Hope And Despair For A New South Africa: The Limits Of Rights Discourse, Makau Wa Mutua Jan 1997

Hope And Despair For A New South Africa: The Limits Of Rights Discourse, Makau Wa Mutua

Journal Articles

This article is a critique of the struggle to end apartheid in South Africa. It explores the assumptions employed by the African National Congress and the international community to construct a post-apartheid society. It argues that the reliance on the law as the key medium for economic, social, and political change was insufficient to transform the legacy of apartheid. Instead, the piece contends that apartheid was privatized and its beneficiaries protected under the new dispensation. It makes the argument that the lot of the black majority is unlikely to be changed such gradualist approach to social change.

Distribution Of Quahog Larvae Along A North-South Transect In Narragansett Bay, Nurlisa A. Butet

Open Access Master's Theses

A study on the distribution of quahog (Mercenaria mercenaria (Linnaeus 1758)) larvae in Narragansett Bay, Rhode Island was conducted during a single summer season in 1995. Samples of the larvae were collected weekly using an electric bilge pump and a 60 um mesh plankton net at two depths (0.3 m and 1.6m) at five sampling stations distributed landward along the West shore, 12.6 kmto 30.6 km from Rhode Island Sound. Three stations were located in the upper estuary, i.e., Upper Bay, and two stations were in the lower estuary, i.e., UpperWest Passage.

The temporal distribution of quahog larvae was …

Waves Of Change: Women, Work, War, And Wedlock In Colonial Newport, Rhode Island, 1750-1775, Jonathan M. Beagle Jan 1997

Waves Of Change: Women, Work, War, And Wedlock In Colonial Newport, Rhode Island, 1750-1775, Jonathan M. Beagle

Open Access Master's Theses

The intent of this thesis is to explore connections between gender relations and the construction of a local discourse by which residents of late colonial Newport, Rhode Island, interpreted the coming American Revolution. Historians in recent years have documented a relationship between gender and the rhetoric of the Revolution and separately have linked the development of commercial economies to a desire for independence in the colonies. However, relatively unexplored are the possible connections between the nature of gender relations within the emergent economies and the appeal for independence.

The emergence of an urban economy in Newport dominated by commerce and …

An Effective Writing Program That Meets The Needs Of Lower Elementary Students, Marita R. Schroeder

Graduate Research Papers

The purpose of this project was to examine current research on the writing process, to identify major elements of an effective writing program, and then implement a writing program for young children which encompasses the major elements. The elements of the writing program implemented within the classroom were: modeling (by the teacher, children and authors), daily writing, conferencing (mini-lessons), publishing, and special projects. It was found that a carefully structured writing program enhances the writing of students in the classroom. The process approach to writing values the students as well as the writing process. This approach is an ideal way …

Photographs To Enhance The Exhibits In Writing Portfolios, Carol R. Winterboer Jan 1997

Photographs To Enhance The Exhibits In Writing Portfolios, Carol R. Winterboer

Graduate Research Papers

Writing portfolios in a third grade classroom were used to more closely relate assessment to students' instructional needs. Photographs of students' involvement in experiences across the curriculum were offered for students to use with their writing. The photographs served to enhance the students' pieces of writing or were used in place of an artifact that was impractical to include in a portfolio. Writing samples related to two thematic units, one in science and the other in social studies, are discussed. Descriptions of the children's writing experiences, photographs that accompany student selected pieces, and students' self-reflections are presented. This portfolio experience …

Strategies For Sprinkling Spice On An Elementary Physical Education Program: Thematic Instruction Comes To The Gym!, Kristine Lee Whitcher

Graduate Research Papers

The purpose of this project was to identify curriculum design strategies that would assist elementary physical education teachers in producing thematic units for elementary physical education classes. Strategies for integrating curriculum were identified in the literature then used to create and implement a thematic physical education project. Specific strategies were explained in detail through examples associated with the project. The strategies demonstrate that thematic instruction can successfully meet the needs of many children, invite new learning, and will assist teachers in coordinating themes with elementary physical education classes. A school-wide Olympic Fest was the culminating event of this project. There …

A Descriptive Analysis Of The Search Features Of General Electronic Encyclopedias, Barb Ehlers

Graduate Research Papers

This research study is a descriptive analysis of the search features of general electronic encyclopedias in the CD-ROM format. This study describes the browse, analytical and hierarchical search features commonly found in seven electronic encyclopedias. The study found that browse search features are a linear index of titles or subjects, analytical search features offer simple and complex options while the software searches full text, and hierarchical search features offer subject breakdown from broad categories to specific articles. Common trends and variations are described through the use of text, screen shots and tables.

