Have A Safe Trip: An Investigation Of Rituals And Sanctions Surrounding Lsd Use, David Wellbourne-Wood Jan 1997

Have A Safe Trip: An Investigation Of Rituals And Sanctions Surrounding Lsd Use, David Wellbourne-Wood

Theses : Honours

There is little recent literature which identifies social controls operating among illicit drug users in Perth, Western Australia. This hinders understanding of the local illicit drug scene and makes the formulation of appropriate harm reduction strategies difficult. This study is a qualitative investigation of rituals and social sanctions which surround the use of Lysergic Acid Diethylamide (LSD). The research describes these rituals and sanctions, and examines their various functions for eight experienced users. The research adopted elements of a phenomenological approach, using in-depth semi-structured interviews to elicit a description of users' subjective experiences with LSD, and Colaizzi's (1978) phenomenological analysis …

Scope Of Justice, Delegitimisation, Sentience And Ecosystemic Integrity As Predictors Of Protection, Rob Gulley Jan 1997

Scope Of Justice, Delegitimisation, Sentience And Ecosystemic Integrity As Predictors Of Protection, Rob Gulley

Theses : Honours

It is argued that the continuing environmental destruction results from an instrumental valuation of the non-human world. Fox's (1995) alternative intrinsic value approach to environmental protection is introduced. Two aspects of Fox's descriptive model may represent fundamental motives, or ethical bases, for behaviour. They are sentience -the quality of being capable of experiencing pain, and ecosystemic-integrity -the quality of contributing to the self-regenerating capacity of an ecosystem. The inconsistency between the presumed ethical bases for behaviour, and actual behaviour is noted. It is suggested that delegitimisation- the discounting of some desirable quality in a competitor during conflict, and the scope …

Defeating Environmental Law: The Geology Of Legal Advantage, William H. Rodgers, Jr.

Articles

My talk today will: (1) introduce the metaphor of geology, (2) suggest to you that complexity has "gainers" as well as "losers," and (3) show you how environmental laws can be defeated by these twin engines of complexity and clever human adversaries.

Corporate Communication With The Intranet, Carol J. Sonderman Jan 1997

Corporate Communication With The Intranet, Carol J. Sonderman

Theses

This project will focus on the study of the intranet through a review of literature and interviews to determine its value as a corporate communication tool. Currently, the intranet is in the early "innovator and adaptor" stage of development. However, it is moving rapidly forward to the early maturity stage within the corporate world.

Intranets can connect every person, every document, and every application within an organization, no matter where they are physically located. Intranets help companies reduce their paper costs in core areas of communication such as company telephone directories, employee benefits handbooks, manuals, and interoffice or department newsletters. …

Diagnosis Of Livestock Production In Three Communities (La Inmaculada, Tunshi San Miguel, And Ela Guano) Using The Chambo Irrigation System - Guano, Egresado José Orozco Cruz

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this research was to implement a stratifying sampling system in the communities of La Inmaculada, Tunshi San Miguel, and Ela Guano, part of the Chambo-Guano irrigation system. The domesticated animal population in these communities consisted of cattle, sheep, swine, guinea pigs, and poultry. The animal feed used in these communities included alfalfa, grass, corn stalks, banana, weeds, kitchen residue, hulk, hard and soft corn, barley, wheat and other feed preparations. In general, animal management in these communities is technically deficient and most animals exhibited diseases that are controllable by veterinarians. Study recommendations to improve conditions for rural …

Department of Entomology: Faculty Publications

Polymerase chain reaction-restriction fragment length polymorphism (PCR-RFLP) and sequencing analyses were used to characterize an amplicon of ~625 bp in 4 of the 5 nominate species of Muscidifurax Girault & Sanders, pupal parasitoids of muscoid flies. A single polymorphic nucleotide site was observed among 2 samples of M. raptor Girault & Sanders. No sequence variation was observed among 3 samples of M. raptorellus Kogan & Legner. The sequence of M. uniraptor Kogan & Legner was identical to that of M. raptorellus. Nucleotide divergence among the Muscidifurax spp. ranged from 0.14 to 0.18 substitutions per nucleotide. Muscidifurax zaraptor Kogan & …

Disparate Effects In The Criminal Justice System: A Response To Randall Kennedy's Comment And Its Legacy, Janai S. Nelson

Faculty Publications

For many African Americans, the criminal justice system symbolizes an oppressive force, and yet, is a necessary institution in an increasingly lawless society. African Americans are at the same time its victims and beneficiaries, although various sentiments exist regarding the extent to which they are either. It is precisely this paradox, coupled with the promulgation of certain criminal legislation and legal precedent which directly and, potentially, adversely affect the African-American community that inspired the author to address the issues and arguments raised in Randall Kennedy's The State, Criminal Law, and Racial Discrimination: A Comment, 107 Harv. L. Rev. 1255 (1994), …

