Attorney Advertising: The Effect On Juror Perceptions And Verdicts, Stephanie Moore Myers Jan 1997

Attorney Advertising: The Effect On Juror Perceptions And Verdicts, Stephanie Moore Myers

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

This study examined the effect of attorney television advertising on jurors. Southern Nevada jurors who had served on personal injury and malpractice trials were sent survey questionnaires designed to elicit juror attitudes about attorneys and attorney advertising. The response rate was 53.3%; The major finding was that although respondents generally do not like lawyer television advertising, it does not affect their trial verdicts unless jurors are actually confronted with a plaintiff's lawyer who advertises on television; then, jurors tend to vote for the defense. There is strong sentiment that the law should be changed to limit jury awards. Advertising lawyers …

Factors That Contribute To The Progress Of High School Students In A College Distance Education Course, Joni M. Flowers

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

This dissertation examined the factors that contributed to the high school students' progress in a college-level, distance education course. Four high school students, two seniors and two juniors, were selected to participate in the study. They were simultaneously enrolled in high school and the college distance education course. The researcher in the study was also the instructor. Her lectures were presented to the students via prerecorded videotapes. The college course involved the use of three distance education technologies: video-based instruction, email, and the World Wide Web; A qualitative methodology using a multiple case study design was used in this study. …

Provenance And Tectonic Significance Of The Lower Paleozoic Douglas Conglomerate, Northern Churchill Mountains, Antarctica, Susan Kay Panttaja Jan 1997

Provenance And Tectonic Significance Of The Lower Paleozoic Douglas Conglomerate, Northern Churchill Mountains, Antarctica, Susan Kay Panttaja

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

The Douglas Conglomerate in the Churchill Mountains of Antarctica is a polymictic, unconformity-bounded unit whose age is poorly constrained between Late Cambrian and Devonian. Its source areas were local, including outcrops of Cambrian Shackleton Limestone, the craton of Greater Antarctica, and perhaps, terranes that lay outboard of the craton but subsequently were dispersed along transform faults; Petrographic analyses suggest a recycled orogen provenance for the Douglas Its depositional basin may have developed within a fold-and-thrust belt or along an active transform fault. Subsequent tectonism dismembered the formation, but its composition suggests the basin had fault-controlled margins walled within Shackleton Limestone …

Stratigraphy And Depositional Environments Of Lower And Middle Cambrian Strata In The Lake Mead Region, Southern Nevada And Northwestern Arizona, Joseph Kirk Hardy Jan 1997

Stratigraphy And Depositional Environments Of Lower And Middle Cambrian Strata In The Lake Mead Region, Southern Nevada And Northwestern Arizona, Joseph Kirk Hardy

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

The stratigraphy and depositional systems revealed within the Lower to Middle Cambrian Tapeats Sandstone-Pioche Shale-Lyndon Limestone-Chisholm Shale succession were studied between the easternmost limit of Cretaceous overthrusting in southern Nevada and the western edge of the Colorado Plateau in northwestern Arizona. Nine intergradational lithofacies were distinguished based on a rich suite of sedimentary structures, including lenticular-, wavy-, and flaser-bedding, wrinkle marks, herringbone cross-stratification, convolute bedding, primary current lineations, interference ripple marks, bird's eye structures, thrombolites, intraformational conglomerates, oncoids, cryptalgal laminites, and Arenicoloides, Corophioides, and Skolithos ichnofossils. The collective presence of these structures indicates that Lower and Middle Cambrian rocks in …

The Effect Of Wetsuit Leg Coverage On Swimming Speed And Selected Physiological Measures, Peggy-Lynn Dursthoff Jan 1997

The Effect Of Wetsuit Leg Coverage On Swimming Speed And Selected Physiological Measures, Peggy-Lynn Dursthoff

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

The effect of wetsuit leg coverage on swimming speed and body temperatures was investigated by having 10 triathletes swim 1500 meters 4 times in two different water temperatures in short sleeved wetsuits. Subjects swam twice in a full wetsuit which covered the leg to the ankle and twice in a wetsuit which ended at mid-thigh. Four skin temperatures, esophageal temperature and swimming speed were measured during each swim. A 2 x 2 analysis of variance was performed on each dependant variable. In addition a 2 x 2 Manova was done to test for differences in the means of all skin …

Rhetorical Byron: An Interpretation Of His Historical Tragedies, Vicki Maxine Bertolino Jan 1997

Rhetorical Byron: An Interpretation Of His Historical Tragedies, Vicki Maxine Bertolino

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

This thesis shows that Lord Byron's history plays in particular may be works of fiction, but they may also be viewed as rhetorical discourses because they can be seen as direct responses to the complex social and political issues emerging from both the Industrial and French Revolutions. This claim was demonstrated by using a contemporary concept of rhetoric, Lloyd Bitzer's "The Rhetorical Situation." The major findings of this study were that Lord Byron was a rhetorician because his plays reflected a specific rhetorical situation, yet he also failed as a rhetorician because of his selection of an abstract, idealized audience …

