Evaluating The Impact Of A Meaningful Recognition Bundle On The Health Of The Emergency Department Work Environment And Emergency Nurse Burnout, Sean Truesdell

Doctoral Projects

Background: The health of the work environment significantly influences emergency nurse practice. The Emergency Nurses Association and the American Association of Critical-Care Nurses have called for the establishment of a healthy work environment (HWE) to improve outcomes, reduce burnout and turnover, and increase job satisfaction. Meaningful recognition is consistently among the lowest-performing HWE standards. Purpose: To implement a bundle of meaningful recognition elements in the Emergency Department (ED) and evaluate the outcomes. Methods: A quality improvement project was conducted in the ED of a non-profit community health system in Northern California. The Healthy Work Environment Assessment Tool (HWEAT) and Oldenburg …

Redlining And Neighborhood Health, Mariam Adams

McNair Scholars Collection

This research paper explores the historical impact of redlining and its connection to respiratory illness within communities of color. It acknowledges the role of social determinants of health, environmental pollution, and mental health disorders through comprehensive literature reviews. The primary objective is to investigate whether redlining contributes to adverse respiratory health outcomes among people of color living in these designated areas. The study delves into the discriminatory practice of redlining that relegated specific neighborhoods, predominantly inhabited by people of color, to substandard living conditions, limited resources, and reduced access to quality healthcare. By drawing upon evidence from various academic sources, …

Discrepancies Between Policy And Lived Experience In Spain’S Immigration Framework, Celia How May 2026

Discrepancies Between Policy And Lived Experience In Spain’S Immigration Framework, Celia How

McNair Scholars Collection

Despite extensive academic research and media coverage on refugees and undocumented migrants in Spain, these narratives often remain disconnected. This gap raises concerns about whether research fully captures the lived realities of displaced individuals. This qualitative study examines whether existing literature aligns with the experiences of refugees in Alcálá de Henares, Spain. Structured interviews were conducted with a refugee center director, a volunteer Spanish teacher, a refugee, and an undocumented migrant. Findings indicate that while academic research generally reflects key aspects of the refugee experience, it often underrepresents a critical issue: the inability to access legal employment despite a strong …

Metabolic Dysfunction And Metabolic Management In Episodic Migraine, Delora E. Denney, Michael J. Marmura

Department of Jefferson Headache Center Papers and Presentations

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Evidence suggests a significant link between migraine and metabolic syndrome,, especially in those with chronic or refractory migraine. Weight loss and exercise may effectively prevent migraine. Here, we review the evidence behind exercise and weight loss as migraine treatments.

RECENT FINDINGS: While metabolic syndrome and pain have long had a known association, only recently have strong studies demonstrated a higher risk of developing metabolic syndrome in people with migraine. Additionally, other sequelae of metabolic syndrome, obesity, hypertension, hypercoagulability, and diabetes also interplay with migraine. New medications like GLP-1 agonists may be a potential treatment for migraine as …

Voices From The Noise: Experiments And Considerations On Radio As Musical Instrument, Justin Taveras May 2026

Voices From The Noise: Experiments And Considerations On Radio As Musical Instrument, Justin Taveras

Student Theses

One of my primary goals in entering the Sonic Arts program was to familiarize myself with the tools and processes necessary for creating electronic music. My initial expectation was to learn how to use synthesizers, microphones, and effects processors to expand the timbral palette of my compositional practice. Coming from a background in contemporary classical music, I independently practiced working within the DAW timeline, and I was attracted to the level of compositional detail and control that a studio environment could offer. While these tools proved universal enough to become essential components of my current work, I did not expect …

Losses And Labor: Experimental Insights Into Worker Effort Supply And Behavioral Biases, Maia Lemov May 2026

Losses And Labor: Experimental Insights Into Worker Effort Supply And Behavioral Biases, Maia Lemov

Economics Honors Projects

Worker effort supply is influenced not only by rational expectations but also biases such as framing and numerical presentation of incentives. Identifying these effects is essential for designing effective incentives. To study left-digit manipulation, loss aversion, and loss aversion prediction, I conducted an experiment in an online labor market. Participants completed a real-effort typing task, a willingness- to-pay (WTP) task, and a self-reported loss aversion survey. Loss framing and left-digit manipulation had no statistically significant effects on effort, with no interaction effect, suggesting their influence on effort-supply may be overstated or highly heterogeneous. Despite null treatment effects, behaviorally elicited loss …

Propasafe-Hybrid: A Text-Based Hybrid Propaganda Detection Tool (Ila 2026 Presentation), Thomas Kimmeth, Avijit Roy, Vivek Sharma May 2026

Propasafe-Hybrid: A Text-Based Hybrid Propaganda Detection Tool (Ila 2026 Presentation), Thomas Kimmeth, Avijit Roy, Vivek Sharma

Publications and Research

This presentation introduces Propasafe-Hybrid, a hybrid system for sentence-level propaganda detection that combines offline transformer-based classification with selective large language model (LLM) explainability. The system employs a two-stage pipeline in which a local BERT-based classifier evaluates all input text and filters non-propagandistic content, while only high-confidence candidates are forwarded to an LLM for rhetorical technique labeling and explanation. This design enables cost-aware, privacy-conscious, and scalable analysis by reducing unnecessary reliance on external models.

