Portrayal Of Teacher Image: An Exploration Of Perceptions And Behaviors Of Healthcare Educators., Carole Shockey Thomassy

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The purpose of this study was to explore and describe the image healthcare educators believed they portrayed as a teacher and the behaviors they believed actualized the image. A pilot study was completed to evaluate the data collection techniques. A purposive sample of healthcare educators participated in one-to-one semi-standardized interviews and was observed in a teaching situation for demonstration of self-identified behaviors they believed actualized their image. Thematic analysis of the data resulted in five categories: coming to the role, perceptions held by subjects regarding image, people who may have influenced the image, behaviors that actualized the image and self-perceived …

Role Of Patient Empowerment In Enhancing Medical Care Outcomes: Development And Validation Of A Framework., Krithika S. Venkataraman Jan 1997

Role Of Patient Empowerment In Enhancing Medical Care Outcomes: Development And Validation Of A Framework., Krithika S. Venkataraman

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The overall goal of the study was to assess the characteristics of empowered type II diabetes patients and delineate an operational definition of empowerment. In addition, the study explored the role of empowerment on diabetes self-management, quality of life, and selected health resource utilization of these patients. The study was conducted in two phases. In Phase I, "empowerment" was operationalized into two domains: "first stage" and "second stage." Additionally, it was found that these two domains had three subdomains each. The "first stage" of empowerment subdomains were: (i) instrumental beliefs, (ii) outcome expectancy, and (iii) perceived self-efficacy; while the "second …

The Relationship Between Adult Attachment And Reactions To Familial Conflict., Edie Jo Hall Jan 1997

The Relationship Between Adult Attachment And Reactions To Familial Conflict., Edie Jo Hall

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

This study examined the relationship between mother-daughter attachment relationships and their reactions to conflict and other emotional exchanges. Fifteen young adults ("young generation" daughters), thirty middle-aged adults (15 "middle generation" mothers and 15 "middle generation" daughters), and fifteen older adults ("older generation" mothers) were assessed for the quality of their attachment to each other as well as their attachment to a romantic partner. Participants viewed a videotape in which a female actor, representing the participating family member, engaged in various emotional discussions (positive, neutral & negative). Participants were asked to imagine that the attachment figure was speaking directly towards her. …

The Effects Of A Parental Life-Threatening Illness On Children's Adjustment., Christa M. Holland Jan 1997

The Effects Of A Parental Life-Threatening Illness On Children's Adjustment., Christa M. Holland

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Mental health professionals are increasingly examining psychosocial issues of individuals with medical illnesses. Research has demonstrated that when the medical patient is a parent, the entire family experiences the crisis and impact of the diagnosis and treatment. Despite these findings, few studies have examined the impact of a parental life-threatening illness on children. The psychological and behavioral adjustment of children with a parent receiving a bone marrow transplant (BMT) was compared to that of children in a matched community group. Forty child-parent dyads (20 BMT and 20 Community) completed three self-report measures at pre and post-BMT to assess children's behavior, …

A Practical Implementation Of High-Speed Communication Using Digital Subscriber Line Technology, Todd Engle Jan 1997

A Practical Implementation Of High-Speed Communication Using Digital Subscriber Line Technology, Todd Engle

Theses

This thesis creates a plan for the practical implementation of high-speed communication for residences and businesses. By implementing low-cost, high-speed communication on a global scale, tremendous benefits can occur in areas such as Internet communication, interactive multimedia, telecommuting, and distance learning. Despite several successful trials of various high-speed communication technologies, many barriers remain before deployment can occur to the general public. This thesis proposes a plan to bridge the gap between theoretical test studies and global implementation. This thesis evaluates three communication systems as potential solutions for high-speed communication and selects one system as the solution. The three candidate systems …

Teamwork In Genetic Programming, Michael Lalena Jan 1997

Teamwork In Genetic Programming, Michael Lalena

Theses

This thesis attempts to solve food collection problems using genetic programming. The genetic program will evolve programs that mimic the way ants can collect food and bring it back to a nest. There are two special factors in this genetic program that make the ants work together in order to solve the problem, as opposed to each ant acting on its own. First, there will be a stream in the environment that the ants must cross to get to the food. Although all ants have the same program, some must move into the water and die, building a bridge for …