College Students' Image Of Nursing As A Career Choice, Diana Teresa Mendez Jan 1997

College Students' Image Of Nursing As A Career Choice, Diana Teresa Mendez

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

This thesis is a study of the image of nursing among college students. It has been inferred that the poor image of nursing negatively impacts on recruitment into the profession. A convenience survey of two groups of college students was instituted to determine the image of nursing in relation to an ideal career, and to discover if there are factors which make the choice of nursing as a career more likely. The responses of a group of 163 nonnursing students were compared to the responses of a group of 93 nursing students; This survey indicated that the image of nursing …

Nurse And Patient Perception Of Stressors Associated With Coronary Artery Bypass Surgery, Rosemary Puetz Jan 1997

Nurse And Patient Perception Of Stressors Associated With Coronary Artery Bypass Surgery, Rosemary Puetz

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

This study investigated the relationships between the nurses' and patients' perception of stressors associated with coronary artery bypass surgery. The population of the study consisted of two groups: (1) patients recovering from coronary artery bypass surgery, and (2) registered nurses providing the care for the coronary artery bypass patient. The instrument utilized was the Cardiac Surgery Stressor Scale. The research data was analyzed by the following statistical techniques: (1) descriptive methods, (2) Pearson Product Moment Correlation Coefficient, and (3) Student t-test. Nurses consistently rated the stressors higher than the patients. The results suggest that nurses need to develop a method …

Mexican Identity In Clark County, Nevada: A Visual Ethnohistory, 1829-1960, Corinne Escobar Jan 1997

Mexican Identity In Clark County, Nevada: A Visual Ethnohistory, 1829-1960, Corinne Escobar

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Mexicans were present in southern Nevada since 1829 but their history is not well documented. Often their cultural identity was misrepresented in several Nevada histories. This thesis establishes a written and photographic documentation of the Mexican identity population in southern Nevada between 1829 and 1960; A four-fold typology that expands the definition of ethnicity to include the nature of interethnic relations between two or more ethnic groups is applied to identify the relationships experienced between those of Mexican identity and Euro-Americans. This model, known as the four types of ethnicity, describes interactive behavior as being complementary, competitive, confrontational, or colonial …

Effects Of Duct Source And Termination Impedance On The Acoustic Response Characteristics Of Duct Elements, Prabhanjan Mysore Jan 1997

Effects Of Duct Source And Termination Impedance On The Acoustic Response Characteristics Of Duct Elements, Prabhanjan Mysore

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

The objective of the thesis is to study the effects of termination of an air duct on the acoustic response characteristics of the elements in the duct system. The end reflections due to the mis-match of the acoustic impedance at the termination affect the acoustic characteristics of the duct elements; The ducts of the duct system, terminating into atmosphere abruptly, like the HVAC ducts with diffusers, provide reflective termination. With this type of termination much of the sound energy in lower frequencies is reflected. This sets up standing sound waves inside the duct. The analytical methods to calculate the insertion-loss, …

Pro-Work Policy Proposals For Older Americans In The 21st Century, Richard V. Burkhauser, Joseph F. Quinn Jan 1997

Pro-Work Policy Proposals For Older Americans In The 21st Century, Richard V. Burkhauser, Joseph F. Quinn

Center for Policy Research

Reports that the Social Security Trust Fund will be exhausted sometime in the early part of the next century reinforce the need to make retirement policy in the United States more accommodating for those who want to work. While there is general agreement that disincentives to work at older ages in both Social Security and employer pension plans played an important role in the dramatic drop in retirement age from 1945 through 1985, skepticism exists over the ability of policy changes to both stop this trend and increase work at older ages. In this policy brief we summarize how government …

The Changing Economic Circumstances Of The Elderly: Income, Wealth, And Social Security, James P. Smith Jan 1997

The Changing Economic Circumstances Of The Elderly: Income, Wealth, And Social Security, James P. Smith

Center for Policy Research

How is the economic status of the elderly changing and what are their prospects for the future? My portrait tells us how well off they are on average, but also about the vast disparities that exist among them. This description includes an often neglected measure of their economic well-being--the amount of wealth they control. Amazingly little is known about how much personal wealth older people have and how and what determines its distribution. But the conventional definition of household wealth ignores two critical components of wealth: the expected income flows from pensions and Social Security. For some elderly households, Social …

Characterization Of Thin-Bedded Turbidites From The Permian Tanqua Karoo Submarine Fan Deposits, South Africa., Debnath Basu Jan 1997

Characterization Of Thin-Bedded Turbidites From The Permian Tanqua Karoo Submarine Fan Deposits, South Africa., Debnath Basu

