The Anchor, Volume 111.04: September 17, 1997, Hope College

The Anchor: 1997

The Anchor began in 1887 and was first issued weekly in 1914. Covering national and campus news alike, Hope College’s student-run newspaper has grown over the years to encompass over two-dozen editors, reporters, and staff. For much of The Anchor's history, the latest issue was distributed across campus each Wednesday throughout the academic school year (with few exceptions). In recent years The Anchor moved to monthly print issues and a more frequently updated website. The Anchor is now published in print twice per academic semester. Occasionally, the volume and/or issue numbering is irregular.

Differential Display: Identifying Genes Involved In Cardiomyocyte Proliferation, Stephania Cormier-Regard, Daniel B. Egeland, Vivien J. Tannoch, William C. Claycomb

Division of Basic Science Faculty Publications

An estimated 15,000 different mRNA species are expressed in a typical mammalian cell. The differential expression of mRNAs in both a temporal and cell-specific manner determines the fate of the cell and creates the organism. Analysis of this differential gene expression has become a central aim of many laboratories attempting to understand the mechanisms underlying various biological processes. Currently, we are using a technique called differential display to analyze the differential expression of genes in cardiomyocytes. Differential display is a rapid and powerful technique that was introduced by Liang and Pardee in 1992. Since that time, it has been successfully …

Calibration And Evaluation Of Blackbeard Time Tagging Capability, David Smith, Dorothea Delapp, Daniel Holden, Gary Stelzer, Phillip Klingner Sep 1997

Calibration And Evaluation Of Blackbeard Time Tagging Capability, David Smith, Dorothea Delapp, Daniel Holden, Gary Stelzer, Phillip Klingner

Small Satellite Conference

The Blackbeard instrument is a broadband radio receiver on the ALEXIS (Array of Low Energy X-ray Imaging Sensors) satellite. It detects and records transient VHF radio signals. During November and December of 1996, the Los Alamos Portable Pulser (LAPP) facility was used to transmit 31 broadband pulses to Blackbeard to evaluate the instrument's time tagging accuracy. LAPP firing times were used in conjunction with propagation delays to compute estimated times of arrival (ETOAs) for pulses reaching Blackbeard. ETOAs were compared to Blackbeard reported times of arrival (RTOAs), which were computed using information returned by Blackbeard and an algorithm presented in …

Seastar™ (Orbview-2) Flight Operations And Data Delivery, Patricia Leygraaf Sep 1997

Seastar™ (Orbview-2) Flight Operations And Data Delivery, Patricia Leygraaf

Small Satellite Conference

SeaStar is the result of a ground-breaking arrangement between Orbital Sciences Corporation and NASA, in which the U.S. Government is procuring space-based environmental remote sensing data for research purposes from a commercial operator. The SeaStar system incorporates the Sea-viewing Wide Field-of-view Sensor (SeaWiFS), a visible to near-infrared, multi-spectral scanning radiometer developed by the Hughes Santa Barbara Research Center (SBRC). The ocean color data provided by this mission supports more efficient and profitable environmental monitoring and marine industries. The data purchase arrangement with NASA results in a unique mission operations scenario. Orbital is responsible for conducting full mission operations and maintaining …

Alexis, The Little Satellite That Could - 4 Years Later, Diane Roussel-Dupre, Jeff Bloch, Cindy Little, Robert Dingler, Bryan Dunne, Sandra Fletcher, Meg Kennison, Keri Ramsey, Rebecca King, James Theiler, John Sutton, James Wren

Small Satellite Conference

The 113-kg Array of Low Energy X-ray Imaging Sensors (ALEXIS) satellite was launched from the fourth flight of Pegasus on 25 April, 1993 into a 750 x 850 km, 70 degree inclination orbit. Due to damage sustained at the time of launch, ground controllers did not make contact with the satellite until late June of 1993. By late July, full satellite operations had been restored through the implementation of new procedures for attitude control. Science operations with the two onboard experiments began at that time. Now 4 years later ALEXIS is still collecting more than 100 MB of mission data …

Program Concept Of "Project Hyper-Sat", Tatsuhito Fujita, Takeshi Sasaki, Yusuke Matsumura, Yasuhiro Takami, Yasuhiro Kawada

Small Satellite Conference

Project Hyper-Sat is the development program of the advanced technology applied to new generation satellite, especially small and high performance satellite. This program goes ahead with the development of the advanced technology in the wide area from parts level to satellite system level, and aims at the realization of new missions which fit this hyper type of satellite early in the 21th century. We have surveyed the new technology which become the objects of Project Hyper-Sat, and extracted the technology which are essential for the achievement of assumed missions. This paper presents the result of the survey of new technology, …

Small Satellite Conference

Available ground optic and radar facilities are not capable to observe small sized fragments (less than 10 cm) of space debris, being a serious danger for manned flights safety and long-term automatic space vehicles. New generation of space electrooptic sensors, installed onboard small space vehicles may unable to successfully solve the problem. At present possibilities of electrooptic instruments and small space vehicles for space debris observation are under consideration in Russia. International co-operation program is proposed on creation of a space system for monitoring and warning of a danger of space debris fragments collision with some manned objects.

Spanish Minisat Program Detail Design, Manufacturing, Launching And Operational Phases, Miguel Garcia Primo Sep 1997

Spanish Minisat Program Detail Design, Manufacturing, Launching And Operational Phases, Miguel Garcia Primo

Small Satellite Conference

The Spanish MINISAT program has been structured in three main stages plus several associated developments, achieving a modular family of low cost platforms in the small satellite segment, designed to use mainly in low earth orbit (LEO) applications. The first stage of the MINISAT program conclude with the complete development and orbit qualification of the platform MINISAT 0 together with the operational experiences will be achieved to perform the scientific mission 01. This platform is already left commercially available to perform a lot of scientific missions. The second stage of the MINISAT program consist of the modular upgrading of the …