Propasafe-Hybrid identifies propagandistic techniques such as loaded language, obfuscation, and appeal to fear, and generates concise natural language rationales that make these techniques interpretable to users. By …

Personalized Treatment Of Chronic Tendinopathy Using Ultrasound And Neuroimmune Markers: A Narrative Review, Rohan Phadke, Samer Salman, Kirtan Patel, Jad Wardeh, Akhil Marupudi, Rahul Kumar, Arbaz A. Momin, Alireza Tavakkoli

Department of Neurosurgery Faculty Papers

Introduction: : Chronic tendinopathy affects approximately 30% of musculoskeletal consultations, yet treatment outcomes remain inconsistent despite numerous available interventions. This variability stems from the absence of validated frameworks to match individual patients to optimal treatments based on underlying pathophysiology. To synthesize current evidence on ultrasound imaging biomarkers, neuroimmune mechanisms, and interventional therapies in chronic tendinopathy, and propose a clinically applicable framework integrating ultrasound phenotyping with neuroimmune assessment to guide personalized treatment selection. Methods: A systematic literature search was conducted across PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science through December 2025. Studies examining ultrasound/elastography imaging, neuroimmune mechanisms, or treatment interventions in chronic …

Experiences Of Discrimination, Paternal Support, And Hypertensive Disorders Of Pregnancy (Hdp) In The Miehr Study, Houston, Texas, Tahereh Alinia, Elaine Symanski, Juan Manuel Alvarez, Kristina Walker Whitworth

Faculty, Staff and Students Publications

Background: Discrimination is a psychosocial stressor that, through activation of stress-response pathways, may influence risk of adverse perinatal health outcomes. However, few studies have evaluated the association between discrimination and hypertensive disorders of pregnancy (HDP), and none have explored effect modification by race or paternal support, which may buffer the adverse effects of discrimination.

Methods: We included 1,847 non-Hispanic Black and White participants from the Maternal and Infant Environmental Health Riskscape (MIEHR) study. Krieger's validated Experiences of Discrimination (EOD) scale was used to assess occurrence (yes/no) and frequency (once, 2-3, ≥ 4 times) of discrimination in nine situations. We created …

Tappan Square: A Ghost Story, Camille Thorp May 2026

Tappan Square: A Ghost Story, Camille Thorp

Research Symposium

The purpose of this research is twofold: producing a genre critique of paranormal investigation literature and critically engaging further with its rhetorical strategies through a case study of the ghosts of Tappan Square. The genre is established in a survey of texts from varying disciplines and degrees of veracity, ranging from literary journalism to American Gothic fiction to parapsychology. These disparate works are linked by their dual disenchantment and re-enchantment of reality in the act of both locating ghosts and working to understand them. From their spiritual language emerges an experiential grammar; the personal, obsessively dot-connecting narration of such ghost …

Investigating The Impact Of Individual Differences In Inattentiveness On Learning From Gesture, Alexander Hurka May 2026

Investigating The Impact Of Individual Differences In Inattentiveness On Learning From Gesture, Alexander Hurka

Undergraduate Research and Engagement Symposium

Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is associated with inattentiveness and lower working memory capacity, which can impair academic performance. Gestures, movements of the hands that express information alongside speech, help maintain attention and support learning. We investigated whether adults learn Japanese vocabulary more effectively through speech alone or speech+gesture instruction. Baseline and visual attentiveness were measured to explore interactions between attention and gesture-based learning. Spontaneous gesture rates were also measured to consider the implications of gesture production in learning. This study helps understand and develop gesture-related tools that can be particularly beneficial to students struggling with attention.

Power Of 10 Activities – Scale Of Space, Larry Browning, Kay Cutler

Astronomy Activities

Long Description (About):  Have you ever wondered about how to scale size in space? Or think about the distance between planets and how to explain that to learners? The distances are so immense, compared to our everyday experience, an easy way to express and discuss these large distances is needed. It is also helpful to compare distances to what is familiar, especially for emerging learners. A series of movies does do this, but the challenge is to appreciate, at some level, how the zooming out (or in) is happening. The Power of 10 concept can be helpful to understand and …
