The NebGuide details recommendations for a beef cattle herd immunization program.
This NebGuide presents two flow sheets which detail the recommendations for a beef cattle herd immunization program: the Calf through Weaning Preventive Health Management Flow Sheet and the Heifers, Cows and Bulls Preventive Health Management Flow Sheet. While this NebGuide emphasizes the procedures conducted on cattle at each cattle handling opportunity, it is very important to note the role a high quality nutritional program plays in building a total herd health program. You are encouraged to work with a qualified beef cattle nutritionist and your veterinarian when developing your …

Oviposition Pheromone In The Simulium Damnosum Complex: Biological Activity Of Chemical Fractions From Gravid Ovaries, P. J. Mccall, R. R. Heath, B. D. Dueben, M. D. Wilson
Entomology Papers from Other Sources
Communal oviposition in the Afrotropical blackfly species complex Simulium damnosum Theobald (Diptera: Simuliidae) is mediated by a pheromone emitted by freshly laid eggs. Previously, two compounds (designated peaks A and B) emanating from fresh eggs were shown to be associated with attractiveness to gravid blackflies in bioassay. The present study investigated the role of these compounds by testing the responses of wild-caught Simulium yahense in Ghana to fractionated hexane extracts of gravid ovaries prepared by gas chromatography (GC). Although the fractions were prepared from Sierra Leonean Simulium teonense, GC analysis of the emissions from fresh S. yahense eggs showed …
Sex Online: Is This Adultery, Christina Tavella Hall
Sex Online: Is This Adultery, Christina Tavella Hall
UC Law SF Communications and Entertainment Journal
Should online infidelity be included as grounds for divorce in modern adultery statutes? This Note explores the history of divorce law and evaluates the possibilities of alleging online adultery as a sustainable reason for divorce. The author concludes that, in light of the normative goals of divorce law, the courts are an improper venue for addressing online affairs. Thus, online affairs, though possibly detrimental to marriage, are not "adultery" for legal purposes and therefore should not constitute adequate grounds for divorce in fault-based divorce proceedings.

Reflections On A Gossamer Thread In The World Wide Web: Claims For Protection Of The Droit Moral Right Of Integrity In Digitally Distributed Works Of Authorship, Timothy E. Nielander
UC Law SF Communications and Entertainment Journal
The global distribution of digitized materials through the Internet creates new challenges for traditional copyright law. Protection for moral rights continues to be a subject of international contention because of the global and interactive nature of cyberspace. Moral rights contemplate highly personal control over creative expression even after the artist has obtained the economic benefit provided by copyright laws throughout the globe. This Article argues that policies predicated on the free flow of information and of creative works in international trade may diminish the capacity of artists to claim violations of a right of integrity in digitized reproductions of their …
West Virginia Corporate Law: Is It "Broke"?, Debra R. Cohen
West Virginia Corporate Law: Is It "Broke"?, Debra R. Cohen
Journal Articles
We are all familiar with the cliche "if it ain't broke, don't fix it." The sentiment is as applicable to law as it is to the rest of life. When a law does what it is intended to do, legislators and courts should leave it alone. However, when a law no longer serves its intended purpose, it is "broke," and should be revised. The question is whether West Virginia's corporate law is "broke." In 1974, the West Virginia Legislature adopted the West Virginia Corporation Act (the "Act").' The Act brought then modem standards of corporate law to West Virginia. Since …