The Justification Of A Packaging Line Based On Capacity Issues, Chin Ho Jan 1997

The Justification Of A Packaging Line Based On Capacity Issues, Chin Ho

Theses

Due to the phenomenal increase in the long range marketing forecast for the products manufactured at the Garden City site of DuPont Merck Pharmaceuticals, a capacity problem was identified. This paper evaluates the impact of the increased forecast and demands on the packaging operations, and also the justification of a packaging line to support the expected capacity overload. It addresses different alternatives available to the company to support the demand and evaluate these options based on cash flow analysis. In addition, the study allows the general reader outside the company to understand the methodology involved in the justification of a …

A Study Of Package Drops In Global Distribution Environment, Donald Appleton Jan 1997

A Study Of Package Drops In Global Distribution Environment, Donald Appleton

Theses

The focus of this study was to compile and interpret drop heights and drop frequencies data for small parcel packages moving through the Eastman Kodak Company global distribution network. The need for this study arose from the inclusion of drop height probability curves into Kodak's shipping tests for packaged product weighing less than 100 lb. Kodak packaging engineers suspected the drop heights included in the probability curves were too high in drop height and too many in frequency when compared to the actual distribution environment. The data for this study resulted from dozens of test shipments using dummy-load packages throughout …

Psychometric Properties Of A Weeping Propensity Scale., Phyllis M. Olson Jan 1997

Psychometric Properties Of A Weeping Propensity Scale., Phyllis M. Olson

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The Weeping Propensity Scale is a 24-item questionnaire using a nine point Likert-type scale to query the intensity of a subject's weeping response to a variety of potentially crying-inducing situations. Results indicated that the measure has substantial reliability, both internal consistency (Cronbach alpha= .95) and test-retest reliability (r = .90). The study examined the stability of the factor structure of a revision of the Weeping Propensity Scale (WPS) and examined expected relationships with gender, instrumentality/expressiveness measured by the Personal Attributes Questionnaire (Spence, Helmreich, & Stapp, 1974),empathy measured by the Questionnaire Measure of Emotional Empathy (Mehrabian & Epstein, 1972), and the …

Police Discretion And The Quality Of Life In Public Places: Courts, Communities, And The New Policing, Debra A. Livingston Jan 1997

Police Discretion And The Quality Of Life In Public Places: Courts, Communities, And The New Policing, Debra A. Livingston

Faculty Scholarship

The advent of community and problem-oriented policing – the so-called "quality-of-life" policing philosophies – raises complex questions concerning police discretion in addressing minor street misconduct and judicial response to that discretion. In this Article, Debra Livingston addresses these questions by reassessing the ways in which courts have employed the facial vagueness doctrine to limit police discretion in the performance of "order maintenance" tasks. Livingston contends that aggressive employment of the facial vagueness doctrine is an inadequate mechanism for limiting police discretion and at the same time could impair positive change in the direction of community and problem-oriented policing. As an …

The Invisible Barbecue, Eben Moglen Jan 1997

The Invisible Barbecue, Eben Moglen

Faculty Scholarship

Past legislation subsidizing the development of infrastructural technology has borne the mark of political corruption. The subject matter of the Telecommunications Act of 1996 falls within the same category of legislation that has fallen prey to this process in the past. In an effort to discern whether such forces are at work today, Professor Moglen undertakes a critical examination of the metaphors that pervade the current scholarly discourse on the subject of telecommunications law. Terms such as "Superhighway," "Broadcasting," and "Market for Eyeballs" reveal a great deal about the implicit assumptions at work behind the current scholarship and legislation, and …

Campaign Finance, The Parties And The Court: A Comment On Colorado Republican Federal Campaign Committee V. Federal Elections Commission, Richard Briffault Jan 1997

Campaign Finance, The Parties And The Court: A Comment On Colorado Republican Federal Campaign Committee V. Federal Elections Commission, Richard Briffault

Faculty Scholarship

Last term, In Colorado Republican Federal Campaign Committee v. Federal Election Commission, the Supreme Court considered a direct attack on the constitutionality of the Federal Election Campaign Act's ("FECA") limits on political party expenditures. Colorado Republican was the Court's first campaign finance case in six years and the first in which the four Justices appointed by Presidents Bush and Clinton had an opportunity to participate. Colorado Republican was also the first case in the twenty-year regime of Buckley v. Valeo concerned with the constitutionality of restrictions on parties. Coming at a time of rising public concern, increased legislative activity, …

The Folklore Of Investor Capitalism, John C. Coffee Jr. Jan 1997

The Folklore Of Investor Capitalism, John C. Coffee Jr.