Democracy's Discontent In A Complex World: Can Avalanches, Sandpiles, And Finches Optimize Michael Sandel's Civic Republican Community?, Hope M. Babcock

Georgetown Law Faculty Publications and Other Works

In Democracy's Discontent: America in Search of a Public Philosophy, Michael Sandel looks about him and finds a vast and complex world governed by impersonal institutions and structures, in which discontented, anxious, and frustrated individuals are losing control over the forces that govern their lives, and in which the moral fabric of community is unraveling. His solution is to revitalize the civic strand of freedom found in republican politics and thus equip individuals to govern themselves. Sandel wonders how civic republicanism can exist in today's world. Historically, republicanism has found a home in small, bounded places, which were largely …

Sexual Character Evidence In Civil Actions: Refining The Propensity Rule, Jane H. Aiken Jan 1997

Sexual Character Evidence In Civil Actions: Refining The Propensity Rule, Jane H. Aiken

Georgetown Law Faculty Publications and Other Works

When claims of sexual misconduct are made, two threads are often seen in the kinds of questions raised: Did she "invite it," and has he ever done it before? The way these questions are handled can determine the outcome of a sexual misconduct case. In 1995, Congress weighed in on whether these questions could be asked in civil cases in federal court and adopted two significant changes to the rules of evidence. One, revised Rule 412,4 extends "rape shield" protection to civil actions that claim sexual misconduct, including sexual harassment. The other, new Rule 415,5 allows plaintiffs to offer evidence …

Pandora’S Box: Managerial Discretion And The Problem Of Corporate Philanthropy, Faith Stevelman Jan 1997

Pandora’S Box: Managerial Discretion And The Problem Of Corporate Philanthropy, Faith Stevelman

Articles & Chapters

Corporate giving to 501(c)(3) nonprofits (“charities”) is a more curious, varied and interesting phenomenon than commentators have recognized. Such “gifts” can be grouped generally into four categories. First, Giving to executives’ preferred charities represents an alternative form of compensation. Second, corporate philanthropy is often tied to the company’s commercial advertising, as a method of promoting consumer goodwill and sales. Thirdly, some corporate gifts may be motivated by their leaders’ desire to “give back” to the community, as an expression of corporate social responsibility. Finally, corporations may use contributions to politically enabled nonprofits, including think tanks and market-oriented/ “public interest” litigation …

Vitamin A Content In Preparations Of Plant Foods With The Highest Consumption In The Beneficiary Communities Of The Benson Institute, Ana Luisa Méndez Hernández

Theses and Dissertations

One of the main nutrient deficiencies in Guatemala is vitamin A, mainly in pregnant women and children under the age of five. The consumption of plant material can improve vitamin A ingestion levels. It is necessary to research consumption frequency and preparation methods of the most commonly available plant materials, as well as the vitamin A content of these plant materials. This research took place in San Juan Ermita, Chiquimula in the communities of Chancó, Corral de Piedra, and Salitrón. The results demonstrated that the most commonly consumed plant material preparations were mulberry soup, chatate soup, toasted maize soup, chipilin …

A Mormon Cultural Study Of Musical Preference, Alden L. Weight Jan 1997

A Mormon Cultural Study Of Musical Preference, Alden L. Weight

Theses and Dissertations

Music is an important yet relatively unnoticed part of the everyday world almost all of us take for granted. Whether in the car, watching television, shopping, at work or at home, even waking up in the morning or going to sleep at night, and so forth, music surrounds us, soothes us, disturbs us, and occasionally goes so far as to persuade us. Although music plays a significant role in many areas of life, its relationship to society is especially evident in the religious sphere. Therefore, the religious sphere is an ideal place to examine what music does and what it …

Hope And Despair For A New South Africa: The Limits Of Rights Discourse, Makau Wa Mutua Jan 1997

Hope And Despair For A New South Africa: The Limits Of Rights Discourse, Makau Wa Mutua

Journal Articles

This article is a critique of the struggle to end apartheid in South Africa. It explores the assumptions employed by the African National Congress and the international community to construct a post-apartheid society. It argues that the reliance on the law as the key medium for economic, social, and political change was insufficient to transform the legacy of apartheid. Instead, the piece contends that apartheid was privatized and its beneficiaries protected under the new dispensation. It makes the argument that the lot of the black majority is unlikely to be changed such gradualist approach to social change.