Nature And The Divine: Classical Greek Philosophy And The Political In The Thought Of Leo Strauss And Eric Voegelin., Todd Eric Myers
Nature And The Divine: Classical Greek Philosophy And The Political In The Thought Of Leo Strauss And Eric Voegelin., Todd Eric Myers
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
The following work is an attempt to clarify the relationship of two of the most significant political thinkers of the later part of the twentieth century. Previous scholarship on the relationship between Leo Strauss and Eric Voegelin has focused on the two men's different interpretations of the religious traditions of Judaism and Christianity. In this work, we explore the two men's presentations of classical Greek philosophy to illuminate how their differing readings of the classics come to similar conclusions regarding the nature and limits of the political. Our investigation probes how Strauss's treatment of philosophy as being slightly more comic …
Evaluation Of Water-Seeded No-Till Rice Culture With Respect To Weeds And Seedling Disease., Roland Detleo Mendt
Evaluation Of Water-Seeded No-Till Rice Culture With Respect To Weeds And Seedling Disease., Roland Detleo Mendt
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Field studies were conducted over three years to evaluate preplant postemergence herbicides for red rice control in rice under no-till water-seeded culture. Application of paraquat or sulfosate plus thiobencarb and paraquat alone 3 days before seeding (DBS) resulted in the greatest red rice control 11 weeks after seeding (WAS). Rice yield was increased and percent red rice in rice grain decreased when paraquat or sulfosate was applied in combination with thiobencarb compared with the nontreated control. Rice yield was increased when herbicides were applied 3 and 7 DBS as compared with 14 and 28 DBS. Aqueous extracts of cursed buttercup, …
Predictors Of Postconcussion Symptomatology In A Mild Head Injury College Population., Laurie M. Ryan
Predictors Of Postconcussion Symptomatology In A Mild Head Injury College Population., Laurie M. Ryan
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Mild head injury is the most common form of head injury and the majority of individuals who sustain such injuries are young adults. Following mild head injury, individuals often complain of a number of physical, cognitive, and behavioral symptoms referred to as postconcussion symptoms (PCS). The most commonly reported postconcussion symptoms are headache, dizziness, decreased concentration, memory problems, irritability, fatigue, visual disturbances, sensitivity to noise, judgement problems, and anxiety. These symptoms can persist from months to years following injury and may even be permanent and cause disability (Brown, Fann, & Grant, 1994; Gouvier, Cubic, Jones, Brantley, and Cutlip, 1992). Both …
Relationship Of Self-Injurious Behavior And Aggression To Social Skills In Persons With Severe And Profound Mental Retardation., Dee Duncan
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
In the literature, self-injurious behavior and aggression are often lumped together collectively as maladaptive behaviors. This study examined the social skills characteristics between persons with self-injurious behavior, aggression and a control group using the Matson Evaluation of Social Skills in Persons with Severe and Profound Retardation (MESSIER). Persons engaging in self-injurious behavior were significantly different from persons engaging in aggression as well as from the control group on five of the six subscales. The self-injury group had lower scores on subscales measuring positive behaviors and higher scores on subscales measuring negative behaviors. As expected for persons engaging in aggression, scores …
Southern Families And Their Daughters: The Self And The System In Selected Texts By Grau, Gilchrist, Welty, Spencer, And Douglas., Jo K. Galle
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
In this interdisciplinary study, I apply the materials of family systems theory to the study of five twentieth-century literary texts, each written by a Southern white woman. Arranged in the order they will appear in this study, the five texts are The Keepers of the House (1964) by Shirley Ann Grau; Net of Jewels (1992) by Ellen Gilchrist; The Golden Apples (1949) by Eudora Welty; The Voice at the Back Door (1956) by Elizabeth Spencer; and Can't Quit You, Baby (1988) by Ellen Douglas. In the analysis of these books--all examples of domestic and social realism--I analyze and measure the …