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Thin-bedded turbidites (TBTs, 5-60 cm) constitute a common facies in fine-grained deep-water clastic environments. Proper characterization of these deposits are lacking due to the scarcity of well preserved outcrops exposing TBTs and the difficulty in resolving them by conventional subsurface logging methods. The objective of this study is to characterize TBTs developed in a variety of laterally contiguous depositional environments in a submarine fan. These deposits are well exposed in the Permian Tanqua Karoo subbasin, South Africa. The subenvironments studied include upper mid-fan channel levee-overbank, mid-fan passive channel fill, lower mid-fan channel-sheet transition, and lower-fan distal sheet deposits. Field and …

Sugar Cane Fiber Geotextiles., Julia L. Thames Jan 1997

Sugar Cane Fiber Geotextiles., Julia L. Thames

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The study of sugar cane fiber geotextiles represents a holistic approach to interdisciplinary research that includes product development, product testing, industry and target market identification, and strategic and financial planning for manufacturing and distribution. Based upon satisfactory results of prior research, a field test of soil erosion control in a natural environment was designed to determine performance of the sugar cane product and commercially available natural fiber geotextiles of wood, straw, and coconut fiber. Field test results indicated that the sugar cane mats allowed grass from planted seed to germinate and the mats maintained integrity during heavy rains. Due to …

Acute Effects Of Passive Muscle Stretching On The Stretch-Shortening Phenomenon., Andrew Cornwell Jan 1997

Acute Effects Of Passive Muscle Stretching On The Stretch-Shortening Phenomenon., Andrew Cornwell

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Two experiments examined the acute effects of passive muscle stretching on the performance of a skill (vertical jump) which takes advantage of the stretch-shortening phenomenon. Because recent work suggests that passive stretching might impede the mechanisms (elastic and myoelectrical potentiation) thought to be responsible for this phenomenon, it was hypothesized that stretching would decrease the jump height of jumps executed with a preparatory countermovement (CMJ), but not the jump height of those initiated from a static, squatting position (SJ). In the first experiment, subjects performed CMJ and SJ jumps under two different conditions: after passively stretching the knee and hip …

Christian Heroism And Holy War In Anglo-Saxon England., Kent Gregory Hare Jan 1997

Christian Heroism And Holy War In Anglo-Saxon England., Kent Gregory Hare

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

This dissertation examines the character and development of a Christian heroic ideal in Anglo-Saxon England between the seventh and eleventh centuries and its manifestation through notions of holy war. It provides a valuable case study of the ongoing synthesis which occurred when the Germanic peoples converted to Christianity. The mutual transformation wrought in the traditional Germanic warrior ethos and Christian faith and values permeates the literary sources for Anglo-Saxon history, from the early hagiographies and Bede's Ecclesiastical History, through later histories and chronicles, to the unique corpus of Old English poetry. As early as the first generation of Anglo-Saxon Christianization, …

Synthesis Of Monodisperse Poly(Gamma-Benzyl-Alpha,L-Glutamate) Oligomers And Their Star-Shaped Derivatives., Xiaolan Wang Jan 1997

Synthesis Of Monodisperse Poly(Gamma-Benzyl-Alpha,L-Glutamate) Oligomers And Their Star-Shaped Derivatives., Xiaolan Wang

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Poly($\gamma$-benzyl-$\alpha$,L-glutamate), PBLG, is a widely studied example of polypeptides. The preparation of monodisperse samples of PBLG and PBLG oligomer is difficult to achieve. In this work we probe the possibility of preparation of PBLG oligomers by polymerization of L-glutamic acid N-carboxyanhydride (NCA) with different initiators such as primary amine, sterically hindered secondary amine, tertiary amine, and strong base. Information regarding molecular weight distribution of these oligomers was obtained by applying MALDI-TOF mass spectrometry and reversed phase HPLC. While some researchers reported that application of primary amine initiators or polar solvents such as DMF could improve the molecular weight distributions of …

Caprine Sperm Cells As Vectors For Gene Transfer., Yongxin Sun Jan 1997

Caprine Sperm Cells As Vectors For Gene Transfer., Yongxin Sun

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Goat sperm cells were used as a model to evaluate sperm-mediated gene transfer. Fresh and frozen-thawed goat sperm cells were co-incubated with radio-labelled foreign DNA. After 10 extensive washings, the compacted sperm retained foreign DNA. Confocal microscopy confirmed that the position on the sperm cell responsible for binding of foreign DNA was located in both the anterior and the posterior heads of caprine sperm cells. Furthermore, confocal longitudinal sections of the sperm cells showed that foreign DNA had penetrated into goat sperm nuclei. In this study, 37% of the fresh goat sperm and 33% of the frozen-thawed goat sperm cells …

