Laura Jensen, Dina Ben-Lev Jan 1997

Laura Jensen, Dina Ben-Lev

Western Writers Series Digital Editions

Poet and critic Tess Gallagher has described Laura Jensen as “the Einstein of the ordinary.” Just as Einstein's theories disrupted the then common-sense understanding of a universe governed by immutable laws, Jensen’s poems transform our view of the everyday things we take for granted, the ordinary birds and flowers we no longer notice. “Behind a poem is a bad intention / to make the reader worry deeply,” Jensen writes in “What Is Poetry?”, a poem from her first chapbook (After 16). Her poems “worry” us because they force us to confront our fear of the unpredictability of the world. …

Constraints On Frugivory By Bears, Christy A. Welch, Jeffrey Keay, Katherine C. Kendall, Charles T. Robbins Jan 1997

Constraints On Frugivory By Bears, Christy A. Welch, Jeffrey Keay, Katherine C. Kendall, Charles T. Robbins

United States National Park Service: Publications

Bears consuming wild fruits for fall energy accumulation are constrained by several factors, including intake rate, the physiological capacity of the gastrointestinal tract, and the metabolic efficiency of gain in body mass. We measured these relationships through foraging and feeding trials using captive and wild black bears (Ursus americanus) and grizzly bears (Ursus arctos). Four fruit types covering a range of sizes and clustering were offered to captive bears to determine the effect of density, size, and presentation on intake rate. Intake rate (in grams per minute) and bite rates (in bites per minute) increased curvilinearly …

Taking A Byte Out Of The Senate: Reconsidering The Research Use Of Correspondence And Casework Files, Naomi L. Nelson Jan 1997

Taking A Byte Out Of The Senate: Reconsidering The Research Use Of Correspondence And Casework Files, Naomi L. Nelson

Provenance, Journal of the Society of Georgia Archivists

In the mid-1970s, a sustained discussion about the management of modem congressional collections first emerged in archival literature. Much of the debate over congressional collections during the intervening twenty years concerned the appropriate disposition of the voluminous constituent correspondence and casework files. Most archivists agreed that the casework and constituent correspondence records created and filed under the old paper-based system were bulky, hard to use, and of little research value.

Nutrition And The Early-Medieval Diet, Kathy L. Pearson Jan 1997

Nutrition And The Early-Medieval Diet, Kathy L. Pearson

History Faculty Publications

The food supply of the temperate lands of early-medieval western Europe, and the ways in which its peoples dealt with the central problem of feeding themselves, has been subjected to a variety of interpretations in recent years. Vern Bullough and Cameron Campbell's study of the medieval diet and female longevity concluded that early-medieval women suffered from iron deficiencies triggered jointly by poor nutrition and frequent childbearing and that these deficiencies contributed substantially to their average early age of death. Ann Hagen's overview of Anglo-Saxon patterns of food production and consumption suggested that most of the early English population routinely lived …

Walking Thoughts, Hunter R. Rawlings Iii Jan 1997

Walking Thoughts, Hunter R. Rawlings Iii

Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS

I've borrowed my title from a poem by Marvin Bell, a member of our Writers' Workshop, because I cannot think of state parks without thinking of my love for their hiking trails and the expansion of spirit they have brought me. State parks are more than nature preserves, more than recreational areas, though these functions are very important. They are also cultural and even spiritual resources, centers of emotional and psychic renewal.