A Case-Ready Modified-Atmosphere Packaging System For Beef., Brian Scott Smith
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Beef tenderness and color stability were evaluated in conventional and modified atmosphere packaging (MAP) systems. Equal portions of inside rounds removed immediately (PM0) or at 48 h postmortem (PM48) were vacuum packaged (VP) whole or cut into steaks and packaged in 80%N$\sb2$:20%CO$\sb2$ MAP. On day 12, MAP environments were exchanged for 80%O$\sb2$:20%CO$\sb2$. Calpastatin activity was lower at 2 d postmortem for PM48 steaks than PM0 steaks. Electrophoresis indicated more degradation of 50 and $>$250 kDA compounds at 2 d postmortem for PM48 than PM0 steaks. Steaks from PM48 required less shear force than PM0 steaks. Indicator Bacteria Concentrations Of Two Northwest Arkansas Streams In Relation To Flow And Season, Dwayne R. Edwards, Mark S. Coyne, Tommy C. Daniel, P. F. Vendrell, J. F. Murdoch, P. A. Moore Jr.
Biosystems and Agricultural Engineering Faculty Publications
Concentrations of indicator bacteria such as fecal coliform (FC) and fecal streptococcus (FS) are often used to assess the suitability of waters for their intended use(s) and to allocate resources for water quality improvement measures. There is evidence, however, that concentrations of FC and FS can be influenced by variables such as season and flow rate during sampling, which could lead to biased results. The objective of this study was to assess the impacts of season and flow rate on concentrations of FC and FS. Fecal indicator bacteria concentrations were measured for approximately three years at five sites on two …
Slamming Shut The Ark Doors: Congress's Attack On The Listing Process Of The Endangered Species Act, Jeffrey S. Kopf
Slamming Shut The Ark Doors: Congress's Attack On The Listing Process Of The Endangered Species Act, Jeffrey S. Kopf
Animal Law Review
The 104th Congress legislated a complete moratorium on the listing of species and critical habitat under the Endangered Species Act. Mr. Kopf explores the motivations behind the moratorium and shows how market forces may further weaken the ESA. This article questions whether the moratorium and its subsequent repeal signal a new era of environmental awareness or a return to industry's discreet manipulation of the legislative process.
Carnivorous Spadefoot (Spea Bombifrons Cope) Tadpoles And Fairy Shrimp In Western Iowa, Eugenia S. Farrar, Jane D. Hey
Carnivorous Spadefoot (Spea Bombifrons Cope) Tadpoles And Fairy Shrimp In Western Iowa, Eugenia S. Farrar, Jane D. Hey
Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS
Amphibian larval polymorphisms, rarely found in the Midwest, are more common in arid western regions. We have discovered that Plains spadefoot toad, Spea bombifrons Cope, tadpoles occur as carnivorous and omnivorous morphological forms in flooded soybean and corn fields on the Missouri River flood plain of western Iowa. Carnivores have longer snouts, larger beaks with an upper cusp and lower notch, shorter intestines with fewer loops than the omnivores, and they feed on fairy shrimp. A similar polymorphism in Spea multiplicata Cope enhances survival in the desert because the carnivore develops faster after consuming fairy shrimp and is able to …
Iowa's State Parks: A Various Language, Rebecca Conard
Iowa's State Parks: A Various Language, Rebecca Conard
Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS
Iowa's state park system is distinctive because academically based natural scientists were instrumental in drafting the 1917 State Park Law, in shaping the initial policies, and in establishing the first parks. The mandate of the 1917 law was broad, but its original intent was to preserve and conserve natural resources; providing recreational enjoyment was secondary. Between 1920 and mid-century the founding vision was recast time and again by compromises that sprang from economic necessity, competing interests, and changing societal values. The ideal of resource protection has remained a guiding principle, however, in large part because strong personalities provided continuity of …

Law And Order In Cyberspace: Washington Report, Nicholas W. Allard, David A. Kass
UC Law SF Communications and Entertainment Journal
Electronic commerce in cyberspace faces an uncertain legal environment. In many instances the laws that will shape the future growth and development of electronic commerce have yet to be written. Gaps in the regulatory framework, and rules from other contexts that are made obsolete by cyberspace technology, promote chaotic market conditions and impede innovation. Today, business activity or interaction with people which employs 19th and 20th Century communication technology is governed by an array of civil and criminal laws. It is, however, not at all clear which existing legal rules do or ought to apply to markets in cyberspace. From …

Global Precedence In Visual Search? Not So Fast: Evidence Instead For An Oblique Effect, Frank H. Durgin, Sarah E. Wolfe , '97
Psychology Faculty Works
The evidence from an earlier report of global precedence in visual search is reexamined, Two new experiments are reported. The results of the first experiment indicate that the confusability of oblique orientations (a class-2 oblique effect) rather than global precedence was responsible for the earlier results. The results of the second experiment show that the effect critically depends on the presence of heterogeneous distracters rather than on differences in raw processing speed for different spatial scales. The possible role of symmetry is discussed.

This Article examines McNamara's "confession" and the public response to it within the context of an American tradition of confession in law and literature. Part I traces that tradition to the criminal conversion narratives and gallows speeches of colonial New England. Puritan society had clear expectations of what it took to make a good confession, and the Article identifies these rules for confession. It also examines the functions of confession in that society and argues that these confessions had several social consequences, including easing the consciences of those implicated in the criminal's punishment; bolstering civil and religious authority; warning the …
