et al. v. Clark County School District (1972). Included in the study were a …

Educational Reform Through The Implementation Of National Standards: A Response, Richard J. Reynolds Jan 1997

Educational Reform Through The Implementation Of National Standards: A Response, Richard J. Reynolds

Mid-Western Educational Researcher

At this writing, federal initiatives for education reform seem to be taking their last gasps. There is a question as to whether Goals 2000 will make it to the year 2000. The development of voluntary, national standards has generated considerable debate both as to the desirability of such standards and the enlarged federal role in education. What is killing these initiatives and are they worth saving?