Faculty Scholarship

Ideally, Thurman Arnold should review this book. In his The Folklore of American Capitalism, Arnold dissected the ideology and rationalizations by which the business community of an earlier day defended its legitimacy and perquisites. Michael Useem, a sociologist at the Wharton School, also has an interest in the ideology of the business community: how corporate managers view the new institutional investors, how they justify resistance, and the tensions and inconsistencies between their critiques of money managers and their own behavior. This is an underutilized perspective (which law and economics inherently tends to overlook), and Useem is at his best …

Professionalism And The Corporate Culture Of Aviation Education, Charles (Chuck) R. Moren Jan 1997

Professionalism And The Corporate Culture Of Aviation Education, Charles (Chuck) R. Moren

Journal of Aviation/Aerospace Education & Research

Those of us who are in some way affiliated with a university-based professional-pilot preparation program boast about our ability to prepare our graduates for careers as professional pilots employed by major air carriers. Some of us even talk about subjects such as crew resource management and imply that the corporate culture at any air carrier can have a significant effect on the safety and efficiency of flight operations. If this is true, then we must recognize that the corporate culture of our educational institutions has a significant effect on the professional preparation of our graduates.

Student And Instructor Perceptions Of Effective Instructional Methods In A University Aviation Human Factors Course, Lorelie E. Miller, Jose R. Ruiz, Susan E. Sharp Jan 1997

Student And Instructor Perceptions Of Effective Instructional Methods In A University Aviation Human Factors Course, Lorelie E. Miller, Jose R. Ruiz, Susan E. Sharp

Journal of Aviation/Aerospace Education & Research

Aviation human factors instructors employed by University Aviation Association (UAA) member institutions and aviation flight students from Southern Illinois University at Carbondale (SIUC) were asked to rank nine teaching methods according to perceived effectiveness in each of four subject areas: flight physiology, flight psychology, aeronautical decision-making (ADM), and crew resource management (CRM). Responses were compiled into two categories, students and instructors. Analysis using the Spearman's rank correlation coefficient indicated that students and instructors generally agreed on teaching methods they considered appropriate to the four subject areas.

Magnetic Field Decay In Single Radio Pulsars: A Statistical Study, Soma Mukherjee, Ajit Kembhavi Jan 1997

Magnetic Field Decay In Single Radio Pulsars: A Statistical Study, Soma Mukherjee, Ajit Kembhavi

Physics & Astronomy Faculty Publications

We report on an extensive statistical study of single radio pulsar properties, which we undertook to estimate the decay timescale of pulsar magnetic fields. We synthesized a population of pulsars using assumed theoretical distributions of age, initial magnetic field, period of rotation, position, luminosity, and dispersion measure, taking into account the new distance model for pulsars as well as new velocity estimates. We also took into account the selection effects that characterize pulsar observations. We compared the simulated population with the observed single pulsar population using one- and two-dimensional Kolmogorov-Smirnov tests to obtain a lower bound of ∼160 Myr on …

Large-amplitude solitary waves in dusty plasma are investigated, taking into account the dusty particle temperature. It is shown that finite dusty temperature restricts the region for the existence of solitary waves.