A Preferred Vision For Administering Elementary Schools : A Reflective Essay, Richard E. Wulf-Mcgrath

Graduate Research Papers

I embrace change. I think back to when I lived in Massachusetts with my parents during high school. I looked into colleges that I might want to attend. inquired into business colleges. ln the northeast region of the country there were plenty of them. But for some reason I applied to one school out west; The University of Denver. I did not know any friends in Denver. l did not have any relatives close-by. I wanted an adventure. I was accepted and I decided to attend. This decision changed my life.

The Effects Of Protection On The Patter Of Trade: A Disaggregated Analysis (A), Jon D. Haveman, U. C. Nair, Jerry Thursby Jan 1997

The Effects Of Protection On The Patter Of Trade: A Disaggregated Analysis (A), Jon D. Haveman, U. C. Nair, Jerry Thursby

Purdue CIBER Working Papers

We analyze the effects of protection using disaggregated data. This permits analysis of distinct effects of tariffs and NTBs on trade. Our analysis indicates that tariffs tend to shift trade towards larger exporters. We find significant trade diversion caused by tariffs. In the case of NTBs, we find quantitative barriers are more likely to raise prices than are price restrictions. Quantity barriers appear to lead exporters to concentrate on higher priced varieties. We do not find much evidence to suggest that countries not targeted by an NTB gain at the expense of targeted countries. We find that NTBs tend to …

Freedom Of Assembly And The Right To Passage In Modern English Legal History , Rachel Vorspan Jan 1997

Freedom Of Assembly And The Right To Passage In Modern English Legal History , Rachel Vorspan

Faculty Scholarship

This Article suggests, on the broadest level, that the history of the "right to passage" in the past two centuries is explicable only in terms of the complex interaction between formal legal doctrine on the one hand and social and political pressures on the other. Specific challenges to public order significantly shaped the evolution of legal rules, but these rules, once established, constrained official action and compelled the authorities at critical junctures to develop countervailing strategies. This exploration confirms that neither an externalist nor internalist approach to legal history by itself adequately explains historical change and, moreover, that the relative …

Absolute Tumor Perfusion Determined By Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Spectroscopy :, Nicholas Edward Simpson Jan 1997

Absolute Tumor Perfusion Determined By Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Spectroscopy :, Nicholas Edward Simpson

Wayne State University Dissertations

The ultimate goal of this dissertation is to describe the optimization and implementation of an NMR indicator uptake technique which can non-invasively and repeatedly measure tissue perfusion. Chapter II concerns itself with the method optimization of the NMR approaches to measuring tissue perfusion. Since the primary goal of this dissertation research is to obtain absolute perfusion measures, and the AIF is required for this, Chapter II discusses the development of the apparatus and NMR method with which one can extract an apparent AIF from individual rats - a method which will not necessarily result in the animal's immediate death. As …

Development Of Spiral Ganglion Cells In Syrian Golden Hamster, Lollita Devi Panchoosingh Jan 1997

Development Of Spiral Ganglion Cells In Syrian Golden Hamster, Lollita Devi Panchoosingh

Wayne State University Dissertations

An understanding of auditory development requires description of anatomical events underlying the onset and maturation of function. Relatively little is known about the anatomical events responsible for subsequent maturation of auditory sensitivity. The present project will attempt to fill this gap by focusing on ultrastructural changes in the type I spiral ganglion cells (SGC) of the cochlea during the period of functional maturation using the Syrian golden hamster (LVG strain). Cochleas were taken from 6 day old to 30 day old animals in two day intervals, inclusively. Mature 36 day old hamsters were studied for comparison. The cochlear tissue was …
