A Teacher's Personal Resource File, Valerie A. Sefton

Honors Capstones

Today, there are many different resources available to teachers. These range from books to audio/ visual materials, computer programs and the Internet. Knowing where to find materials and what materials are available provides teachers with an endless list of options. Thisresource unit contains listsof books, thematic units, web sites, activities, and other sources of teacher related materials. I collected these from past classes, clinical experiences, suggestions from other teachers, and the work of classmates. I interviewed teachers, looked through collections of teacher resources, and drew from past work. I then organized the material into 10 different sections for organizational purposes.

The Roasted And The Boiled: Food Composition And Heat Treatment With Special Emphasis On Pit-Hearth Cooking, Luann Wandsnider Jan 1997

The Roasted And The Boiled: Food Composition And Heat Treatment With Special Emphasis On Pit-Hearth Cooking, Luann Wandsnider

Department of Anthropology: Faculty Publications

Heat treatment is one of the major ways humans change the composition and chemistry of food tissues, making them more digestible, less toxic, and more durable. This paper reviews salient features of food chemistry and food composition and how heat treatment, especially pit-hearth cooking, affects that composition. Ethnographic accounts of cooking indicate that traditional populations relied on pit-hearth cooking especially to alter the composition of foods high in either lipids or complex carbohydrates. Historically, pit hearths were also used to process large quantities of food. Various kinds of pit hearths figure prominently in the archaeological deposits of the American Great …

Variability In Metabolic Rate, Feed Intake And Fatness Among Selection And Inbred Lines Of Mice, D. E. Moody, Daniel Pomp, Merlyn K. Nielsen Jan 1997

Variability In Metabolic Rate, Feed Intake And Fatness Among Selection And Inbred Lines Of Mice, D. E. Moody, Daniel Pomp, Merlyn K. Nielsen

Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications

Mouse populations differing in metabolic rate have been developed through selection for high (MH) and low (ML) heat loss (HLOSS), along with randomly selected controls (MC). Objectives of this study were to (a) compare MH, ML and MC lines for HLOSS and correlated traits of feed intake, body composition and organ weights; (b) compare three widely used inbred mouse lines with MH, ML and MC for the same traits ; and (c) investigate potential genotype by diet interaction resulting from feeding diets differing in fat percentage. Heat loss (kcal/day) of MH and ML mice differed by 37% of the mean …