Employees, Pensions, And The New Economic Order, Jeffrey N. Gordon Jan 1997

Employees, Pensions, And The New Economic Order, Jeffrey N. Gordon

Faculty Scholarship

The "New Economic Order" in the United States is a regime of trade liberalization, a robust market in corporate control, and labor market flexibility. Among the consequences over the 1980-1995 period is a divergence between the growth rate of corporate profits and stocks prices, which have increased by approximately 250% in real terms, and wages, which have barely increased at all, except for the top quintile. Contrary to popular belief employees have not significantly participated through their pension funds in this stock market appreciation. In the historically dominant defined benefit pension plan, the sponsoringfirm, not the employee, is the residual …

Old Chief V. United States: Stipulating Away Prosecutorial Accountability?, Daniel Richman Jan 1997

Old Chief V. United States: Stipulating Away Prosecutorial Accountability?, Daniel Richman

Faculty Scholarship

Earlier this year, in Old Chief v. United States, the Supreme Court finally resolved a circuit split on a nagging evidentiary issue: When a defendant charged with being a convicted felon in possession of a firearm offers to satisfy one of the statute's elements by stipulating to the existence of a prior felony conviction, may the government decline the stipulation and prove the existence and the nature of that prior felony?

The question of evidence law resolved in Old Chief is not particularly earth-shattering. Indeed, while the Court divided five to four on the issue, neither Justice Souter's opinion …

Deregulatory Takings, Breach Of The Regulatory Contract, And The Telecommunications Act Of 1996, William J. Baumol, Thomas W. Merrill Jan 1997

Deregulatory Takings, Breach Of The Regulatory Contract, And The Telecommunications Act Of 1996, William J. Baumol, Thomas W. Merrill

Faculty Scholarship

Professors Baumol and Merrill reply to Deregulatory Takings and Breach of the Regulatory Contract, published last year in this Review, which argued that the price incumbents may charge potential competitors for bottleneck facilities under the Telecommunications Act of 1996 should be based not on forward-looking costs but on historical costs. Professors Baumol and Merrill contend that pricing with reference to historical costs would depart from the principles called for by economic analysis for efficient pricing and they further argue that neither the Takings Clause nor the regulatory contract precludes the use of forward-looking costs in setting prices. If a taking …

The Bylaw Battlefield: Can Institutions Change The Outcome Of Corporate Control Contests?, John C. Coffee Jr. Jan 1997

The Bylaw Battlefield: Can Institutions Change The Outcome Of Corporate Control Contests?, John C. Coffee Jr.

Faculty Scholarship

What, if anything, can institutional investors do to influence the course and outcome of corporate control contests? The traditional answer was relatively little. To be sure, institutions could tender their shares in a tender offer or vote in a proxy contest to oust the incumbent board, but such a role was essentially reactive and contingent. It required that an offer actually be made before institutions could respond on an after-the-fact basis. Similarly, institutions have occasionally conducted precatory proxy campaigns calling upon the board to redeem its poison pill, but management was free to ignore these requests (and has done so).

Effects Of Pc-Based Pretraining On Pilots’ Performance In An Approved Flight-Training Device, Willem J. Homan, Kathleen D. Williams Jan 1997

Effects Of Pc-Based Pretraining On Pilots’ Performance In An Approved Flight-Training Device, Willem J. Homan, Kathleen D. Williams

Journal of Aviation/Aerospace Education & Research

PC-based multimedia learning tools are rapidly approaching a level of refinement that will allow them to become a viable and inexpensive option to the more traditional simulator training vital for instrument pilot certification. The purpose of this research was to investigate whether pretraining through the use of an inexpensive multimedia computer program, the ELITE, will lead to effective pilot performance compared with pretraining that is limited to an FAA-approved flight-training device. A standard instrument flight maneuver, the Distance Measuring Equipment Arc (DME ARC), was chosen for this experimental study. Scores on criterion-referenced tests were used to evaluate cognitive pilot performance. …

Medical Problems In Commercial Flight: Shortage Of Airport Medical Facilities, Norma Dowsett Jan 1997

Medical Problems In Commercial Flight: Shortage Of Airport Medical Facilities, Norma Dowsett

Journal of Aviation/Aerospace Education & Research

Heart disease remains the leading cause of death in the United States. If the heart-attack victim is unfortunate enough to be at an airport, the prognosis for survival is exceedingly low, unless vigorous treatment begins immediately. Currently, there are only four fully staffed medical facilities operating at U.S. airport terminals, a fact that should be unacceptable. With the increase in air travel, cases of medical emergencies at the terminals and on board aircraft will inevitably increase. The rise in contagious diseases also could hamper the efficiency of aircraft flight. To save lives, to increase the expediency of emergency quarantine procedures, …
