A Strategy To Reach The English-Speaking People Of The Bay Islands Of Honduras, Stavely P. Elwin
A Strategy To Reach The English-Speaking People Of The Bay Islands Of Honduras, Stavely P. Elwin
Doctor of Ministry Projects
Problem
The English-speaking Seventh-day Adventist church in the Bay Islands has experienced slow growth over the last ten years. An evaluation reveals that some of the problems include poor evangelistic methods, few well trained pastors and workers, the churches' lack of support from the local mission and pastors, and no material provisions for the departments of the church. In addition, programs are lacking to help members come in contact with secular-minded people, and the methods used to improve the retention rate of newly- baptized members indicate there is a tremendous need for change in the style of evangelism in the …

Development Of A Program For Intentional Growth In The Antioch Seventh-Day Adventist Congregation, Long Island, New York, Trevor Saint Aubyn Forbes
Doctor of Ministry Projects
Problem
The Antioch Seventh-day Adventist congregation was started in 1988 and grew steadily; however, for the last four years membership growth has plateaued. This lack of church growth has caused much concern among the church’s administration. The original hope and intention that the congregation would establish a growing church was founded on the premise that in order for the congregation to grow, it must implement intentional church growth programs.
Method
In order to learn how churches grow, I surveyed literature on church growth. I also interviewed six pastors of growing churches — three who are Seventh-day Adventists and three who …

Speeding, Spending, And Sponsors: Tourism And The Nascar Winston Cup Experience, Mark D. Howell
Visions in Leisure and Business
This article provides an overview of the NASCAR Winston Cup Series and an analysis of how stock car racing has become a focal point for tourism in the region around Charlotte, North Carolina. The article examines how businesses have capitalized on the loyalty and financial strength of Winston Cup race fans by making themselves spin-off attractions connected loosely to the sport of stock car racing.
Evidence to support claims made in this article comes from the author's fieldwork within the Charlotte-based Winston Cup community. This includes observations made by the author during the summer of 1997 while in North Carolina …

Familiar Stories: Plain-Spoken Poetry From A Missouri Woman, W. Carolyn Smith
Familiar Stories: Plain-Spoken Poetry From A Missouri Woman, W. Carolyn Smith
Theses
This project started as an exercise in a creative writing cluster class. Then I paid a visit to my mother and heard a couple of stories about two nephews that were poignant, yet amusing. I wrote them as I heard them, in conversational style, and the format of my story-poems was born.
The first three chapters cover my background, my training, the influences on my writing, and specifically, examples of three authors whose writing encouraged me to write. The training emphasized factual writing in business communications and journalism. Because of this training, most of the facts in the poems are …

Task 1c3 Humanitarian Demining Requirement Analysis Final Report, Cisr
Global CWD Repository
The Humanitarian Demining Information Center (HDIC) at James Madison University is developing a plan for identifying, analyzing, enhancing, and disseminating electronic and hard copy information relating to humanitarian demining. The first step toward realizing this objective was identifying the information needs, information availability and optimal methods for organizing and delivering information to the humanitarian demining community.
Broadly conceived, the humanitarian demining community consists of ten components.
- • U.S. government agencies that have as part of their mission the development of programs for humanitarian demining in selected countries • volunteer organizations that are directly involved in the task of humanitarian demining …

Faculty Bibliography 1990s
Polarized fluorescence spectra produced by site-selective excitation, and conventional polarized absorption spectra were obtained for Tm3+ and Er3+ ions individually incorporated into single crystals of strontium fluorapatite, Sr-5(PO4)(3)F, also known as SFAP. Substitution of the trivalent rare earth ion for divalent strontium was achieved by passive charge compensation during Czochralski growth of the fluorapatite crystals. Spectra were obtained between 1780 and 345 nm at temperatures from 4 K to room temperature on crystals having the hexagonal structure [P6(3)/m(C-6h(2))]. The polarized fluorescence spectra due to transitions from multiplet manifolds of Tm3+(4f(12)), including D-1(2), (1)G(4), and H-3(4) to manifolds H-3(6) (the ground-state …

Dynamic Band Unblocking And Leakage Two-Photon Absorption In Insb, M. P. Hasselbeck, E. W. Stryland, M. Sheik-Bahae
Faculty Bibliography 1990s
An experimental demonstration of a dynamic decrease of the optical band gap of bulk n-InSb induced by picosecond, midinfrared laser pulses is reported. This occurs as a result of laser heating of the quiescent electron distribution by free-carrier absorption. The hot electrons vacate low-energy states near the conduction;band minimum, unblocking terminal states for two-photon absorption across the band gap. This ''leakage'' two-photon absorption is detected as a consequence of changes to the refractive index and absorption coefficient of the semiconductor caused by photocarriers. The onset of dynamic band unblocking agrees with a calculation of laser-induced electron heating.

Influence (Or The Lack Of It) In The Economics Profession: The Case Of Lucien Albert Hahn, Robert Leeson
Influence (Or The Lack Of It) In The Economics Profession: The Case Of Lucien Albert Hahn, Robert Leeson
Business Papers and Journal Articles
This article provides information on economist Lucien Albert Hahn's influence on economics, and highlights similarity between Hahn and A.W. Phillips. Hahn's work was, in some important circles, fairly central to what Gottfried Haberler called the last great debate on inflation in the 1950s. The great debate in the 1970s was over the Phillips curve trade-off; in the 1950s, economist Sumner H. Slichter advocated the proposition that creeping inflation could be permanently tolerated. The context was the Delphic Oracular quality of the 1946 U.S. Employment Act, and the apparent incompatibility of the pursuit of full employment with price stability. Hahn was …

48 Postcards : A Road Trip Memoir, Stephanie J. Chiariello
USF St. Petersburg campus Honors Program Theses (Undergraduate)
To fulfill the University Honors Program's thesis requirement, I have written a narrative account of the three week/forty-eight state road trip I took with my sister and a friend in the summer of 1995. This odyssey across the United States proved to be one of the most profound growing experiences of my life and I wanted to examine some of the issues involved in this brand of travel, especially those of self examination and self-discovery. When I decided to take this trip, I was at the lowest point I'd ever been in a life littered with low points. As a …

Of Politics, Morality, And Tobacco Regulation, Karen Mae Dimon
USF St. Petersburg campus Honors Program Theses (Undergraduate)
The production, consumption, and regulation of tobacco is presently the subject of much discussion and debate. While the issues surrounding tobacco have been debated for decades, much of the current attention on tobacco is due to the many proposals to regulate tobacco, the state and class action lawsuits pending against the tobacco industry, and the damaging tobacco company documents that have recently been made public. Most tobacco control proposals are intent on expanding the presence of government in the tobacco industry through increased regulation and taxation. A majority of the controversy over tobacco regulation focuses on the role of government …