Acid Solubilization Of Fish Protein For Production Of Protein Hydrolysate., Ercument Ozer Jan 1997

Acid Solubilization Of Fish Protein For Production Of Protein Hydrolysate., Ercument Ozer

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The mechanism of fish protein solubilization by acid hydrolysis at elevated temperatures was investigated. Rate expressions for the solubilization were determined using pilot scale data with two different rate determination methods. A postulated mechanism was verified and estimated rates were evaluated on five independent verification experiments. A functional relationship between nonprotein byproduct concentration and whiteness of fish protein hydrolysate (FPH) was developed. Initial and set-point operating variables were calculated to produce FPH with acceptable color characteristics for food use. A batch reactor was used for duplicate hydrolysis trials conducted at three acid and three temperature levels for four hours. Samples …

Late Quaternary Foraminifera From Lower Bathyal And Abyssal Sediments, Gulf Of Mexico: A Record Of Paleoceanographic Change., Megan H. Jones Jan 1997

Late Quaternary Foraminifera From Lower Bathyal And Abyssal Sediments, Gulf Of Mexico: A Record Of Paleoceanographic Change., Megan H. Jones

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Striking late Quaternary surface- and deep-water oceanographic changes and a link to North Atlantic thermohaline circulation are identified by analyses of high-resolution, benthic and planktic foraminiferal census data from the lower bathyal and abyssal Gulf of Mexico (GOM). The recognized environmental, watermass, preservation, and productivity signals reveal a detailed paleoenvironmental and paleoceanographic history. A paleoceanographic model developed for surface and deep waters of the abyssal Gulf describes a four-stage sequence of oceanographic changes from the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM) to the present. Compared to present-day surface waters, those of LGM were nutrient-enriched and had reduced productivity. The influx of glacial …

Stochastic Techniques For The Solution Of Electrostatic Problems With Applications To Electron Optics., Elias Kougianos Jan 1997

Stochastic Techniques For The Solution Of Electrostatic Problems With Applications To Electron Optics., Elias Kougianos

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

We apply stochastic techniques towards the solution of the two-dimensional Laplace's equation in boundary value problems encountered in the calculation of electrostatic potentials in electron lenses and deflectors. The justification of these techniques arises from an astonishingly simple but far-reaching principle, which has been known for a long time but has been rarely used: the potential at any point in the interior of a charge-free region can be calculated by performing random walks starting at this point and terminating at the boundary of the region--the potential is then the average of the potential boundary values (assumed known) over the random …

Teacher Conceptions And The Curriculum: A Longitudinal, Multicase Study Of College Chemistry Teaching., Charles J. Killebrew Jan 1997

Teacher Conceptions And The Curriculum: A Longitudinal, Multicase Study Of College Chemistry Teaching., Charles J. Killebrew

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Strategic innovations and interventions to reform college science teaching will be required to promote the retention and achievement of those students who might otherwise elect to defect at the entry-level courses. The extent to which this can be achieved will depend upon educational research into ways that the science curriculum can be restructured to accomplish the dual function of enhancing science literacy while promoting recruitment to scientific careers. To explore these issues, four introductory college chemistry classes were observed over a period of two years. The classes were designated either as traditional or conceptual. Selection into these categories was based …

Educational Plans Of Community College Students: An Expansion Of Two College Choice Models., Lisa M. Smith-Vosper Jan 1997

Educational Plans Of Community College Students: An Expansion Of Two College Choice Models., Lisa M. Smith-Vosper

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The purpose of this study was to determine if the factors posited by previous researchers to affect predisposition to attend college in high school students also affect the predisposition to transfer in the two-year college student population, and to investigate whether or not an expansion of the Hossler and Gallagher (1987) three-phase model of college choice and the Hossler and Stage (1992) Model of High School Students' Predisposition to College would yield great benefits. This analogy uses variables that have been advanced as effectual in the predisposition stage of the college choice process on the selected student population. The problem …

Characterization Of Monomer-Containing Monolayer Films On Au Surfaces., Robert J. Willicut Jan 1997

Characterization Of Monomer-Containing Monolayer Films On Au Surfaces., Robert J. Willicut

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Exploration into the nature of ultrathin, surface-confined films capable of electronic conduction has been the primary purpose of this dissertation. Specifically, the confinement of pyrrole monomer to Au surfaces through organosulfur linkages has been investigated. The synthesis of these new $\omega$-(N-pyrrolyl)alkanethiols is described herein. Cyclic voltammetry was utilized in this work to polymerize the monolayers and characterize the resulting films. Voltammetric analysis yielded currents in the correct potential region for poly(N-alkylpyrrole) charging/discharging. Other electrochemical studies revealed the ability of strong nucleophiles and electroinactive diluents to quench surface-confined polymer formation though they did not affect oxidation of the monomer. Exchange experiments …
