Intelligent Systems Applied To The Aerospace Industry, Charisse Sary, Roger Werking Sep 1997

Intelligent Systems Applied To The Aerospace Industry, Charisse Sary, Roger Werking

Small Satellite Conference

For years, the aerospace industry has relied on people and their knowledge to make critical decisions. This method of decision-making has become very expensive and unreliable, particularly when used to monitor increasingly complex systems. Intelligent systems and tools are now available that can be used to reduce costs and improve operations. Much work has been done in the area of intelligent systems to support aerospace-related activities. Computer Sciences Corporation (CSC) has conducted studies and developed prototypes using three forms of intelligent systems: case-based reasoning, rule-based reasoning, and model-based reasoning. This paper will present an overview of these technologies and related …

Forte Hardware-In-Loop Simulation, Kimberly Ruud, Hugh Murray, Troy Moore Sep 1997

Forte Hardware-In-Loop Simulation, Kimberly Ruud, Hugh Murray, Troy Moore

Small Satellite Conference

Fast On-Orbit Recording of Transient Events (FORTE) is a small, low Earth orbit satellite scheduled for launch in August 1997. FORTE is a momentum-biased, gravity-gradient stabilized spacecraft. This paper describes the use of a hardware-in-Ioop simulator, developed by Ithaco Inc. and Los Alamos National Laboratory, in performing FORTE mission simulations. Scenarios studied include separation, acquisition on orbit, control system parameter sensitivity studies, sensor noise simulations, antenna deployment and momentum desaturation. Use of the simulator to refine control algorithms and sequences is also described.

A Highly Integrated S-Band Transceiver System With Two-Way Doppler Tracking Capability, Robert Bokulic, Christopher Deboy, Daniel Minarik, John Daniels, Sheng Cheng, Jeffrey Sinsky Sep 1997

A Highly Integrated S-Band Transceiver System With Two-Way Doppler Tracking Capability, Robert Bokulic, Christopher Deboy, Daniel Minarik, John Daniels, Sheng Cheng, Jeffrey Sinsky

Small Satellite Conference

The present-day emphasis on smaller, lower cost spacecraft missions has generated significant interest in higher levels of integration for spacecraft electronics. One of the more effective approaches is to integrate the core electronics, including the RF hardware, into a single card-based chassis commonly referred to as an Integrated Electronics Module (IEM). This approach has been adopted for the TIMED spacecraft, currently being built for NASA by the Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory. Breaking from traditional approaches, TIMED incorporates the S-band transmitter and receiver functions into the IEM along with the spacecraft digital electronics. These RF functions are integrated with …

An Alternative To Deployed Thermal Radiators: Deployed Equipment Modules With Individual Package Temperature Control, Nelson Hyman Sep 1997

An Alternative To Deployed Thermal Radiators: Deployed Equipment Modules With Individual Package Temperature Control, Nelson Hyman

Small Satellite Conference

As small satellites' power-to-external area ratios increase, so does the ordeal of securing the necessary thermal radiator area. To provide robust temperature control for any conceivable power density, two new concepts are proposed: a satellite architecture based on deployed equipment modules for increased radiator area, and thermal switches on each package mounted to module panels. A beneficial synergy comes from employing these independent concepts on small satellites whose exterior panels serve as both equipment mounting decks and thermal radiators. Hypothetical examples of multiple module deployments demonstrate the potential for dramatic increases in effective radiator area that allows a comfortably large …

Command And Data Handling In Your Palm, R.F. Conde, B.Q. Le, J.F. Bogdanski, A.L. Lew, J.A. Perschy, Ann Garrison Darrin

Small Satellite Conference

The shift in emphasis to smaller, better, and cheaper spacecraft, resulting from the NASA New Millennium Program (NMP) and similar initiatives in DoD-sponsored programs, demands highly innovative designs that standard electronic packaging cannot meet. Current technology primarily uses conventional packaging with surface mounted or through hole components. This approach increases the board size and the overall system weight owing to the larger sizes of the board and the components mounted on it. Chip-on-Board (COB) technology, where active dice are directly mounted onto a substrate without the need for an intermediate package, provides the basic vehicle to miniaturize electronic hardware. This …

Spacecraft Energy Storage Systems, Wilf Robinson, James Hanks, Len Spina, Doug Havenhill, Gary Gisler, Steve Ginter, Sharon Brault Sep 1997

Spacecraft Energy Storage Systems, Wilf Robinson, James Hanks, Len Spina, Doug Havenhill, Gary Gisler, Steve Ginter, Sharon Brault

Small Satellite Conference

Flywheel Energy Storage Systems represent an exciting alternative to traditional battery storage systems used to power satellites during periods of eclipse. The increasing demand for reliable communication and data access is driving explosive growth in the number of satellite systems being developed as well as their performance requirements. Power on orbit is the key to this performance, and batteries are becoming increasingly unattractive as an energy storage media. Flywheel systems offer very attractive characteristics for both energy storage in terms of energy density and the number of charge/discharge cycles, together with the important side benefit of spacecraft attitude control.

A Fault Tolerant Integrated Electronics Module For Small Satellites, M.E. Fraeman Sep 1997

A Fault Tolerant Integrated Electronics Module For Small Satellites, M.E. Fraeman

Small Satellite Conference

The Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory (JHU/APL) Space Department has developed the JHU/APL Integrated Electronics Module (APL IEM) architecture for future satellites to minimize development costs while maximizing mission flexibility. The architecture supports both low earth orbit and deep space missions. Redundant and single string configurations are possible. Core spacecraft functions including communications, guidance, navigation, attitude, power control, health and safety, command, and data handling are implemented in the APL IEM. Extensive use is made of industry standards. Adhering to these standards at subsystem boundaries allows us to incrementally improve these designs without impacting the remainder of the system. …

Vcu Voice (1997-09-15) Sep 1997

Vcu Voice (1997-09-15)

VCU Voice, 1988-1998

VCU Today, the University’s first official administrative organ, began as a somewhat irregular monthly publication but moved to a bi-weekly newspaper format in the 1980s. The newspaper changed its name to VCU Voice in 1988 and ten years later it appeared under the title UniverCity News. As it neared the end of its run as a physical newspaper, the publication became simply VCU News. These four publications were essentially the same periodical published under different titles by the Office of University Relations. VCU News appeared online for the first time in 2002.
